2020 MALAZAN RE-READ: ORB, SCEPTRE, THRONE

Book description for Orb, Sceptre, Throne.

Quote

Darujhistan, city of dreams, city of blue flames, is peaceful at last; its citizens free to return to politicking, bickering, trading and, above all, enjoying the good things in life. Yet there are those who will not allow the past to remain buried. A scholar digging in the plains stumbles across an ancient sealed vault. The merchant Humble Measure schemes to drive out the remaining Malazan invaders. And the surviving agents of a long-lost power are stirring, for they sense change and so, opportunity. While, as ever at the center of everything, a thief in a red waistcoat and of rotund proportions walks the streets, juggling in one hand custard pastries, and in the other the fate of the city itself.

Far to the south, fragments of the titanic Moon's Spawn have crashed into the Rivan Sea creating a series of isles…and a fortune hunter's dream. A Malazan veteran calling himself 'Red' ventures out to try his luck—and perhaps say goodbye to old friends. But there he finds far more than he'd bargained for as the rush to claim the Spawn's treasures descends into a mad scramble of chaos and bloodshed. For powers from across the world have gathered here, searching for the legendary Throne of Night. The impact of these events are far reaching, it seems. On an unremarkable island off the coast of Genabackis, a people who had turned their backs upon all such strivings now lift their masked faces towards the mainland and recall the ancient prophesy of a return.

And what about the ex-Claw of the Malazan Empire who now walks the uttermost edge of creation? His mission—the success or failure of which the Queen of Dreams saw long ago—is destined to shape far more than anyone could have ever imagined.

January 1st 2020 we began the re-read of the main series of the Malazan books. The plan being to read one book a month. We've now added additional Erikson and Esslemont publications to the schedule, to be read roughly according to the publication order.

November 1st we begin the re-read of Orb, Sceptre, Throne, the 4th Novel of Eslemont's Malazan Empire series.

There will be spoilers for all published books. So beware. Spoiler blocks are not mandatory but if people want to use boxes for the latest Kharkanas books or the Path to Ascendance books for example, I'd personally appreciate it.

Are you ready? What do you remember about Orb, Sceptre, Throne?

I remember being weary of Esslemont's story telling at this point but very excited to see the culmination of this return of "The Tyrant" story seed that was planted in Bonehunters, when the Undead Soldier Seguleh blew open our understanding of Darujistan's history.

The first quarter of the book, with the creepy, very gothic telling, of the uncovering of the mask and its power was fascinating. The power that took the field, an army of Seguleh, scary City Mages travelling the continent, that stuff was cool. The ending on the other hand was very disappointing. I feel like, this was the one book, where the authors should have had the balls to demonstrate the terrible consequences of ascendants and gods facing off. Darujistan should have been blown up by the Moranth or Brood should have brought the hammer down to kill the Tyrant. 10+ books of world building and story telling should have born fruit in killing that city and putting the rest of the wars in context.

I didn’t appreciate OST as much the first time around. It’s a much better read when it immediately follows TtH. Anyway, enjoying it so far.

Started. I think I've only read this book the once so this should be quite fresh for me. So skipper the helpful synopsis above from Apt and the book cover to dive in.

First observation is that Vorcan is now head of House Nom?!

I'd forgotten about all the Seguleh the dramatis persona implies

Starting this now. Same with Cyphon — I think I've read this, but I don't remember anything about it. We'll see if anything tolls a bell as I (re?)read.

Big bad has arrived and seems like he's got strings attached to everyone. Monrath bugging out like rats from a ship.

Well it would seem that Orchid is of Andriy heritage, perhaps ala Bluerose. Its quite a tropy group exploring the spawns, I wonder what CAM might do with them.

Kruppe's slipping in and out of the narrative is well done.

The Seguleh arriving is going to be immense.

I wonder how the Tyrant is influencing/controlling the legate.

Onto Chapter 8.

I dont think Cam quite captures Scillara, she's more two dimensional in this telling.

Envy has been much more of a bitch in this book. I didnt think she was too bad in the main series but here she comes across much more damagingly self centred. I assume Thurule might join Vorcan's lot.

The spawns a shit show. Can't tell if Antsy is deluding himself or his motivation for going down there makes no sense. Presumably they're going to find the firsts mask and that will act as a moral counterpoint for the seguleh depending on who picks up. The tragedy suggests maybe traveller gets it somehow?

Anyway enjoying it if a bit jarring in places. Nearly Onto Chapter 9. When I'm reading in the middle of the night with the kobo app as i settle the baby it misses the end of chapters, its bloody annoying.

Well that's traveller on his way. That confluence might come out should the spawns activity be earlier in the timeline. Kruls Bar lot are quite quiet on his absence.

I'm guessing Barathol made something with the shards of dragonipur to imprison the Tyrant.

Have to say that all these separate plotlines coming together feels a bit clunky. Its unfair to compare to SE but it doesn't feel as forced in the other books.

Cam writes the horror so well, but the sweeping ambition feels like an ask too much at this point in his writing career.

Clearly the end game set to be nuclear explosion levels... but lots of good guys seem to be aiming to avoid that...

Finished. I think the ending was a tad bit disappointing.

I think Barathol crafted the arrowheads, maybe i missed it but it wasn't clear. Will check the ded forum.

Called Traveller as first.

I suspect lots of little things I missed as clearly first read. Was there a cameo by Mother Dark?

Draconus scaring the shit out of Envy was fun. Quite different from the depiction in FoD though... and be did nothing else and wasn't foreshadowed so felt a bit left field.

Not my favourite of cam's so far, think that has to go to NoK or Return so far.

Were all the threads tied up from this boom? I think so.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

I looked forward to this book so much and it was very good, but I'd rather Erikson wrote it. Can't complain too much though, one of the better Novels of the Malazan Empire.

Even after a full book about the Segullah I was still left wanting more Segullah.

Haven't actually read it this time around but what I do remember being sorta meh about was.... after the air raid on te Segullah army the reaction of the opposing army.... why was bombs from above anymore shocking than a High Mage totally wiping out an army?
