My first punishment for losing that NFL bet with GRRM was reading Peter S. Beagle's A Fine and Private Place. This graceful tale of love and hope will not disappoint.

Finished Nights of Knives. The story itself was interesting but I found ICE's writing, well, boring.

Just finished "Born Queen" by Greg Keyes. Not a great ending to the series i thought.
I'm finally starting the Dresden Files tonight. Just bought Storm Front and i'm gonna give it a go.

Yeah, Born Queen felt REALLY rushed.
I finished "The Naked God' yesterday.
I can see why people consider the ending a letdown.
I did enjoy the series overall, and up untill the last two chapters or so, I thought the series was pretty great.
Think I'll be reading "the Judging Eye" next...

I'm three quarters of the way through Gilman's Gears of the City, which is his follow up to Thunderer. So far I can't stand it! I am so disappointed! I really enjoyed Thunderer, but felt he didn't have the opportunity to do everything with it that he might have wanted. I was expecting the follow up to be just as good or even better and expand on the depths of the city he had begun to allude to. Well it's far from it, he's taken a really odd approach to expanding on the whole thing. The pacing is terrible and his writing style seems to have changed quite a bit. I'm finding the whole thing extremely annoying and frustrating, I can't wait to get through it so I can get on to something else. This is a huge downer as I was so excited to pick this book up after having read the first one. Maybe the last quarter of the book will redeem the whole thing for me but I highly doubt it!

I'm currently off work for a week of leave, during which I hope to catch up with my sorely neglected reading pile.
The things that are sitting there at the moment, making me feel guilty, are:
Symbolic Machine Logic: The Complete Popbot by Ashley Wood
Generation Kill by Evan Wright
Relativity by Albert Einstein
Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
With a certain amount of application on my part, all of them should be done and dusted by the end of the week... *looks around feverishly for some wood to touch*

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I finished "The Crown Conspiracy" by Michael J. Sullivan. I am glad that for a year now my access to small and independent publishers' titles is easier for me, because otherwise it is possible I would have missed some titles like this one. "The Crown Conspiracy" is an entertaining read, action-packed and which kept me hooked from the first page until the last. I certainly like to see how this series develops. (my full review)

I've just finished Carolyn Turgeon's 'Godmother', a look at how the Cinderella story might really have gone and what the consquences were... 'Godmother' is a slow old read but magical at the same time, the story has a dark edge to it and leaves you with plenty of questions. My full review is over Here.

Finished The Club Dumas. I enjoyed but was a bit surprised that in the list of the demons in literature there wasn't Wotan from Master and Marguerite.

hate to be picky, but wasn't it Voland?
or do I need a re-read...
i've been forced to stop about halfway through the Judging Eye due to a load of classwork. i'll be resuming reading that now, but out of some early impressions, there's one PoV that I dislike and am tempted to skip their chapters when reading. the rest is brilliant though.

Finished the Judging Eye
overall superb book, though there were certain parts where the amount of adjectives bored me to tears.
next up: "Before they are hanged" by Abercrombie....
