I'm hopeful one day he'll go all in and write a Malazan level SF series.... multiple characters and povs, millenia of timelines, someone has sex with a spidermorph, the whole thing.

My loose understanding is that while REJOICE didn't fly off the shelves, the WILLFUL CHILD books have done just fine. I'm stretching the analogy, but if REJOICE is to the KT what CHILD is to the MBF, the money would be there.

Am I the only one who wants a Late Imperial period Malazan series at some point too? The fall of the Empire, you know?

There's that one chapter plate in HoC that speaks on Grubb as First Sword of the Late Empire...and I'm like "Oh man, tell me that story too!"

I see a slight problem with half of that cast.

Para todos todo, para nosotros nada.

MottI'd always pegged you as more of an Ublala

Another short essay from Erikson, this time describing the process of writing the book's first chapter. It includes the text of the chapter's opening scene starring Prazek and Dathenar.

Oh dear, sounds like I won't like Walk in Shadow. I haven't read Fall of light but my takeaway from this write up is that he's sticking to his formula, which is all well and good. It's just not a story that matches the myths I built in my mind during the early books.

By 'style' I think he's primarily referring to the prose style (Shakespearean influence, declamatory/oratorical, 'breath-phrase' organization, language a bit antiquated, bit like an 'epic poem' etc.) and scope/focus (inward rather than expansive), not high fantasy/low fantasy. I'd expect it to swerve towards high fantasy / epic myth at some point (hopefully...)....

Erikson has a line in TBH that is relevant to much of this thread:

Quote

Yet the truth of things was never as interesting as the mystery preceding the revelation, and Banaschar had come to appreciate his own ignorance.

See the wisdom I extrapolate from that quote is that authors should never do prequels.

Erikson has an interesting quote about WiS in the latest NOT A TSACAST podcast:

Quote

Walk in Shadow is a lot more action-filled because it's the consequence of the first two books. The pace should be up a fair bit.

The WiS talk begins around 43 minutes into the podcast.

Well, I'm one of the sixty three fans he mentions and look forward to the book.

Am I the only one who feels there is a big gap in knowledge which WiS should have filled in many years ago ?
The way I see it, the Kharkanas series is the whole foundation for the events in MBD. I'm on my second read-through of MBD, and this time I started with FoD and FoL (and the PtA series). So glad I did, it has helped enormously with my understanding of just about everything, except Shadow.

Sorry....should have been Malazan Book of the Fallen. Got it mixed up with The Tibetan Book of The Dead, which is something else entirely.. ;-)
