So I did this like a true psychological test-the first person that came to mind.
Fiddler.
It was odd, I never really realized how important he was until somebody said "he was always the best of us" (or something like that). But he's the one I think about the most. The Everyman, there in every (well, many) important scene. But most of all, he was the one you could TRUST. And he just happened to be able to control a Deck of Dragons, somehow, just for fun (another thing that I didn't really appreciate until much later).
And now I'm thinking of lots of others...but I'll stick with the original plan.

Fiddler.
He survived the entire series and the closest he came to ascension was a promotion to captain in an exiled army on a suicide mission in the very last book.

Everybody here knows it's Rake.
I have always had a fondness for Dark Lords... And this one is much more a person than Sauron.

Udinaas. I appreciate his moral compass.

And you say Apt is the one who needs a GF?
Pearl is a lazy, look-at-me being cute and not choosing one of the 20 better characters by default because I want to pick someone not mentioned as often.
Pearl was a pecker head.
Dancer/Cotillion is the obvious answer.

You liked Udi. He was not your favorite character.

On the contrary, I loved Udi!
When I do another reread, it may very well switch, as that's the nature of this series. But it's Udi, followed closely by Duiker and Heboric.

I appreciated Pearl's sarcastic smarminess.
But thank you for pointing out the error of my ways.

Forgive me for being contrite and coming across far more serious than I intended.......
.....and yes, I forgive you for the error of your ways. Please say 100 "Hail Malazan" whilst you rethink the actions of at least 20 Malazan Characters not named Pearl, and realign your mojo with that of the true Malazan Heroes.

You mean in general, or relative to their life span?
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Just in general.
Favourite character is an excruciatingly difficult question for this series. Usually its much easier to answer. I'm going to answer the (I think) slightly different question of "who was I never bored when they were getting screen time".
Tehol. Cotilion. Icarium. Erastas. The Elder gods and any goods I suppose, in general.
Ugh still too difficult to answer.
