Cheers Patch I will look forward to seeing it! Never seen Chronicles of Riddick so I cant comment on Karl Urban. I still think Morgan Freeman would make a good Duiker...

Just remember Shaik Reborn that it still isnt a reality yet. When They've got actors all together and there actually shooting the movie you can scream your head off. As Patch said its 2 and half hours and there not in Aren. I like this so far with how long it is but it also says that this is a very big ambition to fullfil. I wish him all of Oponns luck he can get to pull this off.
As for when it gets pulled of and hopefully done very well, Im dying with anticipation for it to come out. Also very curious to know what these extra parts to the story the movie will have.

well...if i have any say (and i might) i would keep all three battles and shorten the script other ways...in a novel, written dialogue must explain more than in a script because of the story elements that can be implied visually...cyandor has it right about the thematic consistency of the three battles, and as i come to the end of the script i see more clearly the necessity of keeping them...of course, that's just my opinion

Every single word in that book has relevance, so I see it hard to make it into a film.

That was what I was thinking - could make a really cool soundtrack as well - I'd buy it!

Now don't get me wrong. SE is my fave author and all that, and he deserves upmost respect and recognition, but a film? Surely this book is too huge in scope to make a film of. Some of the concepts are just astounding and even with the most advanced cinematic technologies they would be hard pressed to capture even a fraction of the vastness of the story.
'But Simeon!' I hear you cry. 'They are only planning a small part of the book, the bit with Coltaine and his legendary march (The Chain of Dogs, hence the name!)! 'Well true, but am I the only one who thinks that maybe even that is too huge? Unless of course they do it Kill Bill style, and make it a 2 part movie, which I guess would work.
However I will say this. Should they make a film, being an actor (and one of SE's biggest fans ever) I should be in it!
Viggo Mortenson as Coltaine. Could work, or it could end up being too aragonesque.

Wow I seem to have made enemies here... even amongst Folken (who I thought was my friend...
)Anyways, put it this way: Canada = Celine Dion. England = Monty Python. It should be obvious who we want in this film! Well, not Monty Python. I was just doing famous people from both countries.

You're right, he has that kind of face. He could play any soldier, not only a Wickan. For Baudin he might do as well, if he appears in the movie at all.
However, I'm not sure the Felisin story can be kept in a film on the Chain of Dogs: there would be too much to show. Where she comes from, the mines, the Silandas... On the other hand, Sha'ik is important for the Chain. But, you don't even need to have a scene with her. She might remain an unseen presence.

True Tiste, but then I also thought it impossible to adapt LotR to the big screen. Still not sure how they'll pull it off, but if SE has the final say as Patch confirms, it should turn out alright.
And I hope it's gonna be 3hours at least

True...though it no doubt works better if the actor has a passion for what s/he's doing. In that light, many actors would probably identify with the pathos of some of the CoD's characters but not appreciate the fantasy genre per se.
But it just occurred to me....where's the happy ending in CoD? There wasn't one...*spoiler removed*

Western Canada has terrain similar to the Chain of Dogs, all in the same place(namely Alberta, which means Rodeo is lucky).
Laurence Fishburn doesn't have the Coltaine persona.
Avery Brooks on the other hand, now there's a man who could play Coltaine.
Bana, was a good Hector but still not Coltaine.
The guy who played Ajax, Tyler Mane, could be Coltaine if he loses his jovial disposition for good solid neutrality.
I still stand by Bruce Campbell as my first choice though.
Edit:
Ok recap, just centralising everything.
Coltaine:
-Russel Crowe
-Eddie Izard
-Viggo Mortenson
-Bruce Campbell
-Laurence Fishbourne
-Avery Brooks
-Sean Connery
-Tyler Mane
Duiker:
-Anthony Hopkins
-Val Kilmer
-Christopher Plummer
-Derek Jacobi
-Geoffrey Rush
-Morgan Freeman
Bult:
-Brian Cox
-Danny Trejo
-Tyler Mane
-Arnold Schwarzenegger
Nethpara(annoying noble):
-Bob Gunton
Nameless Marine:
-Izabella Scorupco

He's fine as Legolas (apart from the fact when Gandalf dies and they're all crying, he looks like he's trying to catch a whiff of a fart he's just done). But he's just got one way of acting. He's exactly the same in everything else: Pirates of the Carribean, Troy (the topless thing .....: puke: !). He's just got this one ridiculous English accent and he keeps doing it and it's so so so so so bad. Words cannot explain (which isn't very helpful in this mode of communication). I'm hammering my fists on the table as i type.

...what kind of original stuff? I mean if we're talking along the lines of introducing Anomander into the film for example, I may have to speak out on this issue! I gotta admit though, I'm intruiged now. It will be good to get SE that kind of publicity, and when people say to me "Hey, that 'Chain of Dogs' looks good, what do you think?" I can launch into this huge thing about how it comes from possibly the greatest writer of all time, and how I've been a huge fan for ages and blah blah blah, I can sound really impressive!

One. Coltaine is described as young in the books, he has been in command of the Wickans since he was a teenager but is still only in his late 20's early 30's
Two. Do you really think a film by a little known author is going to be able to attract the massive investment that is needed to procure a major Hollywood star. If you can manage that Patch then hats of to you.
Three. Although at first I was skeptical about being able to bring such a information dense book like Eriksons to the big screen I think the choice of following only the Chain of Dogs section is very clever. It is easily the most linear secton in any of Eriksons books and will not need a vast amount of backtory like almost every other strand in Eriksons books, as well as this most of Chain of Dogs is very visual. My only concerns is that for realistict battle scenes of the scope of those in CoD will require a very large budget and a skilled director, both of which must be difficult to get!
