Just read the gyms are going to be closed until August in Denmark. Mah GAINS!
I've been trying to exercise at home with dumbbels and a small EZ-bar but it's just not the same.
I NEED TO LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS!

The #1 book on Amazon (US) right now is conspiracy theory nonsense. 'Mikovits, a former chronic fatigue researcher who claims the federal government is behind a "plague of corruption" to inflate profits from a potential vaccine even as COVID-19 threatens lives.' (Featured in a viral video recently taken down by YouTube: 'The Plandemic')

Economic production could (temporarily) be saved if people use money that would have gone towards transportation, etc. to buy at-home temporary replacements and supplies for future possible crises (getting more free weights or some sort of compact or foldable machine might not be as good as a gym, or the gym's communal approach to equipment, but will prepare you for any future crisis that might prevent you from going to the gym---including minor personal crises... unless the weights you lift are so heavy they'd cause your floor to collapse).
Same goes for institutions and infrastructure: construction workers are already accustomed to wearing safety equipment. Now would be a great time for government stimulus to invest in expanding the library's storage space, making digital copies of the collection available (in whatever ways are legally manageable), and making other improvements.
Missed another local incident:
'a gun-waving SUV driver crashed a parade of first responders honoring the staff at Mercy Fitzgerald Medical Center Tuesday night, according to 6ABC in Philadelphia.
[...] the male suspect threatened to hurt people while waving the gun.
The resulting police chase of the suspect in the SUV came crashing to an end when the male driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled it over at Main Street and MacDade Boulevard in Darby.'

Well, this pandemic is teaching me new things. There was a discussion on a comedy podcast I was listening to that mentioned that the obsession with washing hands has been a boon to a particular type of fetish - those who like to wash their hands while wearing long sleeve shirts (preferably an expensive dress shirt) and getting the cuffs and their lower shirt arm wet.

Ugh. Washing your hands when using a public washroom while wearing a jacket is true misery.

Another idiosyncrasy is gaining momentum as we hit graduating season full stride - Graduating seniors are not being referred as the "Class of 2020" or "Class of '20". Instead they are being called the "Class of COVID-19".

I've been sitting and looking at the official reports from the ministry of health on infection rates. Last one was late April two weeks after we did a partial reopening for certain small businesses and other low risk sectors. Back then the infection rate jumped to just under R1. Now we're opening a lot of the country tomorrow and I can't help thinking in two weeks we're going to be almost back at square one and they can't close the country down again because people will go crazy.
I guess it's always something that in the mean time we've got more sanitizer, face masks, plexiglass, etc. And more knowledge. I just don't think it'll work.
Edit: Oh and now I can see they just reduced the recommended distance between people in public or at work from 2 meters to 1 meter. Because 2 meters is too hard to control and implement. That's just great.

I'm seeing a silver lining in being one of the more fucked countries in Europe. We have to stay mostly at home for a few more weeks either way but we get to see what works elsewhere for when we are ready. I have a feeling that what works will be "Not much". Depends how many people go back to work tomorrow here I suppose. Not sure what we are supposed to do with the latest advice from Boris. We're staying put.
I think economies and public sentiment will be at a point where governments can get away with a higher death rate soon. Not UK / Spain / Italy level but higher than Germany and Denmark have had so far. We may find the countries with more people exposed can recover faster in some ways. Or not. God knows really.
I still don't know anyone who has had it. Or know anyone who knows anyone directly who has had it. My mum has heard of a few people where she lives but they aren't proper acquaintances.
Cause - I read an article saying that SA was a rare success story because they locked down and then deployed thousands of public health teams to track down hotspots. Is this true or premature?

South Africa is gonna be interesting in the next few weeks. Government instituted a very strict lockdown, stricter than nearly any other country I know off. No leaving the house except for groceries. No restaurants, no takeout, no deliveries. No alcohol, no cigarette sales. The number of new cases were small and the total number of cases were small. Government came up with a plan to open up in stages based on the Humber of new cases they are seeing. Stage 5 total lockdown, stage 1 back to normal. Every type of work depending on its need can open up at stage 4, 3 or 2.
That said they are now seeing the biggest spikes in cases since it started and part of the reason they opening up is because SA can’t afford the economic damage. Already the national carrier always unprofitable looks like it’s dead. Also the strict lockdown may backfire in that many people are now desperate to do anything to end it. People apparently can’t survive living with themselves in their own homes for a month.
As for the medical teams I can say confidently that SA doesn’t have the testing numbers it needs. It’s worked till now because the numbers were small around 3000 cases. Also SA as is typical gave Cuba millions of dollars to get Cuban doctors even though we have hundreds of unemployed doctors and biochemists of our own dyne Cuban doctors come with serious political baggage and even supposedly engage in espionage.
So I have to say SA handled this much better than I thought they would. I didn’t want to fly back home because I thought I’d be safer in Ny than SA. That seems to have been incorrect. However whether SA can stay on top of things I can’t say.

As our work is across the water I'll be sitting tight for another few weeks.

As some states 're-open', and their new infection number spikes up, midwestern states that closed before they got many re-infections are going to have to start grappling with this. It's going to be ugly because they've been closed for a while already.

My neck of the woods is not untouched by the anti-lockdown (AKA an excuse for the Alt-Right to congregate and protest) protests...luckily our local angry loud puppet 'Ed the Sock' had a go at them.
and Part 2
Please note the presence of the one guy who claims he's not racist...who is in fact a well known local racist named Ron Banerjee (he's an absolute pillock)
I think my fave bit is in the second video when the one country fried hick tells Ed he used to think he was cool, but now thinks he's a liberal cuck....and then proceeds to walk away when Ed challenges him to stand his ground and say that shit. Cowards are the funniest shit, especially alt-right loser cowards.
Anyways, probably the funniest shit is how few of them there are. There was like 60 of them TOPS.

14 Days on the Covid Ward in Sunnybrook Hospital.
All the "ReOpen" people and the "This is fake/overbrlown" people need to read the accounts of the doctors actually on the wards...it's a visceral look at what's really going on with this virus.

They wouldn't care/call it fake news/accuse the doctors of being on the take. You can't actually reason with these idiots.

Sadly accurate.
As I probably noted earlier in the thread, my best friends wife is a Respiratory Therapist (AKA the frontest of the front line on this virus), and she's deadly serious about how bad this can be...but she sees some of the idiots out there and cannot believe that they are pandering conspiracy theories and disbelieving the stories. Hell, just the gear she has to wear (seen pics) is like some sort of full hazmat getup and she's tirelessly working 12hr shifts. It's insane that the people fighting this so hard are the ones who would not be believed. How far have some people fallen to believe conspiracies over real stories by those experiencing it firsthand.
