I'm well into Shadow of the Torturer, vol 1 Of the Book of the New Sun. liking so far. I can understand the complaints some people make against Wolfe for his wordiness, but in most cases, the word can be understood from context. Given this is how I learned most of my English vocabulary (reading Weis & Hickman and figuring stuff out from context), i don't mind this.

Started David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest on the train to work this morning. So far so good.

The Blade Itself by Jpe Abercrombie. I thought it was decent. I almost gave up about half way through as it was nothing special and a lot of torturing. The second half was better as things get explained and more fantasy elements come onto play. I liked it enough to read the next book.

Next up The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

ASOS is the best one in the series of the 4 that have been released. It is so bananas that I can't even explain.

Just be prepared to be a bit let down by the 4th book AFFC. If ASOS is someone having a batshit awesome party....AFFC is the janitor cleaning up afterward....and while it is needed, it ain't that fun to watch. LOL

It's more refined than A game of Thrones for sure, just not quite as captivating. Maybe because the first one was so shockingly good compared to other stuff I've read...

kinda sits at top spot in my brain like Gardens of the Moon from MBotF, even though there were technically better and more refined books later in that series.

Hold your thoughts till you finish ASOS. It seriously ramps shit up as it goes on.

And AFFC was tedious. necessary, sure, but SOOOOO unfulfilling. I would honestly recommend waiting till ADWD is out and thn reading the two back2back.

Just a note to say, before I started Infinite Jest, I finished Cast In Secret by Michelle Sagara [West]. Anyone else reading these? Michelle West wrote the Sun Sword series, which I loved, and the Cast In [X] series is different, but equally involving.

Okay, after 140 pages of THE PATH Of DAGGERS where the only thing that happens is the supergirls finally use the Bowl Of Winds...I stopped reading it. I have a download of the audio book and I think it might be less painful to listen to the 8th WOT book. I wanna get to Knife Of Dreams where I hear things pick up. Sigh. I'll get there, I promise.

That said, I realized that I still had not read THE RETURN OF THE CRIMSON GUARD by ICE.....how silly of me. Anyways, 40 pages in so far and it's pretty damn fine and just what the doctor ordered after the boredom that was the 8th Jordan book.

Just started Heroes Die after hearing all the praise in this forum. I also like novels that merge Fantasy and SciFi.

I am loving that ASOS book. Could not sleep because of garlic-induced nightmares last night and ploughed through a good section.

All the story strings are so strong in this novel. There's not a single character that comes up and I'm like "dang...gotta get through this shit chapter to get back to Jon's adventures up north". All the chapters are great.

Especially loving:

Yep. Just wait. It gets better! I tell you by the end it is the party/war to end all parties/wars on the whole continent of Westeros.

Man I loved ASOS!

Spoiler

I don't follow author blogs at all, so I could be waaay off base here, but I really get the feeling GRRM's favourite part is writing the night's watch plotline. He's a very skilled author and I have no trouble conjuring images of scenes at any place in the book, but the whole thing seems to get a little extra polish on the night's watch chapters. For some reason those parts of the book really pop in my brain to the point where I almost have audio to accompany my extra-vivid mental images.

Or maybe it's just cause I like the plot line the best of all so far.

Whatev. Praise for this book.

Yeah, I think because the Watch's stuff is so mysterious and intrgiuing, not to mention there is this aspect of...here are veterans and criminals who can fight and have nothing to lose training younger men to do the same to fight something that needed a giant ass ice wall to keep out. That's thick with the awesome, so I am sure you are right and GRRM enjoys those bits. I think that is why Jon Snow has been a main character POV for all this time.
