Is Bk 2 more military-focused, or is it wide-scope?

I have it sitting on a shelf, but I found the "main" plot to be the most boring part of the book. The PI parts were much better.

Check out Chris Evans. His "Iron Elves" trilo is basically "disgraced commander reforming a uniof misfits with muskets and fighting evil". The writing's so-so but there's some neat ideas. He's got another book out, which is supposedly like fantasy Vietnam War. Haven't had a chance to check that one out yet.

Promise of Blood as in Brian Mcclellan right? Read the trilogy. Really good books. I compare him with Wexler all the time. I think Mcclellan does the fantasy better, while Wexler handles military tactical stuff better.

Temeraire seems familiar. Will have to check that out.

Just finished reading Haroun And The Sea Of Stories, by Salman Rushdie. What a fun book to read! Although it is marketed for children, I reckon people of all ages would enjoy it. So fantastical

Yes tumbled into the Kate Griffin ones (Matthew Swift) after reading the First Fiften Lives of Harry August which was very good, these ones where more average. Will certainly look into more shes written later on.

Reading Claire Norths latest Touch. It's excellent so far. I loved her other Claire North book, the matthew swift books i've read have been ok but not up to the claire north book standards, I'll continue reading them though!

Goblin Emperor is pretty good.

Karen Memery is a tiny bit better.

GE is about a half elf half goblin suddenly thrust into being king of elves by the sudden death of nearly the entire ruling family. It's very focused on him, so if you're liking for a wide, sprawling story, this isn't it. I'm interested in where Addison takes the story after this and she does a great job folding in past history without making it pedantic or distracting from the personal feel to the story.

Karen Memery is about an 1880s era smart "seamstress" in the Terry Pratchett sense who gets wrapped up in a rescue plot that morphs into a steampunk save the United States from evil doers plot. The tone of the book is one pf Memery writing in her journal in a cheap novel that's a bit upscale for the audience that usually gets those books. It took a bit to grow on me, but I do like Elizabeth Bear's style.

Finished LEVIATHAN WAKES. Awesome book, already bought CALIBAN'S WAR. But the Kindle edition robbed a bit of the enjoyment. They tacked a free copy of another Daniel Abraham book on the end. Which thanks very much guys, but it threw me off when LW finished at the 52% mark. I effing hate that.

Understandable but I highly recommend reading that other Abraham book. A really great series.

Finished up Shadows of the New Sun: Stories in Honor of Gene Wolfe last week. Neil Gaiman's story was very Wolfeian. Timothy Zahn and Todd McCaffrey both had fun little fantasy tales. I also really liked those by David Drake and Aaron Allston. There were two stories set in the Book of the New Sun world: Jody Lynn Nye's post-Urth tale was very good; by contrast, William C. Dietz's Shadow/Claw interlude was the worst story in the collection. And of course, there are two original Wolfe stories bookending the others. Overall, a fairly strong collection.

It put me in the mood for more Wolfe, so now I'm reading Pirate Freedom.

I eventually found a book to stem my reading drought.
I crashed out midway through blood and bone a few months ago, and I just haven't had anything to get me back into it.

So I started reading Steelhaven by Richard Ford, not because it was particularly appealing, if anything it looked generic and samey.
But it belongs to a work colleague so I thought I'd get it out the way, and I could give him them back.

So anyway, I devoured it in about 3 days, enjoying it for the most part, and have now started The Shattered Crown.
Anyone got any opinions?

I'm reading the Eddie LaCrosse series by Alex Bledsoe at the moment. I really love the whole fantasy noir - they're basically a cross between a sword-&-shield fantasy and a 1930's/1940's pulp detective novel.

Finished "Range of Ghosts" by Elizabeth Bear. Thought it was pretty good, allowed myself to get sucked in and read it over the weekend. It reminds me of Genghis Khan a lot, with magic. I would read the sequel.
