It was also Abnetts first proper novel afaik. His writing comes on leaps and bounds quickly as the series progresses

Started up What the Hell did I just Read, the third John Dies at the End book by David Wong. It hits the ground running and I'm still laughing out loud every few pages:

Quote

It may look completely different now. Do you understand?”
“What, like a disguise?”
“Once,” I said, “we had a dainty young woman come in asking us to investigate a haunting in her parents’ house. We walk in, the door slams behind us, and the woman falls apart. All that’s left is a pile of snakes where the girl had been standing, patches of their scales colored like the dress she’d been wearing.”
Ted tried to picture it. “The whole time you talked to her, you didn’t notice she was snakes?”
John said, “They have, uh, techniques, for that.”
I said, “And then John started dating a girl named Nicky who I assumed was made out of snakes but it turned out that’s just the way she is.”
“She has been nothing but nice to you, Dave.”

This.

I love that series and it gets better with every book.

Currently reading Asher's The Line of Polity, the second book in his Agent Cormac series, and it's very good so far. I did like the first book. Years ago I read the first Spatterjay book, really liked it, but haven't read any more Asher until recently. Sorry I waited so long, and yes I recommend him.

I also recommend Abnett. He's a highly regarded writer both in Warhammer and in comics.

Still reading What the Hell did I just Read:

Quote

“I’ve seen things you wouldn’t believe.
I have seen a snail get eaten by a bird, survive its digestive tract, then get shit out two hundred miles away onto the roof of the World Trade Center, five minutes before the first plane hit. I have seen a man’s body obliterated by a train because he was trying to retrieve a dropped slip of paper that a woman had written her phone number on, not realizing the number was fake. I have seen an entire species-changing genetic line wiped out when a single Homo erectus got his dick stuck while humping a knothole.
All these moments forgotten, like piss in a swimming pool. Time to die.”

My love for these books is disproportionate.

Finished What the Hell. Probably the best one yet. I was annoyed that the book states it's been seven in book years but there's no real progress on John and David's part but the book seems to address that at the end.. will be interesting to see where it goes.

Checked the author's website and the next book is planned for a 2022 release.

Back to Gaunt's Ghosts, Book 2: Ghostmaker.

Finished Ghostmaker, the second Gaunt's Ghosts book. Not sure if the writing is improving but my connection to the company is growing. Strange book structure. Read more like a clip episode in a TV show or a book compilation than a full book but the ending was interesting. The Eldar that pop up at the end seemed really powerful.

Also Abnett is really good at coming up with rival Guard companies that you just utterly loath.

Next book is called Necropolis. I hope this is a Necron book.

In between I've started T.J. Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea. It's about a civil servants who inspects orphanages and institutions for magical kids.

It's fun so far. I was a bit annoyed by the stereotypical mild mannered, pushover protagonist set-up - until the writing won me over. I realized this basically reads like a Disney cartoon and you can practically picture all the exaggerated characters, animations and scary office people.

Edit: Oh boy, apparently the place he visits in this book is a place for six children one of which is Lucy, aka The Anti-christ. This is going to be fun.

Two thirds through The House in the Cerulean Sea. This is a wonderful book. It's full of heartwarming kids and an underlying criticisms of bigotry and fear. I can see why it got such a great reception last year.

Also Lucifer is adorable.

Finished The Traitor Baru Cormorant and wow I'm so glad I read it. What a fantastically created world, and such an anti-hero of a main character. Going to probably had straight into Monster but I've also got so many other books ready for me to crack on with I'm just not sure...

If you take a break in the Cormorant series, I would recommend you take it in between the first and second, rather than the second and third. There's quite a bit that flows between books two and three.

Going from 1 straight to 2 can be a little annoying, because (abstract spoiler)

Spoiler

... but I thought 2 and 3 were significantly better than 1 (though the audiobook performances may have influenced my evaluation---performer did an exceptionally bad job on 1). Also bear in mind that it's not a trilogy, and the last book has yet to come out.

Started Glen Cooks The Dragon Never Sleeps and it seems pretty cool so far, some kind of weird space opera.
