at the moment wearing a neoprene valved mask, with a 2.5 filter thingy. its marginally better than a medical mask. waiting for my cycling mask to arrive from china. Apparently they're surprisingly effective. washable with replaceable filters. look pretty nifty too

I have a activated carbon half mask ( think round vader mask ) and goggles ready for if i feel they end lock down too early.

My heartfelt sympathy to everybody in the USA, having Trump and his administration in charge is the worst thing that happened with the pandemic. Bad luck bros...and sisters

However, we got BoJo...after a thoroughly shaky start, he is shaping up quite nicely.

Be safe, stay safe.

I actually think the valves masks are a problem in that the masks at this point are primarily to prevent you coughing brothers on others, the valve means this isn’t the case.

I’m not sure though, never actually used a valved mask myself.

It does protect you, though. For preventing you from coughing or sneezing on other people, a face shield might be more effective anyway.

If anyone tries to harass me for wearing a P100 respirator I can point to the valve as a reason not to donate it. (Granted, the valve could probably be covered with something without rendering the mask unusable.) Or I could wear a scarf over it, which might be better anyway.

Lots of reusable face shields available on Amazon now at relatively low cost. Though I had been making my own from 2.5 gallon zippered plastic bags, even with tears at the sides, top, and back, carbon dioxide buildup can be an issue during prolonged use over the mouth/nose. Have a few face shields on the way now.

Toronto is utterly filled with masks. I see more people with them than without them.

Most people I see on the streets in Sauga don't wear them. But there aren't ever a lot of people, since I don't go to stores (we relegated my mom to do all the shopping; she also gets to cut lines being a healthcare worker).

'"A face shield can serve as a physical barrier to the particles you emanate when you breathe, and as a physical barrier to particles hitting you when someone coughs or sneezes," said Adalja. "This is something people have been trying to think about as an improvement to the cloth mask recommendation."

[...] While Soe-Lin warned about face shields not filtering air, Adalja said that it was more important to block prevent the spread of droplets.'

'Trump Ends Federal Social Distancing Campaign Amid Rising Coronavirus Deaths'

Sweden:

'What I quickly noticed during the ride to my Stockholm apartment was how things seemed exactly normal for this time of year. Spring, when the Swede wakes up from his winter depression and goes outside to manically face the sun with closed eyes, was the same as it ever was. No one I could see was minding social distance. Cafés were full to the brim, and people were picnicking in parks, on the same blanket. And within the first few hours back in Stockholm, I saw more handshakes and hugs in public than I had seen in two months in Los Angeles, where I had seen none.'

Trump said he has seen evidence the virus was made in a lab in Wuhan

'Trump contradicted a rare on-the-record statement from his own intelligence community by claiming Thursday that he has seen evidence that gives him a "high degree of confidence" the novel coronavirus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China, but declined to provide details to back up his assertion.

The comments undercut a public statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued just hours earlier which stated no such assessment has been made and continues to "rigorously examine" whether the outbreak "began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan."

"Yes, I have," Trump said when asked whether he's seen evidence that would suggest the virus originated in the lab. Later, asked why he was confident in that assessment, Trump demurred.

"I can't tell you that. I'm not allowed to tell you that," he said.'

'Trump has claimed that China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic is proof that Beijing “will do anything they can” to make him lose his re-election bid [...] Trump said he could “do a lot” to retaliate against China'

'Specifically designed to satisfy the needs of nightlife, live events and entertainment industries, Micrashell is a virus-shielded, easy to control, fun to wear, disinfectable, fast to deploy personal protective equipment (PPE) that allows socializing without distancing.

[...] Supply system based on partially disposable canisters allows users to vape and/or drink safely from your suit. Drink can be alcoholic, non-alcoholic or a liquid meal replacement

[...] "Top only" suit design allows the user to wear their normal clothes, use the toilet and engage in intercourse without being exposed to respiratory risks'

https://production.club/micrashell/

Alas only a concept so far, apparently.

Might as well make it a full body suit and add hoverboard boots, robo-crotch extensions, bidet/exhaust blaster, and jet pack (or at least some flame throwers)....

Will Trump request abs on his?

$600 concert tickets might actually be justified if they include a rental fee for one of these. For $10,000 more a famous person will breathe/sing/spit into your face-visor.

In all seriousness, I have been wanting something like this for a long time. Though I am skeptical of this particular design.

There's two possibilities. Trump saw a breitbart/OAN/Fox article/random meme on Twitter saying it's China or he's just making shit up as usual because it's better to keep focus on China.

'The research community is reacting with alarm and anger to the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) abrupt and unusual termination of a grant supporting research in China on how coronaviruses—such as the one causing the current pandemic—move from bats to humans.

The agency axed the grant last week, after conservative U.S. politicians and media repeatedly suggested—without evidence—that the pandemic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, that employs a Chinese virologist who had been receiving funding from the grant. The termination, which some analysts believe might violate regulations governing NIH, also came 7 days after President Donald Trump, asked about the project at a press conference, said: “We will end that grant very quickly.”

[...] Researchers familiar with the laboratory are skeptical of claims of lax safety practices. Trump administration officials have reportedly pressed U.S. intelligence agencies to produce firm evidence linking the virus to the lab, but key spy agencies have not confirmed any connection so far.

[...] NIH’s move, which was first reported by Politico, “is the most counterproductive thing I could imagine,” given the research’s relevance to understanding the current pandemic and avoiding future viral outbreaks, says Gerald Keusch, a former director of NIH’s Fogarty International Center who is now with the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory at Boston University. “This is a horrible precedent.”

[...] experts are questioning whether NIH has the legal authority to unilaterally cancel an already funded grant in the absence of wrongdoing by the investigators.

[...] Keusch says he is trying to mobilize colleagues to contest NIH’s action. “This is cutting off your face to spite your nose,” he says. “This is the worst kind of thing that political interference can cause in a democracy.”'

Trump has seriously crossed the line from bat shit crazy to intentionally malicious now. We are drifting into 1984 territory, telling outright lies - where everyone knows they are outright lies, there is no hiding here - to cover up personal failings. How the US deals with this can drastically shape our future.

Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.

Not if your master plan is economic meltdown rather than mass death. If you want that then you have to do something even more difficult which is design a virus that is highly virulent, will kill just enough to make governments shut down their economies and then toy with the Wests weaknesses for democracy and liberty while the autocratic government of your own country cracks down and prevents spread within its own borders. Something something emerge victorious from the economic rubble while the countries that buy the majority of your produce collapse and have no money left. The only mistake the Chinese have made is not creating a vaccine for themselves before releasing it. I guess since they aren't part of the Master Race these kind of errors are to be expected.

Hence my idle theory  it got out a few years early due to that dratted fumbling lab tech.

Meh - deliberate, accidental ... it's the same result.

Face shields are cute and all but only really needed in this pandemic when you absolutely cannot avoid being close to infected people (Sars-CoV2 is not airborne). The best solution is to keep your damn distance. They're also not very practical for the average person, chiefly because of possible air filtration and carbon dioxide buildup issues. The people - among the general population, not healthcare staff - who need the protection the most are often those who can deal with it the least, namely those who already have respiratory problems. And the higher the protective grade of the equipment, the more difficult it is to breath in. Hence the standard run-o'-the-mill masks. They're the currently best compromise between usability and protection for the average person.

I have asthma which is as controlled as it can be and I'm still close to losing my shit in most standard masks, hence why I said I had to experiment with fabrics. Most of the ones people are making masks out of atm are a no-go for me.

Also, if you want the full beat, you also need protective glasses as the mucous membrane of your eyes is one of the best ways to enter your body for this particular virus.

Be safe, stay safe.

I do not think I would characterize the early stages of the response by Johnson and his government as even rising to the level of shaky. Johnson skipped five emergency meetings on COVID-19 and had a very slow response, ended up in the ICU himself after being way too cavalier with precautions, and may not have taken the necessary precautions quickly enough to prevent a lot of harm.

I also see in the Guardian that Johnson is getting ripped rightly for how he and his government are currently handling the pandemic. This doesn't seem like "shaping up nicely" either.
