Anathem was excellent. Very deep and philosophical. Now on to Interface.

Finished Dan Simmons' Hyperion quartet 3 days ago

it was an interesting series, my first "heavy" SFF in a while, and the stlistic switches between books took a while to get used to.

The story was interesting overall, employed some great concepts, but I was somewhat underwhelmed at parts, especially in the last two books. There were some episodes I'd have preferred to have expanded on, just to give the books a more "epic" feel.

Overall, a good series.

now, whilst I'm unable to purchase new books, I've started my summer Malaz re-read...

Just finished the Red Wolf Conspiracy which has been on to read for half a year or so...after a period of enforced no unserious reading. Was a decent read but it lacked something vital and was stupidly illogic and predictable at times, while other parts where pure brilliance a strange mix.

Now to find something a bit more demanding...

/Chance...of to struggle through an endless backlogg of books that he should read...

I'm currently reading Ink, by Hal Duncan. Vellum blew me away, despite knowing that I missed 3/4 of the significance of all the prose Duncan included. Ink has definitely been slower than Vellum, but the way Duncan writes it, the boring Harlequin parts are twined around awesome Jack Flash and Guy Fox parts.

Ended up finishing David Williams' 'Burning Skies' (instead of 'Day of the Damned'), follow up to 'Mirrored Heavens' and a tale of hardcore techno-warfare in the 22nd century. The pacing is a bit choppy in places but still well worth a read for fans of military sci-fi. My full review is over Here. Now it's back to 'Day of the Damned'...

Well, I finally finished Nights of Villjamur by Mark Charan Newton - I haven't had much reading time lately. It's enjoyable and Newton's writing is proming, but I found Nights of Villjamur a bit uneven (full review)

Next up is Green by Jay Lake.

Finished Sandersons Warbreaker after a rave review from a trusted source, great entertainment with some really nice characters and twists on the usual cliches. Not heavy weight material but long since I read such a fun book with quite a few interesting references. :)

/Chance...nearly wondering if this warrents a fourth try at reading Mistborn...

I finally caved in and got the first two Dresden books from the library. Dunno why I was avoiding them exactly, but I'd been staring at the books at my local Barnes and Nobles for the last 2 years and never even looked at the things. Anyway, they were pretty good, read them both today (I've got pneumonia). Nothing special, but I hear it improves a bit with the third book so I'll definitely be continuing. I also got Player of Games. Having read four or five Iain M. Banks books over the last couple years I had been hearing about this one as one of his best entry books so I picked it up. I thought it was pretty good, especially toward's the end. On the other hand, I think I prefer the scale of his other novels.

Re: Warbreaker... I thought it was a pretty good book (draft, rather). I've read the Mistborn series, which I thought was great, especially the fantastic magic system. Maybe I should try Elantris sometimes....

Also, I'm trying to start the chronicles of thomas the unbeliever. Unfortunately my mom picked up the second pick instead of the first from the library :/

Finished 'Day of the Damned' this morning. Sven and his crew do what comes naturally to them, blowing stuff up, only this time it's in the middle of a planetary civil war that could have grave repercussions for the Empire. It's not without it's faults but 'Day of the Damned' got me interested in the series all over again after the slightly disappointing 'Maximum Offence'. My full review is over Here. No idea what I'm reading next, plenty to choose from though!

Elantris is in some ways very much like warbreaker but with less humour...

Got Abercrombie's Best Served Cold as a present today a chapter in already...:)

Just finished Mark Billingham's Death Message, excellent! The DI Thorne series are amazing.

Started Simon Kernick's The Business of Dying, so far so good.

Expecting to get my delivery of Abercrombie's Last Argument of Kings next week, I can hardly wait...

Patrick Suskind - Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Wow, I'm loving this book. The prose is great, and the story is good fun. I never got around to seeing the movie but I bought the book a few years ago at a book sale. Been sitting on my shelf ever since. Just decided to pick it up for something to read today. Glad I did!

I saw the movie a little while but haven't read the book. It would probably be better as a book, I think.

Right now I'm re-reading GotM concurrently with A Game of Thrones because I've run out of new books to read on my shelf.

really, you loved Vellum? I read it about a year ago, and it frustrated the hell out of me. I could really see its potential to be an amazing book, but it just never nailed it.

as for me, im reading House of Chains.

Just finished Jonathan Maberry's thought-provoking and balls-to-the-wall Patient Zero. Quite an entertaining read, and I'm not usually into zombies.

Check the blog for the full review. :)

Currently reading Azincourt by Bernard Cornwell. About 100 pages in and so far so good. Cornwell, as usual, knows how to make heroes we believe in and tells us about battles we don't know too much about.

I accidently left Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader -- which I was planning on finishing tonight -- at work today. So I'm starting in early on Karen Traviss' City of Pearl, and so far it's really good; to the point where I'm not quite sure how I'm going to motivate myself to finish the last 70 pages of Dark Lord now...
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch
