THE HALF-MADE WORLD by Felix Gilman
So far I am FAR more impressed by this than I ever thought I would be. Very addictive reading.

Powered through The Electric Church which was absolutely brilliant, and am now about one third of the way through The Passage, Justin Cronin - and once again, I am loving this book. Very different from my normal reads but I am trying to further broaden the old horizons. Read some fairly unkind reviews, imho, as the writing is top notch and very skillfully constructed, whilst the characters are complex, realistic and fascinating. Recommended.

Knocking off a few books already this holiday season. First, Dreams of Steel by Glen Cook, another solid Black Company novel, I wouldn't rank it as one of the best, I'd say somewhere in the middle of the pack. Also, finished The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams and thought it was very mediocre. I really enjoyed the first Otherland book by Williams, thought it was brilliant, but this and The Dragonbone Chair have fallen a bit flat for me. Next up is The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King.
There are some def slow moments in The Dragonbone Chair but it is a good fantasy read if completed.
I plan on reading the rest of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn even though I wasn't crazy about the first one.

Just started The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I'm not really sure where the book is going to go but I'm enjoying the scholar/Dracula-hunting stuff.

Just finished The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie and now I've started Before They are Hanged. Good stuff. I actually have Bakker's The Darkness that Comes Before and Infinite Jest sitting here but I got a Kindle for Christmas and downloaded Abercrombie for fun and now I've got to finish the series before I move on to Bakker.
Always reading Steven Erikson, China Mieville, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Dan Simmons, Alastair Reynolds, Joe Abercrombie, and Christopher Moore.

Finished City of Ruin by Mark Charan Newton. A really gripping novel. Definitely an improvement over Nights of Villjamur

Finished "The Way of Kings" yesterday. Despite some minor annoyances, I thought it was awesome. Especially the last 100-150 pages, fucking epic.

Ok I just finished Brent Weeks' Shadow's Edge and have the third book Beyond the Shadow downloaded on my Nook but my copy of Stonewielder finally showed up the other day after taking longer than a month to make the trek from the Book Depository to my front door. So should I finish the Night Angel trilogy or should I leave off the last book and read Stonewielder first? Any suggestions...

Personally I'd say finish up the Night Angel series...as the second and third book really work in unison with one another as one large volume....then hit up Stonewielder.

Finished "The Sword of the Lictor", volume 3 in the Book of New Sun. I like this series, though I have almost no idea as to where it's going, still. and this is after finishing 3 books out of 4.
also contemplating what i'll be reading while in school, since i'll have to bring those books with me tomorrow. I'm thinking of giving Mistrborn a miss for now, since the 3 books would take up a lot of space. I'm bringing "the Drawing of the three", as per my New year's resolution and also probably Paul Kearney's "monarchies of God", because they are small books and shouldn't take up much space.

Nearly a third of the way into The Historian. It's getting a bit cheesy, with librarians apparently working for Dracula and attacking people randomly. It's all a bit schlocky to be honest. Not sure whether I'll finish it.

Yeah, that was my issue with the book. It starts out very interesting, but the more it goes on the more b-movie it gets...and not in a good way.

Just started reading Five Greatest Warriors by Matthew Reilly... It's quite hilariously badly written; I mean, it reads like bad fanfic. I can see what he's trying to do; a bunch of supercool badasses fighting against ancient global conspiracies for the fate of the entire world... It just... he has the language and characterisation skills of a remarkably unsophisticated ten year old . It's quite painful to read.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell

Well I've already started Stonewielder so Beyond the Shadow is going to have to wait til I'm finished with that... I just couldn't stay away from the world of Malaz any longer... it had been too long since I'd journeyed there...

Well, during the flight, I have finished "Citadel of the Autarch" and thus, the Book of the New Sun. It was... interesting. all the wordiness challenges aside, I found it to be an interesting work, even if there was no real conclusion. I mean
and it didn't really provide a resolution. But, since that's how i'm expecting MBotF to end, I suppose I can't complain of that. this was just another "slice of history", and I've enjoyed the ride.
NExt up, i'll give Paul Kearney an shot. Either "the Ten Thousand" or the "Monarchies of God" series. any suggestons?

The Urth of the New Sun is the resolution. A complete mind-fuck of a resolution, but one nonetheless.

the whole "Severian becomes an autarch" thing was pretty obvious from somewhere in Book 2
Actually, Severian gives it away at the end of the very first chapter of the first book:
Severian said:
It was in this fashion that I began the long journey by which I have backed into the throne.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
