Book #2 is much better then the first. The first book feels choppy and edited strangely, or something. Lot's of promise in terms of character's/magic system which he delivers in book #2.
Is Bk 2 more military-focused, or is it wide-scope?
I have it sitting on a shelf, but I found the "main" plot to be the most boring part of the book. The PI parts were much better.
Re: the original recco for a "group" of soldiers-cenric fantasy.
Check out Chris Evans. His "Iron Elves" trilo is basically "disgraced commander reforming a uniof misfits with muskets and fighting evil". The writing's so-so but there's some neat ideas. He's got another book out, which is supposedly like fantasy Vietnam War. Haven't had a chance to check that one out yet.
