Finished listening to The Sudden Appearance of Hope and I loved it! Claire North is fast becoming a favourite of mine. I'll definitely check out more of her stuff.
Started listening to IMAJICA on the recommendation of Abyss. It's 37 hours long so it should keep me entertained for a while.

When you're in a patrol car do you ever just switch off the dispatcher and listen to an audiobook all shift?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Really enjoying Esslemont's writing style. He's getting better with his plotting and characterisation too.

I'd agree that he's getting better but I feel like the stories in PTA are very rushed. I didn't like DL and I'm kind of on the fence as to the next one because of it.
Been reading manga again. KonoSuba issue 3.
Debut novel 'Incarnate' now available on Kindle

Just finished MAGIC TRIUMPHS. Decent ending to a good series, with a few minor irritations.
Next I'm jumping headfirst into THE WAR OF THE WOLF. More Uhtred is always welcome in my life.

The Hugo Winners, Vol. 3, covering 1971-1975 (and Leiber's Ship of Shadows, which tied a Sam Delany story in 1970 and which Asimov accidentally omitted from Vol. 2).
There are plenty of stories I've never read (but should have — curse my holey grasp of SF/F history!) from some incredible authors in here!

Almost done with Blood of Elves. It's ok. Not sure if I'm going to get the next book in the near future.

I'm fairly sure someone did a half review of it here recently. Too lazy to check but I'll read it when it's available on used paperback

Back into BLOOD OF ELVES for another try at the rest of the series, for the first tine since I tried it way back in 2016 (at that time having not read SWORD OF DESTINY, which I later picked up in London at Forbidden Planet [Thanks PG!]).
Having now read both LAST WISH and especially SWORD OF DESTINY...
THIS. BOOK. MAKES. SO. MUCH. MORE. SENSE.
How this was ever translated as Book 2 and sold as such in North American for so long is beyond me...the NA publishers should be drug out in the street and beaten with pool noodles for that travesty. SoD is essentially the codex for understanding not only characters in BLOOD, but motivations, and even why everyone is where they are at the start of the story setting-wise.
Anyways, the goal is now to push through the re-read of this, to finally get into the rest of the books in the series, so TIME OF CONTEMPT is on deck afterwards. Also, it will be nice to blitz through the rest to prepare for the Netflix series.

Hmmm, maybe requires further investigation then.
Still won't be getting HB though. I lost faith somewhat after Shards basically

Apparently not YA but reviews are wildly varying. I'll wait till I hear what a few malazans have to say about it

Interesting. I just finished Blood of Elves (only book in the series I've read) as I thought it was book 1. I felt underwhelmed by the end of the book. I kinda rushed the ending (last 30 pages or so). I may have to read Sword of Destiny.
I've moved on to War of the Wolf by Cornwell.

Yes, as Amph noted above, the reading order is SO important with this series. LAST WISH, followed by SWORD OF DESTINY, and then BLOOD and the rest of the series.
I tried BLOOD years ago without having read DESTINY and was lost, and unimpressed...and at the time DESTINY had not even been translated into English (inexplicably) while the rest of the books had.
Anyways, well worth getting LAST WISH and DESTINY as they are both great.

Not sure whether I'll try SWORD... I'm not wholly convinced BLOOD would improve with more backstory (but it certainly can't make it worse). There was still a whole lot of standing around debating something or other, and grimdark navel-gazing, for a book about a dude who stabs magic things for a living.

I think Sapkowski does a really good job of turning the somewhat navel gazing epic style of Arthurian legends into something much messier and more meaningful.
Geralt can slice up pretty much any monster extant, but the things he wishes to do most - protect those he loves and be with them - do not involve dealing with monsters at all. The way Sapkowski shows the drives of almost everyone in a reasonable for them manner is very nice to me. I do think that the "dangers" that Geralt gets into are sometimes not as exciting as they could be, but this comes off as tolerable to me.
And yes, the actual order of the stories is really important and the official translation publication order isn't right.
