Finished reading Nick Kyme's Warhammer 40K novel 'Salamander' this morning. The battle scenes are a little over the top, and it's very much a 'first book in a trilogy', but overall it was good fun to get into and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. My full review is over Here. I'm now well into 'Wolfbreed'...

Hey, Abyss? I'm reading DoD. Again. But i want you to know i feel bad about it. Horrible even. In fact, PM me your address, i'll stop my reread immediately and same day express post it to you immediately at my own expense. I am not worthy. And i smell funny.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Oh man, I chortled at that. That was evil.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

Finished Fool's Errand and Golden Fool.

A few months ago I re-read The Farseer and The Liveship Traders trilogies. Loved them as much or even more than when I read them first time 7 years ago. However, The Tawny Man trilogy is a major disappointment so far.
1. The major storyline/plot is very "local", no grand scale plot as it was in the first two trilogies.
2. So many boring descriptions, unbelievable.
3. Hobb's obsession with describing all sorts of gowns, clothes is driving me nuts.
4. Unwarranted number of repeating of what happened in the first two trilogies. Even repeatings within the book itself of what happened a few chapters before!
5. If I didn't know Robin Hobb, I would give up on Fool's Errand after the first 50-100 pages, because I would believe I picked up chick lit by mistake instead of fantasy.

Golden Fool was slightly better than Fool's Errand but still sucks in comparison.
Anyone who says that one can read The Tawny Man right after The Farseer, thus bypassing The Liveship Traders is giving a very bad advice because if a person decides they would like to read The Liveship Traders after The Farseer & The Tawny Man, will be disappointed because there are way too many spoilers in The Tawny Man about The Liveship Traders.

I'm somewhat surprised that you hadn't read Foucault's Pendulum already. It would seem right up your street. It's a book I adore, despite it holding the record for the book it took me longest to read (two years btw, I kept on getting bogged down in the interlude in Brazil, which adds nothing to the piece imo, giving up and then having to restart it again)

I like to think of it as The Da Vinci Code for grownups...

I admit I am surprised myself, at having not read it, You're right it is someting that would be right up my alley as far as books go.

I've got about three hundred pages left, and I am feeling a bit bogged down by it at the moment. The Brazil section was the least enjoyable for me so far, and took quite a bit of time for me to get through. I agree that it adds little or nothing to the book, other than introducing Aglie. I was not a fan of Amparo, and feel that the whole section regarding Brazil could have been left out entirely. I found it much better going once Casaubon returned to Milan. In my opinion some of the best portions of the book thus far have been the conversations between, Belbo, Casaubon and Diotallevi. I was glad to see there is much more of that happening now that the whole Brazil bit is over. Monsieur Garamond is a real laugh, and now that the Hermes project is underway the book seems to be really coming together, albeit slowly.

I don't think it will take me two years to read the book, but it's certainly taken me longer so far that I thought it would. There are definite flashes of birlliance throughout, and despite the heaviness of the book I have a feeling I am going to come out of it thinking it's absolutely fantastic. I just need to perservere and get there.

And yes I would agree it is Da Vinici Code for adults. Adults who don't mind a challenging read that is!

That is one of my fav books. I perused many lists of books in my local library to find something similar and was sorely disappointed. Then after 10 years Dan Brown came and the market suddenly exploded. But none of those writesrs made me feel quite as much in the know. At one point (and I wasin my teens) I was terrified of being abducted/killed by monks because I had realised too much about the secrets of the world. No book has ever made me this paranoid! And I have read it many times. :)

Reding 'Fallen Angels' Mike Lee - the ongoing saga of the Emperium ...my little vice :D

Now reading The Stars at War by David Weber and Steve White, an omnibus which contains Crusade and in Death Ground.

If you like this, the rest of the series is online for free. I thoroughly enjoyed the series, and THE SHIVA OPTION is a totally satisfying conclusion.

I did like it, the style of writing reminded me of Cooks Black Company. I'll be sure to look up the last book, cheers for that.

Done a fair bit of reading.
The Thousand Fold Thought. I believe this book suffered more than the others in having a slow beginning because being rather small, things didn't start to kick in till Shimeh. But since the Siege of Shimeh was awsesome I'm not going to bother.
The Fall of Kings by Gemmell. I believe it was a fairly good ending to an epic cycle. I don't know if the translation helped but I didn't feel much the fact that it was written by two authors.
The Chronicles of the Black Company. Pretty impressive stuff, even more considering it wasn't written recently.

Almost finished The Judging Eye.

Well I've started The Meaning of Night and it has me hooked! Seriously, I began it last night and I'm 140 pages in and itching to get back to it. Now I understand why the author was nominated for an award...tis a very good read.

Now the problem is that I have nothing new to read after I've finished it...I have DoD on preorder (release date September 1st here in Canada) along with a few other books but what'll I do until then? I know it won't take me more than 2 or 3 days to finish Night. Ah well, I guess I'll try and find something interesting to re-read in the meantime... :p

Picked up THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO by Stieg Larsson.....I hear it's good.....we'll see.

Just finished a re-read of THE SHADOW OF THE WIND by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (still such a brilliant gothic read the second time around!!!)...and I wanted to take a quick break before going to read his newest volume to take place in Barcelona and feature the cemetery of forgotten books, THE ANGEL'S GAME....but it's next up on my list after this swedish thriller.

Okay, so I read about 50 pages of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and oh my god was I bored!!

the words "financial intrigue" were part of the blurb on the back cover.....well, the whole first 50 pages was financial intrigue, and I was BOOOOOORED!

So, I ran back out, returned it to Indigo, and bought a brand spankety new copy of The ANGEL'S GAME by Carlos Ruiz Zafon instead.....I feel much better now.

I'm still struggling through Gormenghast. The first book was pretty good, but the second one is sure taking its sweet time to start getting interesting. I've got Paul Kearney's The Ten Thousand sitting on my nightstand, just in case.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

About 100 pages to go in DEAD BEAT by Jim Butcher, one of the Dresden Files series. Really good.

I'll probably head to the local library to pick up the next intstallment later today, and then cross my fingers that my copy of DoD will arrive in the post sometime soon.

I pre-ordered Dust of Dreams but I didn't realize they hadn't charged it already, so now I'm waiting for money so I can get it. So I started re-reading WoT. I think it's actually been about 2-3 years since I re-read it. I go through the books so much looking up random quotes that it hasn't been necessary. But I am starting to forget details in between the most important bits, so I'm enjoying the re-read.

So, currently reading The Eye of the World.
