Thrawn by Tim Zahn.

Ol' Blue Skin/Red Eyes is back and in top form. ;)

Kitsu liked it Sombre. I still am remaining firm reading no NUcanon.

I'm wondering what book will have to come out to break you into reading it...I would have thought it would have been Thrawn...but your resilience is strong.

Finished Heart of Darkness. Excellent little read. Sword of Destiny continues to be awesome.

It was definitely the book I feared the most. We shall see but I think it's safe to say I'm movie only now. If something caught my eye I think it would be something set in TOR or Knight Errant time periods.

I haven't read any other Nu stuff nor have I been tempted. But I have always been a big fan of Thrawn ever since Tim Zahn created him in the first official EU works after the films, way back when.

Finished FoL. Heavy going with some golden malazan chapters. I found FoD better on the reread and I think it'll be the same for this too. Not sure I'm up for that for a whole though.

Now onto Dancer's Lament.

Just finished the Forgetting Moon.

Man this was a frustrating and disappointing book.

I'm with Morgoth on this one QT. I can't see ms being bothered to pick up the sequel.
None of the 'revelations' were surprising, most were telegraphed in from the outset.
By turns it was childish then attempted to be dark then was annoyingly basic and childish again.
Blegh.
Oh look, the dwarves live in the Iron Hills. I wonder if Dain still rules there

Sorry you didn't like it man. I figured you might fall on Morgy's side.

The Stand by Stephen King is pretty intense.

I still can't work out how much I loved or didn't love that book. I mean the story is fantastic and the characters compelling. But King sure loves the sound of his own voice (in written form...)

I did love it but it was quite hard going at points.

I've read and reread the Stand a number of times because I absolutely loved it. But that was 30 years ago or more. Since then my ardor for King has cooled considerably. I'd be afraid to even start it today.

I also acquired the extended version I think, which I didn't know at the time. Thankfully it's on the kindle so I can transport it without shooting out my back.

I get why you liked it QT, just for me the author didn't achieve at all what he was trying to do with the tropes and genre. Ambitious but just Hella flawed. Was this a debut? It's entirely possible its first book syndrome and he will up his game but I'M need to read some seriously positive reviews before trying to another 700 pages of that.

I read the unabridged version back in the late 80s. I liked the story and was surprised how quickly I finished it, it didn't feel like a 1,000 page book, but wasn't amazed by it.

I've wondered if if I'm less impressed with Kings "epics" because of all the fantasy I've read. It's kinda numbed me to King's world building unlike some of my friends and family who are amazed by The Stand and The Dark Tower series.

I still like his books, but I like the more contemporary ones like Pet Cemetery and Salem's Lot.

Yeah it was his first book. And yeah, hopefully he deals with some of his more glaring flaws in the next book.

Read McClellans Sins of Empire, the first in his new series.
Set in the same world as the Powder mate trilogy, some 10 years later.
I'd say hes stepped up a level on his writing, and the plot was certainly less predictable than the powder mages. He writes action and battles scenes very well, imo, and has crafted a few great characters in this novel who can take and dish out a beating.
If you liked powder mages, you find no faults here.

I've been meaning to get back around to this for quite awhile now.

Also did you ever read Masters of Rome set I was telling you about in 2015?

Sins of Empire was an excellent read. I am very excited for the rest of the trilogy, as McClellan definitely did step up his writing

Hmm, that reminds me, II still gotta read Vol 3...

Liking the second Marshall book so far. Some 9 chapters in, and everyone except Maroto is basically bitching about the burden of making decisions that make many people die. Everyone is so refreshingly un-heroic, you can't help but smile inside at how messed a place the Star is.

Rereading the Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, because I picked up the latter 3 so cheaply. Man I forgot how much I loved these books. And yes, the TV show is immense too, one of the few where I enjoy book and show in almost equal measure!

Glad you read Rome. I was very sad at the time reading them and finding out she died though idk if she ever planned to write a bk 8 or not but I would have loved her style going forward with Augusts early ruling yrs or any time of the Empire in her words. Ed this is something I think Ando might really really like.

On Powdermage I only have bk 1 and remember very little except a cool chef and people snort black powder like cocaine.

If I remember correctly, she wanted to end the series after October Horse, but fans clamoured for an Anthony/Cleopatra book. I don't think she really wanted to go any further, though with her hints at Arminius, I'd have liked to see her take on him. It would have been an unusual interpretation of the character, to be sure.

Well, I'm writing my own version anyway. :D

I read the first Powdermage book and bought the rest, but somehow, they slipped out of my focus. Probably need to reread the first book and then blow through the sequels - I remember it was a fast and fun read.

I still have the first Rome book in my ToRead pile....every time I look at it I get detracted by its sheer size. It's good to hear it's so good!

Great scott Scott, you need to remedy that asap. That set is so binge read worthy. May take a 40-50 pgs to get into book 1 but damn it works once hook is set.

I'll line it up soon. Thanks man!

While we are at it...you need to read Wilbur Smith's RIVER GOD. Phenomenal Ancient Egypt series!
