Just finished Ken Scholes' Lamentation.
With cool concepts, endearing characters, and a panoply of plotlines, Lamentation is a strong debut. Not in the same category as Patrick Rothfuss, Scott Lynch, or Naomi Novik, but a quality read nonetheless.
It's too early to tell just how good a fantasy series The Psalms of Isaak will turn out to be. But based on the potential displayed by Lamentation, it shows great promise. Only time will tell. . .
Check the blog for the full review. . .

Dust of Dreams by Steven Erikson
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.
Just look at em' now, already pullin' the plow. So quick to take to grain, like some old mule.

After about a year (and three attempts to get into the book) I have finally finished 'Toll the Hounds'! It errs far too much on the side of verbosity (owing to a certain Pov character) and is very slow and heavy going. At the same time though, it's full of everything that makes a Malazan book great; you just have to be prepared to go looking for it... My full review is over Here. I picked up Dan Abnett's Warhammer 40K novel 'Blood Pact' for a read and it's turning out to be very good. I'm also finishing off a couple of others...

I'm currently reading "Public Enemies: America's greatest crime wave and the birth of the FBI, 1933-34" by Bryan Burrough and after that it's going to be "The meaning of Night" by Michael Cox.

Dave Egger's A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. It's easily one of the best books I've ever read. It's sad, yet funny, and thought provoking all at the same time.

Finished reading Dan Abnett's 'Blood Pact', latest in his 'Gaunt's Ghosts' series set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Apart from one minor niggle (jumping to conclusions without anything to base it on... and still being right!) this book hit all the right targets as far as I was concerned and I'm going to be searching out all the prior books in the series based on my enjoying this book. My full review is over Here. I'm now finishing off Nick Kyme's 'Salamander' and I've also got 'Wolfbreed' (S.A. Swann) on the go...

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. If you liked Abnetts 'Gaunts Ghosts' series, then you should give his 'Eisenhorn' and 'Ravenor' trilogy's a try as well. They are more like sci-fi detective novels dealing with the Inquisition then with the imperial Guard. Also Gav Thorpe's 'Last Chancers' are good so are Graham Mcneill 40K novels. Just stay away from Ben Counter, worse author of warhammer out there.
Since it is going to be a while before l get Dust of Dreams, I'm doing a reread of the rest starting with Night of Knives.

Finished Fionavar 1: The Summer Tree... halfway through Fionavar 2: The Wandering Fire...
The whole
Hope I can finish the whole Fionavar Tapestry before DoD gets here (I obsessively check the mailbox every day, even though it only shipped from the UK on Monday or something and the delivery estimate says 1 Sep)... Sigh...
The whole
Spoiler
initially surprised me, and is now irritating me. Also, I'd somehow expected very profound writing from GG Kay and so far its no better than... say... Robin Hobb or Tad Williams. Which is to say I am a bit let down. I thought this guy was supposed to be one of the best.Hope I can finish the whole Fionavar Tapestry before DoD gets here (I obsessively check the mailbox every day, even though it only shipped from the UK on Monday or something and the delivery estimate says 1 Sep)... If you like this, the rest of the series is online for free. I thoroughly enjoyed the series, and THE SHIVA OPTION is a totally satisfying conclusion.
