Finished Umberto Eco's Focault's Pendulum the other day, and I'm about to start Stephenson's Snow Crash.
Btw, nice avatar Leoman, though don't you think its a bit too small?

Kim Stanley Robinson...
Finsihed The Skinner, read Neil Gaiman's Stardust yesterday, and now onto Haruki Murakami's Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. Very odd book, as the title may suggest, and probably looses something in the translation, but still good so far...

Peter Straub, In the Night Room. Beginning looks very good.

At the moment I'm reading nothing, but I just finished 'The Magic of Recluce' and 'The Death of Chaos', by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. They are quite good fantasy books, I must say.

Excellent idea! Though having said that, sending books to South Africa might cos a bit much...

Just finished Clavel's "Gai-jin". I recommend "Shogun", but not "Gaijin".
You’ve never heard of the Silanda? … It’s the ship that made the Warren of Telas run in less than 12 parsecs.

'Medieval Warfare', ed. Maurice Keen. Interesting stuff- I get to unlearn all the stupid stuff reading fantasy taught me.
Also all my exam notes.

Based on it being mentioned in the Oustanding Books thread, I picked up the Spanish bestseller The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos RuÃÂz Zafón.

The Trial by Franz Kafka. Two chapters in and it's pretty good so far.

Yeah I agree. Ultrarealistic would get boring anyway, they had a pitched battle once in a blue moon back in those days. Defensive warfare ruled the roost, till the coming of cannon.

I have completely gone off Eddings. I used to be like that... Can't touch the stuff now, without feeling either ill or traitorous...

no way do fantasy books have enough sieges, y'know?
Fair enough, but how would you write a siege and make it interesting? Can you think of a good siege in fantasy? I'm coming up blank.

'Bout halfway through Singularity Sky by Charles Stross and frankly I find it really bland. Except from a few cool techno ideas (big E.) neither the characters, the worldbuilding, the plot or the proze are very good. This has been one big disappointment for me, can't believe Stross is hailed as the 'next big thing' in SF. Maybe in the short story format it works, but it certainly doesn't work in the novel. I think I'll skim the rest of the book and then get my ass to the library (there's sitting a lonely copy of the book that Brood's reading on a shelf overthere).

Almost finished Runes of the Earth by Stephen Donaldson. Surprisingly good...
