Sheve and I are starting a Black Company reread in the next day of 2. Anyone care to join?

This might be good for me if I can finish Wind and Truth in the next couple of days - I'm 75% through so it's possible! I have the first 3 books in an omnibus already and I've been meaning to get around to them! Give me a couple of days and I'll do my best to finish my current read.

I don’t have too much time to read anymore so I’ll be slow rolling until I have my shoulder surgery in a eeek or 2.

They may cut your dick in half
And serve it to a pig
And though it hurts, you'll laugh
And dance a dickless jig
And serve it to a pig
And though it hurts, you'll laugh
And dance a dickless jig

Oh I love this. The intense griminess of Beryl is familiar in a Malaz City kind of way. SE had spoken of the influence of The Black Company on him and it shows.

It shows in so many things, the names of the members of The company being a big one.
Takes abit to get used to the style of writing again.
But you are doing a first time read right?

I recently reread book 1 but I'll keep an eye on the chat and will likely join once you get into book 2.

I think I read this once about 15-20 years ago or so.
I am finding it hard to work out how many people are in the company because so many times it's just casually mentioned how many soldiers have just died.

Got to chapter 3 (they're long chapters) Don't read on if you're avoiding spoilers.
Spoilers: they've just done a whole bit in the North ostensibly taking out rebels but really being used as pawns in the games of the "Taken" who seem to be immortal bad guys who all serve the Lady but hate each other. It's a lot of fun tbh though it doesn't endear me to the characters much. Which I guess is the point!

I am loving how the book shows how absolutely devastating low lvl sorcery can be in a fight.
Think this series does that better than anything else I have ever read.

Squad level magic from Malazan is so similar to the Black Company and how Goblin, One-Eye operate.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I like how these long chapters all tell one story within each, and they're all a separate geographic location. Every chapter has a beginning, middle and end. There is a faint sense of building to something but they're almost self contained.

I would join but I just did a reread prior to Lies Weeping - which was excellent! And I was surprised to not see any comments on Lies Weeping considering this is a Malazan forum and Erikson was very influenced by Cook. But maybe I just missed the comments or threads. Can't wait for They Cry in November!
