I've always considered myself a good reader, not fast but a steady pace.

But I'm always astounded when I start a Kindle book and I see Amazon suggests that a 300+ page book takes around 6 hours to read. That's fifty pages an hour, which seems mind boggling to me. Surely this isn't the average Kindle reader speed? I usually average 30 pages an hour with your average kind of litterature.

I just tried out a random internet test and got around 200 words per minute at around 80 something comprehension, which is apparently good.

Surely it depends on the book and how engaged you are by it? Not to mention what is going on in your life as well? Last time I did a Dresden reread I flew through the entire series extremely quickly because I had time, I'd read them before, they are particularly difficult books anyway and I was really into them.

I couldn't read at the same pace now I'm in a very different stage of life - more stressful and tiring job, I now have a kid etc. Also I couldn't have read a heavier book at the same rate either I don't think.

Hence why I say average.

If I'm reading something light, like a children's book, I can easily read 50 pages an hour, if it's University level material, maybe something old and stuffy I might read as slowly as 10-20 pages an hour but your typical main stream fiction I average 30 pages.

My Kindle time ALWAYS goes up after I start the book, meaning that I read more slowly than average. I don't have time to take the test right now, but I'm probably somewhere just above a BK.

I have always considered my self a fast reader. Like TS life has limited the amount of time that I have to read. Anyway 1038 on my phone. 80% comprehension. Like anyone I imagine there is a different speed when reading for pleasure where the story envelopes you and reading for work or school. Technical books take me much longer mainly because I am trying out the formulas as I go.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

I tend to average about 100 pages per hour. Goes way up if I'm reading a lighter book or something I've read before, way down if I'm reading Gene Wolfe, but it's around there.

I always get a lower score on these tests than that would indicate though, perhaps coz I'm trying to read word-by-word to start which is not how I read normally and doesn't improve my comprehension unless it's a really fact-heavy piece of work, so yeah.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Perhaps consider the following alternative questions.

How much do you comprehend
How much do you remember
How much do you use

I don't bother doing the speed tests, because (for me) I alter my reading when doing something for a test situation.

It varies wildly, a reread of a popcorn fare will be massively quicker that s first go at something really heavy and dense. I'd still say I'm a fair bit quicker than average, kobo/Kindle reading times always drop quickly for me and my read time is pretty much never near as long the projected times.

Also Apt you're reading mostly (I assume) in your second language,

My reading speed had declined rapidly in the last few years. It's worrisome.

My reading speed is proportional to how engaged I am in what I am reading. So the test is probably skewed a bit. 191 WPM, 91% comprehension.
