Gideon is brilliant. I got halfway through it last night.

Dragon Punch, a colloquial term for a reversal in fighting games characterised by very quick startup, very long and vulnerable recovery frames and usually a generous amount of invulnerable frames when rising. A DP will usually put you airborne at the end of it and usually can't be combo'd from,

So it IS a sex thing.

Also re Gideon I will take some opinions from my reading group. From what you guys say it all sounds dandy but I'm not getting burned by a hype train for a third time.

Good to know Abyss I've got that one in my Audible library, though it'll be ages cos I'm working through Memory Sorrow Thorn and those books are long!

Well, hey, when you're done with that 90ish slogging hours from now (130 if you include the new books) you'll have a nice change of pace standing by.

- Abyss, has always thought MS&T would have been vastly improved by the addition of Lesbian Necromancers.

It's funny isn't it...? ....those times when a chunk of this Forum gets all buzzy about a book and some little part of your brain just wants.... very water-cooler'esque.

Stop fighting it. Stross himself wrote a blurb, possibly the bestest blurb, for GIDEON... he'll forgive you.

...also, ACCELERANDO kind of sucked.

Tried Jeff Salyards SCOURGE OF THE BETRAYER. Fucking hell, what a pretentious load of twaddle. Not for me.

Uh. What? You've said some bizarre things on this board, Scott, but... WHAT?

Edit: All the rest of you guys should go buy/read Salyards' trilogy. It's great! (He says, still needing to read the third book.)

Mac... i get it. I do.
I'm always all about ignoring the hype, waiting til the series is done... but... Stross, then Schwab THEN frikkin Ellis
And now a chunk of the more active forumites at least some who can be trusted some of the time.

It's Lesbian necromancers in space, Mac.

Necromancers.

In Space.

Some of whom are Lesbians (or possibly bi or nb, to be honest i'm not sure yet).

There is a time to stand on principle, and there is a time to run with the pack. Join us, Mac. Join us over here, where the walls are gritty black and the swords are stabby and the Lesbian (or bi) swordmasters wear facepaint and sunglasses and say things like "I think i really want to fight that thing." and endearingly call people 'shitheel'.

In other news, i'm gonna go start a discussion thread...

I may or may not purchase and read Gideon the Ninth in a timely manner, but I will never commit to it.

Not really a spoiler, but I'll spoiler it anyways:

Y'know, this comparison is appropriate.
...first book, new author, 'edgy', crosses genre lines...

Gideon The Ninth doesn't want your commitment worry, just your money and possibly your blood, soul, and/or bones.

It's the same publisher (Tor.com) so I would tentatively say yes?
