Laseen and Dancer's personal assassin corps = GOOD
Mallick Rel the Merciful's personal assassin corps = BAD

Shadowthrone/Dancer/Dassem's murderous conquest of multiple continents = GOOD
Mallick Rel the Just's murderous sacrifices = BAD

Plus, you gotta love a guy who can at least temporarily put one of Wu's many bloodthirsty gods in their place.

I'm being somewhat facetious, but if you look critically at the actions of our heroes they can be difficult to justify. That's why I've always had a soft spot for the guy.

Mael cut him off in RCG, but we've seen worshippers force gods before, and as Emperor he isnt lacking resources.

Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours

Doesn't look like he's going to bridge between KR and GotM judging by the title.

Erikson has said that "Jhistal" refers to "both a title and a people, more the former now than the latter." I suspect the Jhistal of ICE's title refers to the people rather than Mallick Rel in particular.

In The Bonehunters, Tavore says to Mallick:

Quote

The Gedorian Falari cult of the Jhistal was eradicated in a similar manner by Emperor Kellanved, after all. Presumably you are among the very few survivors from that time.
So maybe the next ICE book will involve the conquest of the Falari Isles.

What if Mallick Rel was another foundling of Kell/Dancer and he eventually takes out Laseen for what he sees as retribution for what happened to Kell/Dancer in NoK.

Would we still see Rel as a bad guy?

Interesting. I hadn't even considered that it could be anything but a sequel to the ME books, but yes it could totally be another prequel story.

...which makes sense if the Rel-era Empire arises in SE's Karsa trilo.

I really don't want the Malazan Empire to end with Rel though. :(
Maybe Karsa kills Mallick Rel?

All we know about the future is the ref to Grub as the First Sword of the Late Empire or similar.

True. Rel might not still be Emperor by then.

Grub is a God by now, right? So Late empire could be in ten thousand years. I forget the events of the last books.

I mean, that's also a good point. If he is or becomes an ascendant, there's no telling what the time frame is.

Would be cool to see where his story goes.

The Malazan Empire may not last as long as you might think. Although its status in the novel canon is unknown, Erikson's gaming map of Quon Tali is labelled as "Post-Empire circa 1325". It seems to show Quon Tali as broken back down into its constituent parts less than 160 years after the MBotF.
