The vigil in town turned out to be a full on protest and being a generally anxious nervous mess I didn't walk up as joining a mass of shouting people on my own is not really something I can do. I say loud, they were chanting but it was all lawful and contained internally.

There was however a counter protest, which was amusing - a trio of Barry Brexits appeared, started waving an Israeli flag at the protestors and accusing them of being terrorists, and when they got drowned out, they fucked off to Wetherspoons.

Holy Shit.

Netanyahu's psychiatrist Moshe Yatom committed suicide in Tel Aviv yesterday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A Suicide note read that Netanyahu (who had been his patient for 9 years) "sucked the life out of me. I can't take it anymore. Robbery is redemption, apartheid is freedom, peace activists are terrorists, murder is self-defence, piracy is legality, Palestinians are Jordanians, annexation is liberation, there's no end to his contradictions. Freud promised rationality would reign in the instinctual passions, but he never met Bibi Netanyahu. This guy would say Ghandi invented brass knuckles." He called Netanyahu's comments "a waterfall of lies". His personal diary laments a progression of their meetings, and the steady disintegration of his own personality under the barrage of self-serving rationalizations put forth by Netanyahu.

Moshe's neighbours were shocked as they said that Moshe had spent his career curing dozens of Schizophrenics before he worked with Netanyahu.

There's more in the article. It sounds like the Israeli PM ground this intelligent man down into dust.

Surely he could have just stopped treating him? This seems rather drastic.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Very little about this sounds like it's the truth.

One thing to touch back on the "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" slogan for a moment. It's strange to me that the media is focused on trying to dissect it and make it seem as if it's got genocidal intent (hell, some poor protester in Calgary got arrested for "saying it",......yeah Canadian govts suck at all this too...)...meanwhile every single Israeli politician and govt official (and many USA politicians, like Lindsey Graham and Florida Man) has not minced words when they've stated (as noted upthread) ACTUAL genocidal words about Gaza...like it's WILD to me that the media is talking about an "interpretation" of a cultural saying of an oppressed people...and not talking about clear and concise professions of genocide that need not be interpreted from the other side.

Was not on my 2023 bingo card...but here we are.

Right, and do you wonder if all of these news stories talking about antisemitism on the rise globally are including people that call for a ceasefire or Palestinian freedom as antisemitic acts? They certainly aren’t talking about the anti Muslim and anti Arab rhetoric going around.

The media is VERY good at twisting slogans to fit the meaning their backers want in the public's eye. Take the IRA's threat to Thatcher - 'Today you were lucky, but we only have to be lucky once, you have to be lucky every time." - in recent years it's been twisted into the opposite meaning, and in the minds of most the original quote is not the way it's meant to be read. So I'm not at all surprised to see Western media twisting words to make them seem sinister or otherwise objectionable.

I keep thinking how much this event has changed my perception of things....how many lies were we told during things like Iraq and Afghanistan? It turns out a LOT. So my eye is sceptical on everything now that gets reported on CNN and elsewhere. I want to make it clear I'm not running to the conspiracy "news" channels as a result, not at all....but I'm no longer pretending that journalism actually exists in an unbiased way on these news stations as I used to and everything is tailored for clicks and outrage and much of it predicated on the govt in charge.

That’s why I read multiple news sources so that I can try to figure out what is truth amidst all the propaganda. It’s not foolproof but it’s better than just tuning into CNN and drinking the kool aid.

All these -isms -- including anti-semitism -- are festering constants. It's their permissibility that rises and falls, with events / leaders / institutions setting the narrative, and determining what level of impunity the ugliest elements in our societies have to act. One might even argue that at the broadest view, pluralism and tolerance are on the rise, but it doesn't take a majority of people to cause backsliding at an institutional level. In fact, it takes shockingly few people to cause a disaster (or for that matter, an apocalypse) -- all they need is access to the levers of power and violence, and a little momentum.

In case you were wondering about his motivation:

"Downing Street announced on Monday that Cameron would join the government, accepting a peerage in order to do so..."
