Grr Amazon says Licanus 3 paper back is 12/8/20. I still wonder why it didn’t go TPB right away just like the other 2,, made no sense to me

I got the TPB in January from a UK seller through Abebooks.

Motherfucker.... I don’t understand why my bookstore shitty as it is didn’t have it then. When I asked them at counter to order it it was nonexistent and 3 had been out awhile at that point. Is it the white cover issue?

It's not out in TPB in the US. It's only in the UK. The UK releases TPBs for all books way earlier than the US.

Just Finished NEVER DIE, which was very entertaining. It truly is a wuxia film in book form.... demons, sword duels, absurd martial arts techniques... it's fairly short, moves along quickly... I enjoyed. May check out the author's other work.

Now back INTO PRIORY OF THE ORANGE TREE. Yes, again.

Still eye rolling at times.... ffs monologuing... really? ....but the pace picked up and I actually want to know how it ends even if getting there is meh at times.

99% sure your Orange Tree is electric yes?

My edit didn’t go through. I have heard that the cover has really shitty ink that will smudge fairly easily which is a shame cause it is actually quite lovely in some places.

This is a thing that bugs me with some hardcovers...you take the slip cover off as not to ruin it while reading, but the physical cover of the book is printed with cruddy ink that rubs off all over your hands. I've had a number of these.

And yeah, the PRIORY cover is a gorgeous piece of art. That said, I have it in ebook, so no smudge worries on my end.

-------

On my end, I can't deiced whether to read THE GIRL & THE STARS by Lawrence next, or one of the MURDERBOT books I got free, or finally read LICANIUS 3 and finish that series. I am indecisive...leaning towards Lawrence tho becuase I love his work so much...

Finished "Pushing Ice" , and yep, it ended in a total CF as expected.

The entire character dynamic it was built around wasn't all that strong, imo.

The science is cool, albeit also scary, and the descriptions of the hostility of space game me some anxiety and drowning flashbacks; suffice it to say I'm the kind of person to stay the hell away from vacuum. But I guess the fact that he was able to elicit such strong reactions in me speaks to Reynolds' proficiency as a writer.

Moving on, I think I'll tackle one of my oldest unread books next- "Fugitive Prince", the 4th Wars of Light and Shadow book.

Finished Appearance of Hope last night.

I'd say I preferred Touch a bit more, still an good read, but it gets a bit disjointed in places for me.

Lifted Parker's 16 ways to defend a walled city.

Felt like I needed to jump back into some fantasy and wanted a standalone, there it was on the shelf!

Jumped back into Fitz & The Fool with FOOL'S QUEST, and it's hitting the spot after diving deep into DUNE & DUNE MESSIAH. Needed some slower fantasy.

Finished Lovecraft Country which was very enjoyable. Worth a look by any lovecraft fan. A Jim Crow view on some of what Lovecraft writes through a series of interconnected stories. Only one of them was a bit turgid but it picked up at the end to make it worth it. Writing and pacing both good and the character development and growth is well pitched.

Enjoying Gideon the Ninth. Lots of little hints throughout that I'm not yet able to pull into the bigger picture.

I might start Gaunts Ghosts after the chat in here to see what I make of it.

Turns out Lovecraft Country is being turned into TV by HBO: https://twitter.com/...7626655744?s=19

Finished 16 ways to defend a walled city.

Very different, fun, but entirely too many dues ex to be taken anyway seriously, but the narrators voice helps that float by.

Kind of a snap shock ending, but it suited well enough

I finished Sword of Kaigan yesterday. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed a story of wizard samurai fighting wizard invaders in a post industrialization fantasy Japan, but here we are. Struggled with one of the characters, her inability to see what was going on, despite her background, got a little jarring in places, but it got a lot better by the end.

Obligatory reminder that we started the May reread of Midnight Tides.

Discussion thread here:

I'd forgotten how epic the prologue of Midnight Tides is.

Read Calgar's Fury. Definitely way superior to all other Black Library stuff - bar maybe Abnett on a good day - because Paul Kearney.

Very good with the slow increase of tension, among the other usual aspects of characterisation, plot and action.

Yes, posted a quick line about it on 25 June. Enjoyed.

Frankly I haven't yet read anything by Paul Kearney I haven't enjoyed. Even stuff like the end of Monarchies of God was still good, just not as good as he can do.

I hope I haven't jinxed myself because I've read some wildly differing reviews of The Wolf in the Attic, and it's in the TRP.

So I've just discovered tons of Redwall books at my parents house. Dunno if any of you have read them but I devoured them when I was younger.

Definitely going to have a read through at least a few of them!

Also finished book 10 of the Saxon Stories The Flame Bearer and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I was a bit meh about the prior entry but this was jolly good fun. Will probably go straight into War of the Wolf .
