Deadhouse Gates. Hmm. Better than Gardens (as many seem to agree), but there are things I really like and things that annoy the **** out of me. The characters' inner dialogs (the stuff in italics) == well, it's not good. See, there's this cardinal rule in writing that goes, 'show, don't tell'. Erikson does WAAAAAAY too much 'telling'. The fact that everyone seems to know what everyone else is going to say before they say it and therefore when they do say it it's not even a completed thought leaving the reader to wonder just what the hell the completed thought WAS? Not good. Felisin? Not good. Should have been left in the gravel pit.

Plot? Good. Chain of Dogs? Good. Not the absolute masterpiece some want to declare it, but still good.

One of the best books I've ever read? No, not even by a long shot. Will I keep reading the series? Of course. Will I dive right into Memories of Ice? No, I'm all 'eliptical writing'ed out at the moment....

I'm also reading Deadhouse Gates at the moment...well, re-reading anyway.

I'm interested, if the Chain of Dogs ranks a 'good' on your scale, what gets a 'great'?

Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

I thought that book kicked arse, I read it on holiday during the daytimes whilst recovering from hangovers.

One of the best I've read IMHO.

At the moment I'm only reading books for uni *grrr*:p

Jonathan Wolff - An Introduction to Political Philosophy
and
John Cottingham - Western Philosophy

but on the 19th I'm getting NoK by ICE!!!!

YAY! :p

Well, I'd heard so much about the 'Chain of Dogs' before reading the book that I was expecting something really inventive. Instead, it's a well-described army (and civilians) in flight for its life. Nothing more, nothing less. True, it's drawn well, but...

I actually thought the sea voyage of Kalam was cooler (but obviously much shorter). Sigh.

Dreams made flesh - Anne Bishop. An excellent book containing four stories. Three from the past, one of the the future. Timeframe: Black Jewel trilogy. She takes the sex a bit further, a tad more explicit, IMO, which might not be what everybody likes. And Jaenelle still kicks ass. Especially on the cover :-)

I put down Vellum after 2oo pages. the book ... I wouldn't say I don't like it, or that I had trouble reading it (as others seemed to have had). But I was having a difficult time realising if the book was **** or not.
I'll probably go back to it when I have nothing better to read.

and I'm reading The Knight - Gene Wolfe. Another splendid offering by this brilliant author.

Am reading The Lies of Locke Lamora - Loki says you guys have discussed it before, with a great disparity of opinion - and I can see why. I'm still waiting for it to get interesting. I am going to keep reading it, but all this to-ing and fro-ing from past to present for the sole purpose of setting up characters that are already sufficiently well drawn to get on with the plot - let's just say it's wearing a tad thin.

Great disparity of opinion? What was Loki talking about? As far as I'm aware everyone on this board who has read it has loved it. There were a few people who said that the flashbacks aren't always conducive to good narrative flow, but that was the only serious complaint I've read.

Loki's name really suits her. (Mischeavous et al.) :p:)

now that is depressing...

Does being the only sane person in the world make you insane?

If a tree falls in the woods and a deaf person saw it, does it make a sound?

I love Dawkins, but he's not the most (ahem) tactful of atheists. :p I read books like this and they give me the fuzzies, but I also wonder just who they're writing them for. Sort of like preaching to the chior (pun very much intended), you think?

I sort of hold to some vaguely Christian spiritual beleifs, so I guess I find Dawkins to be a bit of a breath of fresh air he doesn't pull punches he doesn't try and make you feel nice about what he's saying he jsut says it, and says it well. I get the impression from his foreword in this one that he would be rather upset if more Atheists read it than not some line about

"I hope that everyone who reads this book is an Atheist by the end of it, now thats opptamism."

Or something like that, my copy is currently locked in my girlfriends car and she's sleeping so I can't check... or finish the chapter I was on!

After a long debate that I have held with myself whether to read Dark Elf by Salvatore, Anansi Boys by Gaiman or The Lions of Al Rassan by Kay, I have chosen Dark Elf trilogy.

I am currently reading Elantris by Brandon Sanderson and so far -- fifty pages -- I enjoy it. And it has one of the most essential things for a good book to have: an original story. It is not fair for any book to be squeezed in between Midnight Tides and The Bonehunters, but as the books are significantly different in practically every way I will trie not to compare Sanderson with Erikson too much.

Grimlock: I just bought the first two books of that serie, The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone if I remember correctly, but I am starting to doubt whether that was a smart move or not. Is the book worth reading?
