Isn't the rehash nature part of the in-world story anyway? Characters comment on that being the way the world works, IIRC.

Also, I think the two "autobio" books are actually the best of the series, and kind of a neat idea in general.

It had to do with the way the prophecies worked. It's a neat cheat actually. Author can get away with repeating himself because that's how his world works. So long as Silk keeps running scams and stabbing people in the face, it's all good.

Finished the Waking Fire by Anthony Ryan

This book surprised me. Its a slow and gradual burn, but things really explode in the last part. I loved the world, I love the allusions, I can't wait for the sequel.

Going to start the Riyrya Revelations next with Theft of Swords.

Also. I recently read a short story by Diana Gabaldon and now I think I might actually try Outlander.

I read this short story called Lord John and the Succubus in Legends II. I liked the writing style. And yeah we generally agree on books.

Fitting it in is going to be a problem. Its a big book. And I have Nightmare Stacks+Riyria, not to mention Safehold and a whole bunch of other books - lets see, maybe three books from now.

Just finished Stross' newest The Nightmare Stacks . I was a bit unsure of what I was getting into as the last book was more of a miss than a hit and this one, once again, did not focus on the main character but this was an excellent read. It had all the stuff that I felt the last book was missing and will have some interesting implications for the future of the series.

Next up is unknown as the TRP is too big!

Finished Crossroads of Twilight.

I thought it was ok. Definitely in the bottom half of the series, but not the very bottom book. It at least has the bulk of the series' ongoing plots to stand on, an advantage the earliest truly boring books didn't have. I can see why people are mad about it though. It doesn't even attempt a finale, so it's just like a huge chunk of middle story. Also I actually thought it was RJ's last book besides the novella -- I just now realized there's another book, Knife of Dreams, which I forgot to buy. I liked a few parts of the book a lot: the ghost town of So Habor was rad; Harima (presumably) taking out Aes Sedai is cool (and I also presume she's the gender-swapped Forsaken, given the use of Saidin); the reactions to the "Beacon" of Rand at Shadar Logoth; Lews Therin is always a blast. The book is a lot of setup, that's for sure. But it's there in the title, it's the crossroads before the endgame. It wasn't particularly slower than RJ's usual style either; and I actually liked that there wasn't a random boss battle at the end. I actually think teaming up with the Seanchan, or the White Tower coming back together peacefully, to end up battling the Shaido and the Black Ajah respectively, is a neater twist than another wonky battle.

Also, to hearken back to comments I've made a few times previously, I just wanted to wonder aloud if RJ actually had a sense of humor about all these Aes Sedai names. Is he messing with us, or is he totally earnest about including dozens upon dozens of character names with absolutely no attempt at reminders. This scene where the Hall gathers to find out what people know about the Beacon was seriously ridiculous. Could he have predicted the rise of fan-Wikis years in advance? Or was he just a jerk? Either way it's frustrating and hilarious.

Anyway, yah, it's not a book w/ great momentum by any stretch. I wouldn't call it filler so much as purely connective tissue w/o the endpoints.

Now onto Wheel of Osheim.

Well I wouldn't go that far! I'd still put 4 on top, then 9, then 6&8, then the rest, then the first two. I just think most of them run ~par relative to each other. I can definitely understand how someone reading them as they come out would be saying "get to the point already" though.
