The developer's a typical European RPG studio: Brimming with interesting ideas, but poor when it comes to technical execution. Greedfll will be their sixth game since 2010, and not a single one so far has cracked 70 on Metacritic, being basically 6/10s across the board.

That being said, somehow the prior games were profitable enough for the publisher, Focus Home to give Spiders their biggest budget yet (about 5 mil) for GreedFall. And the previews and impressions I've seen from people who have received their copies early are generally encouraging. It's safe to say that Spiders have been really iterating on their own take on action RPGs that combine the extensive character progression of the Witcher titles with Bioware's companion mechanics, and they've been diligently trying new things when it comes to settings, generally ignoring the traditional "D&D or space opera" cookie-cutter molds most other devs fall into--which is in large part what earned them my respect and money.

I really would not compare this to Morrowind. Spiders and Focus are trying really hard to push the "we're like the Bioware beofre EA sucked the soul out of them" angle- so the focus is on story and characters, and less on open-ended shenanigans. The game also isn't open-world- more like the early Witcher games or DA:I , where you have several large "zones" and a few cities/settlements, but no single, seamless world. You are also looking at a lot of mutually exclusive decisions when it comes to choosing a faction to align yourself with, or which companions' advice to follow in particular situations. This isn't gonna be a single 100+ hour wandering around a world-type game, but more of a "play through 30-40 hour story multiple times to see how stuff changes"

I am waiting for reviews (the embargo's lifting on release date). ACG will be doing a review on this for sure, and Jim Sterling also loves Spiders. However, I'm optimistic and I'm looking to pick this up in the next few weeks. It's a slightly lower priced title as well, I think, which makes it all the more sensibly priced.

This week the game is 20% at gamersgate. Not just, pre-orders- the entire week.

review embargo lifting in less than 2 hours, and stuff's already being streamed on Twitch, with a generally positive response.

The devs also did an AMA today, for those interested.

EDIT: reviews are trickling in (many "in progress", because everyone under-estimated how long and dense the experience and replaying different permutations could be)

ACG is praising the quest design as being some of the best in a quite a while.

Since setting and quest design are the 2 things I look for in an RPG, I'm basically sold. Will pick this up on Friday once I get paid.

 reminder that this game was made by a team of about 20-30 people on a 5 million budget.

It's a janky Bioware-style RPG. People either love those or hate them.

I like ACG's reviews. I like Skill Up's reviews. As usual, the truth is probably somewhere in between.

Yeah, I loved Mass Effect 1 and 2.

Dragon Age put me off completely.

As far as I know you need a magic ring in your active weapon slot to use magic. But I still haven't found one of those and my starting class also doesn't use magic. Maybe the Théleme sell them.

Just got out of New-Serene visited Sioras Tribe. So far I like the game a lot. The quests are well written, the story factions and the world are interesting and I'm also getting into the combat system. :)

There are still some minor issues with the game like the the reused models for npcs and the interior of several houses. And that you find groups of bandits just standing in a field doing nothing, not even trying to hide. But I guess if you are a team of only 35 people with a budget of 5 Million € for everything you have to set priorities. And for that numbers the game is extremely impressive

There is one other thing that bothers me. Maybe I missed it, but was it ever explaned why we are searching exactly on this island for a cure? Currently it seems like a wild guess to me.

The reviews mentioned that it's because the natives appear to be immune to the Malichor. Can't confirm where that's stated though, cuz I'm not playing yet.

Once you notice something like that it's kind of difficult to ignore. I mean, almost all early rpgs had shitty repeated backgrounds but it didnt matter because the story was good and there wasn't the capability. It must be grating now when you know how good things could be. A big part of any game is finding new locations and background details make a big contribution to immersion. If the story is good though I'd stick with it?

My god everything is copied copied copied copied copied. I've begun to hardly play. It's all the same shit but with great dialogue. I keep repeating this gripe. I imagine people are finding it as fucking annoying as I find looking at the same paintings, people, lnterior layouts over and over and then over six more times in 20 mins of play.

This sounds like why I dropped Witcher 3 (except that was copy pasted quests all the damn time). Also a gripe I had with Oblivion and caves (and especially Gates).

I started laughting when the layout of the residence of the governor in Hikmet, the city of the Bridge Alliance, was the same as in New Serene. But they really put a lot of work in the exterior design of the cities. Hikmet looks really good.

Still didn't visit the Theleme. Somehow I got sidetracked and did everything but the main quest Posted Image

So far I'm really enjoying game. Only got one quest until now that annoyed me, but not because of the story. It involved a lot of running stairs up and down to talk to people and pick up stuff, and afterwards doing the same thing again for another document.

Finally started this last night (it's been a busy week)

Played for about 4 hours, still messing about in Serene. I started on Hard and I picked Intuition as mys tarting skill, just to make things difficult.

there's a few niggles, and the performance isn't great on my PC (I suspect its cuz I'm not running it off an SSD), but I like what I've played, it was hard to put it down.

Would've been nice if I could map some stuff to the mouse thumb buttons, but that's a common failing of all Spiders' games, so I'm not too bothered.
