The one that she's self-publishing or something else?

Nice! Won't have to wait when I'm done with the House War and the Sacred Hunt to jump right into the new one! :)

that's the one.
the blurb i saw tied it back to her original Hunter' duology (y'know, the ones that are technically books 1 and 2, but not really, more like 15 and 16 only prologues, unless you read them between Sun Sword and House War, in which case they are 7 and 8, or between House War and Sun Sword in which case 9 and 10, or at the end in which case my head hurts why can't she just pick an order why gods why.....)

Ordered the paperback version for $32. The hardcover is $93 because she's doing it herself through IngramSpark and that means print in demand and thus much pricier. I can't afford that, but I'm happy with the paperback as it will match the rest of my collection.

I ordered the paperback too, except it was a few bucks cheaper for me. It should be here by Wednesday!

I saw that it's over a 1000 pages long. Given that it's not edited and that her edited novels were still often overwritten and repetitive, I'm wondering how this will affect the overall reading experience.

Need to get back on the House War horse so I can then jump to the duology so I can read this one! :)

It’s edited….what are you on about? There are many “copy editing” posts on patreon.

The copy edit is just for typos, etc.

In every book I've read so far, West talks about how great and invaluable Sheila Gilbert's input has been. It's going to be interesting to see if her absence can be felt West's indie works. As far as I know, the author hasn't hired a pro editor to go through the manuscript.

Is the paperback a trade or mass market?

No, she's got more than one person helping edit these books...she talks about more than typos.

Oh, its a trade paperback, matte coating on the cover, and a TIGHT perfect bound with a fold-crease for opening it...it's about as good a Trade Paperback as you can get quality-wise.

Starting it and realizing that I don't remember where any of the characters or plotlines left off at the end of War.

I figure that West didn't include a "What has gone before" at the beginning of this new one.

Given that it's the culmination of three previous series, some dating from the 90s, that would have been for the best.

To be fair, she's stated in a recent Patreon post that HUNTER'S REDOUBT acting like a late-game entry with so many new characters that it's been written in a way that would welcome readers who hadn't read what came before...so I'm expecting a sort of immersive "This is what came before" inside the text being espoused by characters? That's how it read to me anyways. I won't know till I get there.

About 300 pages into Firstborn and it's the best House War book thus far. You can truly feel that the end is nigh, so the shortcomings that plagued the previous installments have so far been mostly absent.

Looking forward to see if West can end this one on the same kind of high note she managed for the Sun Sword series. :)

I enjoyed House Name quite a bit. Going from that to Broken Crown and the very 1997 writing is a bit of a stumble, but I will endeavor onward.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.
