Hey hey guys and gals long time no see... so its been what.... 4-5 years?

Life kinda took me away from reading for a good while there, it all started with a dead kindle culminating into an unhealthy PS4 obsession (hey, don't judge me)

Anyways, im back to data-mine from you lot once more. Posted Image

Soooo....anything good to read come out in that time?
What "must reads" did i miss?

Hey DK, welcome back. Good to see you and that you're well.

Wow, do you have a fun couple of days ahead of you catching up with the "Reading at t'moment" and "Book I bought today" threads ... ;)

But atm, I've been reading some LitRPG. Finished book 5 of Azarinth Healer and have started Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Simple, direct, no-faffing-about fun, straight out of a TTRPG or even a CRPG.

It was Sombra.

If you haven't read The God is Not Willing that's #1 recommendation. Then the Esselmont stuff that has come out (Path to Ascendancy). I've also done Cradle and Dungeon Crawler Carl in the LitRPG (both good, both build enjoyability quickly, but DCC starts out faster). Both really fun, lightish reads that can get you back in the groove.

For Sci-Fi Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir was really entertaining and a page-turner.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

For me, the most memorable novel from the last couple years was The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, a swashbuckling historical fiction (with a twinge of fantasy) pirate adventure set in the western Indian Ocean.

As for up to date reads I'm not sure aside from the ones already mentioned here - a fair few Malazan books have come out over the past few years and they're all worth checking out.

The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik is one of my favourites of the past few years, and the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch is great (new one came out last month).

I'm also a big fan of the Cradle series by Will Wight.

The Spear Cuts Through Water -- a one-off non-medieval fantasy that does the meta-fiction thing really well (in this case, a kind of storytelling nesting doll) without ever compromising an excellent central narrative.

Not really like Cloud Atlas, from what I remember of that. More that the main story has a framing narrative which has its own framing narrative, and then within the main story there's little asides and vignettes and mini-stories.


It is cool though. My description of the book is imagine Gene Wolfe meets Matthew Stover and you're somewhere in the ballpark, or at least as close as I can make it.
