To be fair, I imagine quite a few people will have outgrown their wardrobe during the lockdown.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

'"The bodies came, one after another, after another, after another. So many bodies that the ambulances and trucks carrying them into the crematorium blocked traffic.

[...]

In his 30 years helping to cremate the dead, [...] he had never imagined such scenes. "So many dead," he said. "It feels like if this continues, there will be no one left in Delhi."

[...]

[...] the air was pungent and sour, thick with the smoke of thousands of recent cremations. The smoky pyres of the day before were still scattered with some offerings, mangoes and pomegranates and bright orange holy flowers that lie in the ash; specks of life in the remnants of death. And there was grief – grief everywhere.

[...]

"I feel like everything has been destroyed and a hole has been torn in my heart," said Gupta, who, like many, turned his ire towards the government of prime minister Narendra Modi. "The central government should be blamed" [...]

[...] Modi has suffered an unprecedented six-point drop in popularity in the past week, with his approval rating at its lowest ever – though still high at 67% – and his disapproval rating going up to 28%.

[...]

Though the Delhi state chief minister[...] said authorities would make vaccines available "as soon as possible", several private clinics in Delhi said they were not expecting stocks for at least another month or even two.'

https://www.theguard...hi-crematoriums

'being in India right now means constantly asking yourself: When will I get COVID? "It's like a circle that's closing in," [...] "You hear of a distant contact, you hear your neighbor has COVID, you hear a friend's parent has COVID, friend's parent has died, grandparent has died, my father's colleague has died, stuff like that. It comes closer and closer to you and you wonder how long will you remain unscathed?"

[...]

[...] while India's leaders were celebrating manufacturing those vaccines, they weren't doing much to convince people to get vaccinated. So far, only 9 percent of India's population has gotten a shot. Only 1.7 percent is fully vaccinated[...]

[...] the way regulatory approvals were granted to these two vaccines, it seemed quite rushed, only because we wanted to make in India a national vaccine as soon as possible. [...] worry that scientific rigor has been compromised, just to show that we have these two made-in-India vaccines [...]

[...] A minister spoke about how religion has a place above COVID-19, and if you have faith, then COVID-19 can do nothing to you. These are government officials saying all of this.

[...] this has been the trend—to not listen to subject area experts, the scientists. Their advice has clearly not been taken into account from the very beginning. Scientists already knew that cases are on the rise and predicted that something like this is on the horizon. So honestly I cannot understand, I cannot fathom what stopped them from meeting and planning for this.

[...] They're very wary of the international coverage that India is getting, instead of trying to actually focus our energy on fixing things. The efforts have been to clamp down on real narratives from the ground and reporting, and instead pretend that everything's all right and everything's good. [... The government is] curbing testing, asking private labs to stop testing, [...] if there are no tests, then obviously numbers are going to go down.

[...] don't even know where to begin talking about how fudged that data is. [...] in this whole chaos, how are they even keeping account at all of what's happening, when there are no tests? So, yeah, we have no idea of how many people have actually died of COVID.'

https://slate.com/ne...ment-trump.html

'Jyot Jeet has pledged to care for all the dead as if they were his own family, performing traditional if abbreviated funeral rites at a makeshift crematorium

[...]

"Day in and day out, we are surrounded by the smell of burning flesh, and the sounds of crying families,"'

https://www.nbcnews....deaths-n1265592

'Scenes of mass death are now unavoidable [...] Social media is filled with images of body bags and urgent requests for medical aid. Indians gasping for breath are being turned away from overwhelmed hospitals, sometimes simply because they don't have lab reports confirming COVID-19 infection.

[...]

Health workers plead for basic supplies. [...] "At least give us some masks and gloves. Is there no value to our lives?"

[...]

Rather than intensifying public-health messaging and ramping up interventions like banning mass gatherings and encouraging mask wearing, Modi and his officials did the opposite. They held mass rallies ahead of elections and promoted the Kumbh Mela, a Hindu pilgrimage that drew millions of worshippers to a single town—an event Jha predicts will end up "one of the biggest superspreader events in the history of humanity." On April 17, after India had overtaken Brazil to become the second worst-hit country in the world, Modi told a rally in West Bengal that he was "elated" to see such a large crowd.

[...] the government was keen to wield its heft as the "pharmacy of the world," exporting doses even as it vaccinated only 0.2% of its population per day. "The complete policy complacency created a scenario where we allowed COVID-19 to get the better of us," [...]

[...] With limited vaccine supply, the most effective way to reduce transmission may be to target hot-spot areas and higher-risk people—which means India needs better data, fast.

[...] "Without data—on who is testing positive, where the hot spots of cases and deaths are, who is really vulnerable—there's no easy way for India to walk out of the pandemic," [...]

[...] "Those who died will never come back," the Chief Minister of Haryana said [...] "There is no point debating if the number of deaths is actually more or less."'

https://time.com/596...vid-19-failure/

'The more the virus spreads, the more chances it has to mutate and create variants that could eventually resist current vaccines, threatening to undermine other countries' progress in containing the pandemic, experts warn.

"If we don't help in India, I worry about an explosion of cases' around the world" [...]

[...]

Western countries have been criticized for vaccine stockpiling, but [...] British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the UK didn't have any spare vaccines to send.

[...] Biden [...] confirmed the US intends to send coronavirus vaccines to India. [...] Delivering them could take months, the White House warned.

[...]

India's Covid outbreak is a global problem that needs a coordinated response. [...] If the Indian outbreak can't be contained and spreads to neighboring countries with low vaccine supplies and weak health systems, experts warn the world risks replicating scenes witnessed in India—especially if newer, potentially more contagious variants are allowed to take hold.'

Meanwhile:

'The Hot-Person Vaccine

[...] the vaccinated are changing their usernames to reflect their new personal identities: There are Pfizer Princesses and Pfizer Floozies and Pfizer Pfairies and at least one Portrait of a Lady on Pfizer. [...]

Pfizer did report a 95 percent efficacy rate for its vaccine in clinical trials, versus 94 percent for Moderna, and people do have to wait only three weeks for Pfizer's second dose, instead of four for Moderna's, but neither of those facts explains the pure drama and nonsense of a statement like "[One of my cousins got Moderna, and I was like, 'That's OK.] We need a strong middle class.[']" On TikTok, hundreds of videos use a soundtrack of a woman explaining—slowly, voice full of disdain, like the rudest preschool teacher on Earth—"Only hot people get the Pfizer vaccine." In another clip, a young pharmacy technician tells the viewer that one of the side effects of the Pfizer shot is "feeling like a bad bitch." [...] It follows that anyone who gets the other mRNA vaccine, comparable in almost every way, is, as one woman puts it, a "peasant."

[...] the general consensus is that Pfizer is elite; the general consensus is that Pfizer's elitism is funny.

"Of course it's tongue-in-cheek," [...] the author of an upcoming book about TikTok culture, told me. "No one thinks that the Pfizer vaccine makes you hot or that only hot people get it."

[...] my college friends still changed the name of our iMessage group chat to "Pfizer Gang." [...] he was hoping to get "the bougiest vaccine" and nothing less, and that "Pfizer just sounds expensive," it didn't seem like he was totally joking. When I messaged him on Instagram, he said the silent P gave the word Pfizer a luxurious feel, reminiscent of the silent H in Hermès.

[...] linguist who develops brand names[...] Many high-end fashion brands are named after people, like Pfizer (Fendi, Prada, Kenzo), and many are two syllables, like Pfizer (Fendi, Prada, Kenzo). Second, he said, Pfizer is a "cool word" because of the F and Z sounds, which are what linguists call "fricatives." Fricatives "are really fast-sounding," which is why you might want to include them in the names of cars, or drugs that are marketed as fast-acting—or vaccines that don't require you to wait a full month between doses.

Moderna, meanwhile, has a lot of sounds called "stops"—the M, the D, the N—which make the word seem "slow and plodding," Shore told me. It's also very literal, like a budget brand would be. "Do you really have to call yourself modern if you're selling pharmaceuticals that are in fact based on cutting-edge technologies?" he asked. "No, you'd be more cool about it."

[...] What about my personal theory of the hot-people vaccine, which is that young people prefer Pfizer because of their familiarity with the 2010 movie Love and Other Drugs, in which Jake Gyllenhaal plays a Pfizer sales rep at the height of the 1990s Viagra craze (and does a lot of kissing!)? "Pfizer is a better-known brand, to be sure," Shore acknowledged, and "Viagra is one of the best-known drugs of all time." But as far as the movie goes, and Jake Gyllenhaal's role specifically, "That's giving that movie and Jake Gyllenhaal a lot of credit." [...]

[...]

Pfizer elitism seems to have originated on TikTok, where the vaccine hierarchy has been most concretely outlined. [...] so I reached out to [...] a TikTok scholar [...] and professor [...] The idea of a rich-hot-bougie-elite-status vaccine comes out of American culture, she said, in which everything is extremely competitive and organized around "winners and losers rather than support and kindness." [...]

[...] One video in my feed, soundtracked by Nicki Minaj rapping about a "bum-ass" person who can't afford their rent, posited that there is no rivalry between Moderna and Pfizer—rather, "it's us vs. Johnson & Johnson." There is some truth, or perceived truth, to this formulation—not just because of the clear differences between the mRNA vaccines and other options, but also because these vaccines have been distributed to different people. The CDC reported last week that many public-health departments have been using Johnson & Johnson specifically for homeless people, as well as those who are homebound or incarcerated. Meanwhile, public-health leaders have struggled to avoid portraying the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is also targeted to rural and migrant populations, as a second-class option.

Another vaccine-culture TikTok that went viral paired each brand with its equivalent cellphone—the iPhone for Pfizer, a recent-looking Android model for Moderna, an early 2010s pay-as-you-go Firefly phone for Johnson & Johnson, and a truly ancient Nokia for AstraZeneca. [...] "Classism is disgusting," one responded. "Not westerners fighting over which vaccine is best," another wrote with a sobbing emoji.'

People under 65 saying they're 'better' because they got Pfizer instead of Moderna based on the initially reported 95% vs 94% efficacy rates may not have noticed that Pfizer's efficacy rate for ages 16-64 was 95.1% but Moderna's for 18-64 was 95.6%.

I'm not sure if there are better platforms (let me know, please), but GiveIndia has quite a few opportunities to give here: https://covid.giveindia.org/
As far as I've read, they do vet all the groups that do fundraising through them and have a 0% platform fee for COVID-focused ones. At the very least, it's an easier way to find and give to multiple facets of this crisis.

They came with white hands and left with red hands.

The nightly news rarely has one of those segments where I have to turn the channel because it is too much to take. Last night was one. The coverage coming out of India is heart breaking. India needs the world's help.

I've got my first dose on Sunday. Mr PigDog had his yesterday. I woke in the night thinking he was having a fit, he was shivering so hard. He's been completely wiped out today. So I'm looking forward to Monday.

I've been so busy at work I haven't seen anything of India. I do think it's immoral the way vaccines are being distributed globally though. I shouldn't really be dosed up before a granny in India or Brazil.

'Tucker Carlson Is Telling His Viewers the COVID Vaccine Is a Death Trap

Tucker Carlson told millions of people the government may be concealing the true risks of the COVID-19 vaccines and even implied the vaccines were directly responsible for thousands of deaths.

[...]

Carlson is arguably the most influential media personality in the country, topping cable news show ratings[...] a Limbaugh-like influence in the new Republican Party, whose base has proven to be much more unwilling to get the vaccine than the national average, posing a significant challenge to efforts to attain herd immunity against the coronavirus through vaccination.

[...] Whereas 203 people died after receiving the flu vaccine in 2019, Carlson said, more than 3,000 people have died since December after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S. [...]

[...] high-risk populations such as the elderly were granted access to the vaccine first, "the same people whose risk of dying was actually just kinda high at baseline."

[...] "Your nightly lying and spreading of disinformation is responsible for more deaths than you attribute to the vaccine," Spencer said in a message to Carlson.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta[...] echoed that sentiment [...], calling Carlson's segment "so reckless, so dangerous what he's doing… I can't tell with him, whether if he's just so smart or so dumb."'

https://www.vice.com...i-vaxx-fox-news

'COVID Herd Immunity in the US Is Never Going to Happen Now

Public health experts in the U.S. now believe that despite a massive scaling up of COVID-19 vaccinations, the coronavirus likely won't be eradicated anytime soon—and ongoing vaccine hesitancy is a major factor.

Experts now believe to achieve herd immunity—or enough of the population being protected from the virus, either through vaccination or infections, that the virus dies out—around 80 percent of people will need to be vaccinated[...] This is up from earlier estimates as low as 60 percent, because COVID-19 has proven capable of mutating into more transmissible variants.

[...] polls over the past few months have shown that anywhere from 20 percent to a quarter to nearly a third of Americans have said they won't get the vaccine.

35 percent of Republican men said in a recent Kaiser poll that they wouldn't receive the vaccine. '

https://www.vice.com...g-to-happen-now

'The Constitution Requires the U.S. to Offer Vaccine Passports

Under the U.S. Constitution, the government may not tread on fundamental rights unless the policy is "the least restrictive means" to achieve a "compelling" government interest. Even some rights considered nonfundamental may not be infringed without a rational or non-arbitrary reason.
[...] Imagine a fully vaccinated person whose livelihood is in jeopardy from ongoing travel or business restrictions. She might go to court and argue: "I present little or no danger to the public. So restricting my freedoms and preventing me from contributing to society and the economy isn't rational, let alone the least restrictive means of protecting the public. Since you're not lifting restrictions for everyone, the Constitution requires that I be exempt."

[...]

[...] Throughout the world, vaccine hesitancy is a barrier to achieving herd immunity. [...] By offering an additional "carrot" of expanded privileges and freedoms, vaccine passports would nudge at least some to overcome their hesitancy, protecting many additional people from the virus.'

'EU pushes back on Biden plan to waive coronavirus vaccine patents

Biden may have set Europe on its heels with his surprise proposal to suspend intellectual property rights[...] top EU officials are [...] saying [...] waiving patents would not help with the immediate, urgent need to increase production.

[...]

Macron was even more pointed in calling on the U.S. and the U.K. first to take more important steps: ending de facto bans on vaccine exports; sharing technology needed to ramp up production; and donating existing doses.

"The Anglo-Saxons must first stop their export bans," Macron said [...]

"If we want to work quickly, today there isn't one factory in the world that can't produce doses for poor countries because of intellectual property," [...]

[...] Merkel [...] warned [...] that a patent waiver could do more to benefit a geopolitical rival like China, which has production capacity to make use of Western mRNA technology, than it would to help needy countries in Africa obtain vaccines.

[...]

The criticism of Biden marked an escalation in the contest for supremacy in vaccine diplomacy — a geopolitical battle in which China, Russia and the U.K. are also fully engaged. [...]

[...] India is a pharmaceutical manufacturing powerhouse and perhaps the country best positioned to capitalize on Biden's plan.

[...] the competition for influence extends beyond India. [...]

"As Europeans, we don't need to be schooled. The U.S. hasn't exported a single vaccine in the past six months. Europe is the one that's been producing for itself and the rest of the world these past six months."'

'I can't forget the desperate sound of people trying to breathe

[...] Every day starts for me at 6am. Today, it was with a call from someone desperately searching for a bed for their loved one. I had to turn them away as we simply don't have any beds available. I feel helpless knowing all I can do is refer them to another hospital where they also won't have any beds.

[...] young and old, men and women, those with and without comorbidities gasping for breath.

[...] A surgeon dreams of conducting beautiful, successful surgeries[...] Never in my wildest imagination did I think I would be dealing with a virus so small that I can't dissect it with a scalpel. [...]

[...] That sound - the sound of people trying so desperately to breathe - I would hear it in my sleep.'

'Indians Run for the Exits, Taking COVID Risks With Them

[...]

Private jets, often used primarily by Bollywood glitterati and business moguls who left weeks ago, are now being booked by the middle class who are spending their life savings to save their lives.

"[...] anyone who can put together the resources and the means to pool in money for a private jet, or to pool in money just to get out of the country, getting out."

[...] Thousands of migrant workers escaping the country have now turned neighboring Nepal into the next hell. Some experts predict that the situation could be even worse than in India and the country's prime minister, K.P. Sharma Oli[...] has been widely criticized for mishandling the pandemic response.

The capital city of Kathmandu is now under strict lockdown, but fears are growing that the border city of Nepalgunj, where thousands of migrant workers from India have returned, could explode with cases. That city has just a dozen intensive-care beds and because most of its medical supplies come from India, it could face shortages soon.

[...] Nepal's positivity rate is inching closer to 50 percent of all those tested, in what is starting to feel like déjà vu as the country tracks almost exactly the same trajectory India did two weeks ago. But because of an even more unprepared healthcare system—with 0.7 doctors per 100,000 people, fewer than almost anywhere in the world—many experts worry that Nepal's crisis could be even deadlier than India's. [...]

Many Nepali citizens, including its former king and queen, contracted the virus when they attended the Kumbh Mela religious festival, taking a dip in the Ganges alongside thousands of others. Nepal's own religious festival was allowed to go forward in early April, despite an uptick in cases and the crisis in next-door India. Many blame the prime minister for appeasing voters' wishes instead of protecting them.'

'Covid third wave inevitable in India, say health experts

New variants are contributing factor behind country's vicious second wave with likelihood of more emerging

[...]

"Early evidence from laboratory testing that I saw last week suggests that this B1617 variant is even less susceptible to vaccine neutralisation than the South African variant," [...]

The South African Covid-19 variant has already been found to reduce the efficacy of some vaccines from 95% to just around 50%.

[...]

The WHO said recently that the Indian variant had been detected in 17 countries. Fears over its spread have led to multiple countries, including the UK, Australia and Sri Lanka'
