About halfway through book 1 of WoT. It's not that it's bad, but it just doesn't grab me by the throat.

So I'm taking a break and have started Gardens of the Moon, which I am racing through nicely. Maybe 'll get back to Jordan after I finish The Crippled God. :)

Pretty sure that's a no. Also I don't see that the wiki has anything about Baudin Sr.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

BK I read the whole series a couple of years back and still remember stuff. Post in the dedthreads, I will try to help.

In other news, I finished Girl on the Train. A very decided meh.

In happier news started Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries novella. Very interesting.

I've been making my way through Reynolds' anthology Beyond The Aquila Rift over the past two weeks. It's a highly mixed bag with some really good stories ('Minla's Flowers', 'Thousandth Night', 'Beyond The Aquila Rift', 'Fury', 'Troika' [which was especially haunting]) and some that had potential but fell short of really grabbing me in the end ('Sleepover', 'The Star Surgeon's Apprentice', 'Vainglory') due to being too short or just having one cool conceit that can't support the rest of the story.

Spoiler

Still got a few stories left. Sort of can't wait to finish it though because it's a massive brick of dead cellulose that I've been carrying back and forth on my commute lol.

After finishing this, I think I'll take a break from Reynolds for a while — saving Revenger and his Poseidon's Children stuff for another time — and read somebody else. Maybe something a little lighter to cleanse my brainpan before diving into another intense author.

Finished Martha Wells Murderbot novella All Systems Red - nice little read, some potential there, started Robert Jackson Bennett's City of Miracles.

Got some good progress in on Tad Williams Siege, I think I might finish it tonight.

Finished re-reading/listening to Meluch's Strength and Honor and am listening to both Borne and Too Like the Lightning now. Borne is more of Vandermeer's craziness, which I love. Lightning is a little tough to listen to but it's shaping up. Just takes a while to get into your head.

Finished Siege. It was okay. Far too long and slow and I think the entire Miriamele arc could have been cut drastically.

The Last Mortal Bond by Staveley. I am interested enough to see it through but so far I am not raving about it.

40% into Expanse book 6. I thought book 5 was a step down, but this one is boring me even more. Hopefully the final "trilogy" will bring this series back into high gear for me.

Skullsworn will WOW you. The Last Mortal Bond is a pretty great finish to the main series though.

About a 100 pages into Storm.

Miriamel is becoming a facepalm character. I am not a fan of such explicit stupidity.

Finished "The Vengeance of Rome", the last of the Colonel Pyat Quartet yesterday. Still need to collect my thoughts on that one, but I'll probably post the review sometime this week.

Currently not reading anything at home, since I'm supposed to find time to re-read "Godsdoom" and "Land without Joy", and both I only have in electronic format, and my PC-time is filled with other things (work, mostly) so no reading time.

I'm thinking I'll read A Blade of Black Steel , the second "Crimson Empire" book next. If it's as good as the first one was, I can probably read it both in commute and at home.

I also need to order "The Great Ordeal"off my next paycheck and start a re-read of Bakker's second series in light of "Unholy Consult" coming out in mid-July. So that's scheduled sometime for mid-June.

Finished Storm, Part 2 of Green Angel Tower by Tad Williams.

I did not really like the ending, it felt a bit anti climactic. Also I don't think Simon really developed enough to end up where he did. Neither did Miriamel.

I honestly did not understand the Maegwin sub plot.

Other than that, It was an awesome series. I loved Joshua, but Biniabik was my favourite character, followed closely by Tiamak and Isgrimnur.

Dragonbone Chair was the best book IMO. To Green Angel Tower could have and should have been trimmed a bit.

Also finished City of Miracles by Robert Jackson Bennett. An excellent book and a stellar conclusion to the trilogy.

I love the series but I can't stand Miriamele. She and Sansa could start a Girl's Club. ;)

Finished up Toll the Hounds which had been lying around at 75% for months and realized upon trying to start Dust of Dreams that no Erikson isn't for when you got a few hours here and there at least not in Audiobook form.

Trying the Palace Job it sounds fun and light.

Started reading Courtney Schafer's The Tainted City. Also Heart of Darkness.

Also I started listening to Witcher: Sword of Destiny. I must say I really love the world building and the writing.

So I finished Wilbur Smith’s RIVER GOD and it was absolutely amazing from start to finish. So very few people manage to do Historical Fiction right, and Smith was definitely one of those.

I’ve started book 2 THE SEVENTH SCROLL…and the most interesting part of that, is this one takes place in modern day and concerns the archaeologist who is following the trail left out by the protagonist of RIVER GOD (the slave eunuch Taita) 4000 years before to find the hidden tomb of the Pharaoh from that book who was buried near the source of the Nile and whose tomb may be untouched by ancient or modern grave robbers like so much of Egypt. What an interesting way to pen a sequel that is indirect! And while I’m only about 30 pages into it…I’m already enthralled.

As an aside, book 3 WARLOCK, returns to the past and Taita later in his life.

Just a really awesome and enjoyable series! Anyone into Historical fiction (or as it turns out, Indiana-Jones-like adventures in this second book) should love these books.

Oh, and I also read 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY for the first time. A really excellent little sci-fi book with a really compelling core story. Will definitely be checking out the sequel!
