I recall this super weird guy in my highschool English Lit class swore up and down that WAR & PEACE and CRIME & PUNISHMENT were the pinnacle of his enjoyment reading. He even did a class presentation on Tolstoy and how much he admired him and thought he was the best writer the world had yet produced. It was enough to get me to try out W&P...and after a hundred pages or so I stopped and wondered what that weird kid was smoking. Needless to say, I agree...booooooring and not really readable.

On topic, the newborn has not given me much time to read, so I'm still waiting to get a chance to finish up GALAXY IN FLAMES (Horus #3) by Ben Counter and after that I'll give Horus a break for a few books and finally get back to my Tolkien complete works read with TALES OF THE PERILOUS REALM. After that I only have CHILDREN OF HURIN to go of the main books before I start into the History of Middle Earth books.

EDIT: Oh, and heads up to any Tolkien fans, Harper Collins are re-releasing a 208-line poem that's been out of print for 70 years in November called THE LAY OF AOTROU AND ITROUN. It's a mediaval poem that has a witch in it, who would eventually morph into what Galadriel became in LOTR. It's not a Middle-Earth poem, just said to be the inspiration for the eventual elf queen character.

Hi QT, hope the baby is doing fine?

If that was your reaction to the first 100 pages what would you have done with the last 200? The first part actually has social commentary and good battle description, the last part.... its just bad. Rant after rant after rant. he basically gave up trying to tell a story

Baby is doing great! Thanks! She's got a bit of day/night reversal sleeping going on, but otherwise she's wonderful!

Yeah, I wS not feeling it even after the 1st 100pgs...I can't fathom it getting more boring. :)

So I should probably hide the fact that I've reread War and Peace more times than I can remember. :) It's probably right up there with LOTR and Eagle of the Ninth when it comes to rereads. I wrote an essay about it at school as well, but I spared my classmates by making the oral presentation about Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls instead.

The one I pissed off was the teacher who hadn't read either of them. :D

Oh not at all. We all have our favourites. :)

Dang I finished FoL last night about 1am & write a big thing about it but in my tires state I must have not hit send cos it's not there any more.

Either that or the mods are deleting my stuff for some as yet unknown nefarious purpose...

Anyway the gist of it was that I liked it in the whole but it was too dense and a lot of it didn't make too much sense. But again that could have been the tiredness...

I really need to read War and Peace. My dad raves about it. Need to get the right translation, though.

I followed up Seveneves, which was good but also massively disappointing, by reading the first two Xeelee novels for a real proper Big Ideas SF kick since Seveneves left me wanting on that front. They didn't quite hit the spot yet (the second one, Timelike Infinity, goes for it a bit but Baxter is not yet at the peak of his powers then I think), but having not read any solo Baxter for about 15 years after he was among my first post-Clarke SF reading, it's good to get back into it and I'll be into Ring soon enough (first, Flux, the only one I know for certain I've read before). Might go for a comprehensive reading of the whole milieu, short stories etc included, over the next few months/year or so (there's another Xeelee book coming out next year, so it'll be good timing). The scope and ambition of this universe is ridiculous.

But in between I've finally, after sorting out some long-term google play download issues, got the second of Elixabeth Bear's Eternal Sky trilogy so I'm reading that.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Check the FoL forum, duder.

I hope Abyss moves this post to the FoL forum as well, causing further confusion.

Finished "In Dark Service" Suffice it to say, it picks up A LOT. Some good set-up for the sequel. Not on the level of "A Crown for Cold Silver", but a neat story. Some interesting character arcs, too. And now I got another series that needs following. Good recco, Polishgenius, :)

I've only got a 6 more days of commute before my vacation, so don't want to start anything too serious. I think I'll go back The Buried life by Carrie Patel. i started this a while back, then put it down as soon as FoL arrived.

I finished Duncan Hamilton's Society of the Sword Trilogy. I enjoyed it. Don't know if I would reread it at any time. I'm starting Paul Kearney's Monarchies of God series.

Not foolish at all.

Not entirely.

The regret doesn't really sink in until books 4-6.

Glad you liked it. Yeah, it's not like a mindblower or anything, it's just a fun story with some nice touches. I really like the concept of the world.

It turns out that I didn't take a break between Xeelee stories and plunged straight into Flux, and it's incredible how much Baxter improved as a storyteller over just three books back then. Flux is in some ways quite a similar story to Raft but it's better in just about every way.

Oh sheesh, yeah, made that mistake once, years ago when it first came out. No chance of that happening. Also, I have no desire to read the other series he wrote about the knights of the church and their perpetual wondering around (Tamuli? Elenium? I think?)

I think there are only 5 in the Mallorean...

Yeah, sorry, 4-5, not 6. When you realize Eddings is basically retelling the Belgariad. But by then you still want to see how it ends.

worst author cop out death ever.

but also, @abyss, I'm vaguely embarrassed for you that you didn't realise until books 4-5 that the Mallorean was a rehash.

When you're finished Tiste go read Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress back to back, just to finish of the experience.
