Continuing on Macros' recommended series Simon Scarrow's Eagles of the Empire with book 3 WHEN THE EAGLE HUNTS. Only one chapter in, but it's hard not to enjoy these books. Scarrow just really writes compelling books!

If you dig what Cornwell does with Sharpe and Uthred, it's fairly hard not to get sucked into loving Cato and Macro as well

I have decided (well, affirmed, is more like it) that I have a love-hate relationship with Hobb's writing.

I am fascinated by the world-building. The breadcrumbs about Elderings and dragons are awesome.

I absolutely hate the pacing and the over-descriptive prose.

I am largely ambivalent about most of the characters.

As a result, these are books I can only really enjoy by dedicating some time sitting down and reading a hundred or 2 pages at a time (usually in the sun, while sipping on some beverage), and then spend a week or so processing it before diving in for another session. My usual approach of "read at least a chapter a night" doesn't work with these books. I get frustrated with the over-emotionally dumb characters, and the only way I can tolerate this is in marathon sessions- because that way, stuff actually happens

All this is to say, I (finally!) Finished "Mad Ship" .

Before doing into another long-ass read (the 3rd SLA book is next, technically), I've recently realized, I never read my copy of "Kellanved's Reach".

So naturally I'm about 70 pages into that. It took me an embarrassingly long time to remember where the name Orjin came up before.

When I did (3 beers after starting the book, I actually said it out loud, to no one in particular (except the robins circling our backyard, as is their custom).

I believe 2021 will be a year for a full Malaz re-read, from Path of Ascendancy, all the way to Kharkanas.

Finished up Empire of Gold and well, I liked it. Mostly because the real ending after the showy showdown which was a bit too much of a spectacle to be really interesting, especially when the finishing move had been foreshadowed for two books however awesome it was. The actually chapters after that with their character interactions and arcs ending where they did where very nice and are where the author really shines quiet moments with a lot of feelings in them.

Restarted The Light of All that Falls which fell by the wayside some time ago, much more interested in it this time around.

Finished Pirate Freedom by Gene Wolfe after starting it a while ago and putting it down for whatever reason. It was very good. And I realized I still haven't read his latest 2 books and a few older ones and I need to rectify that.

I see Anthony Ryan has created a second series out of the tower lord books.

I am torn. I seem to both remember liking the books and also not liking them. The first book about the training in the monastery was great but I seem to recall not liking how the story progressed after that.

My Dad enjoyed them so he'll be happy about the new series

I have that on my kindle waiting for me too. I have trouble finishing series as I don't want them to end, so I kind of hold off on them. I will be getting to it soon though.

On my end, I'm halfway through WHEN THE EAGLE HUNTS and it's fantastic! I'm liking it even more than the last book.

And I also took some time to dive back into my LeGuin Earthsea Omnibus (Thanks again Macros for pushing me back into that one as well with your posts about it) and finished TOMBS OF ATUAN and REALLY enjoyed it! After I finish the Scarrow book I'll jump into THE FARTHEST SHORE as well. I liked Ged here a lot, and think Tenar was a wonderful addition to the world. LeGuin is bucking to be top on my Classic Fantasy shelf and try to oust Tolkien...she was THAT good.

I'm also devouring INFINITY WARS and HOUSE OF X and POWER OF X on Marvel Unlimited...so that's a nice little side distraction for when I don't feel like reading one of my books.

I started Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler, first in a new series in which he appears to be essentially combining Star Wars and Final Fantasy. Fun start.

I'm also reading Blood Meridian.

Finished The Girl and the Stars, which was great! An absolute hit, like most of Lawrence's books, at least for me. Now onto Harrow the Ninth. I am very excited

Finished up the Light of All that Falls and well it was good but I think both book 2-3 never really get as good as the first one, some of the eventual solutions are a bit too obvious to everyone but the characters involved. Also could probably have benefitted from having one rather crucial side quest having a PoW rather than just appearing.

Started a re-read of A Land Fit for Heroes it should be a nice contrast to my last few reads.

Very much enjoyed the first book of the second series but I enjoyed most of the first one too, the second book of the second series was decent but nothing special.

I finally finished the Wheel of Time. It only took me 1 year, 5 months, and 9 days. I haven't enjoyed listening to it since Book 3, and I'm never reading another book by Brandon Sanderson, but at least I can start listening to a new audiobook series now. I'm debating between starting one of the Riyria sub-series or jumping into Elizabeth Bear's Eternal Sky trilogy.

Does anyone else discover they like an old series and then find old covers they like and start hunting for used copies they can buy even though they have a brand new giant illustrated omnibus?

Just me with the 1977 Bantam EARTHSEA trilogy covers then?
