Well Patch said it was being filmed in Australia. So the English and Canadians now have pay for plane tickets.

i don't believe it. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to make a film of that?! They would mess it up anyway, no way could they represent everyone's little viewpoint of the story. Plus how could you get funding for a book noone in hollywood has heard of?

Wasn't it List who had the visions? Anyway, I've no possibility to reread the battles so my two cents shall have to be thrown away..

There's plenty of desert-like land in Canada--you just have to know where to look because we keep it secret.

i hope to god that they stick to the story. i hate it when people change the story for a film. it will just spoil the essence of one of the greatest books ever written. PLEASE DONT CHANGE ANY OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Slow Ben - did you mean Ajax??
dont really think he has the Coltaine feel to him.
as lovely as Eric Bana is, he just aint the right person to play Coltaine either.
Laurence Fishburn - to me - is a nono. i just have a grudge against him for some reason.
by the way, incase you hadnt realised, i am very critical about things. but i am a nice person.
would LOVE to be an extra.
has anyone got an idea where the movie would be filmed??
probably Canada

I'm definitely not understanding why it's a problem to have a dark ending. Screw the happy ending formula, be true to the books, it'll be a far more powerful movie.

Chain of dogs... Its such a powerful story, the way to covey some of the emotion is with great music.
I was thinking something along the lines of the LotR's music. It will bring a tear to your eye without even watching the film.
Plus i can see Geoffrey Rush as Dukier. He has that feeling of knowledge like he's seen it all before. Kinda like Dukier?

Sad events maybe but possibly not sad endings. I mean, we always like to know that there's some hope....we NEED that when we empathise with a bad situation.

I can't believe everyone's up for this! As if it isn't hard enough being laughed at by my other half for sitting reading Deadhouse Gates and blubbing my eyes out when Coltaine dies, i'm now going to have to do the same in the freakin cinema! I've read the book twice now and still i can't believe it when Coltaine gets crucified. You'd think he'd have learnt the first time around. Now we're going to have to SEE it.
If the Gellor ridge battle is skipped out, Nil and Nether killing the mare and then being heartbroken has to be squeezed in somewhere else because it's really poignant with 2 kids having to kill something they love. AND Duiker HAS to read the bit of cloth with his nameless marine's name on it. Man, that gets me every time!
Anyway, good work Patch. I'm glad you lived through the assault on your character in the early days of this thread. It will be a great movie to watch. The only bad thing is that we'll never be able to read the book again without seeing it the way it's portrayed in the film. That's the worst thing about LOTR, my mental image of Gimli is going to look like Salla out of Indiana Jones forever.
One final comment: if Orlando Bloom's in it, i'll damn well crucify myself to end the misery of watching his acting!

I'm quite big actually - 6 ft 2 and about 12 stone!
Also there is nothing sad with enjoying Monty Python, arguably the best comedy ever known to man, or indeed being apreciated in a foreign country for your cool accent!

Sorry about being skeptical, Patch, but one quickly learns to not take everything at face value on the big old Interweb!

Super-excellent question of the day:
Why are you not filming in Canada, says one Canadian to another?

Hmmm, that sounds a very good idea, the chain of dogs is nearly everyones favourite storyline in the 2nd book, and persoanlly it's my favourite story line. the best bit about it though for making a movie is that it doesn't really intersect with many of the other storylines in the book, the fiddler, kalam, feslin, mappo and others storylines don't intersect at any point, wheras in the other books the many storylines intersect at various points, so something would be lost if that storyline was removed from the movie. It was one of the only storylines which on reading teh movie thread in the phoenix inn that i thought could be pulled off in a movie.
anyway the idea sounds very good i hope that you manage to pull it off, and attract more people to the malazan world.

Seaking of which, something serious for a change.
@ Patch, do you plan on using actors from different countries as people from certain groups in the Malaz world, such as Aussies being Quon Tali, Canadians being Falari, Napan. Brits Being Genabackan, Black Americans being Seven cities people. But yeh that sort of thing. TO fit in with accents.
Or is something like that down near the bottom of your list of worries with making the movie.
