The one thing I did notice was that the book may have been split in half but it still cost the full price for half book. I am always leary of spending 40 dollars for a book. Especially hardcovers, due to the amount of room they take up.

Uh, it's still as large as a normal book. Think of it as a book the size of two books, split into two :D

KHAAAAAAN! :D

Could be "sword", as in choosing the sword over the noose. First I thought "Arya", but after reading some theories I remembered that she knows nothing more of Arya than the Brotherhood Without Banners do, so it wouldn't save her.

Indeed. This "first half" is still over 700 pages long in hardback;)

True. I am just about done the book, and I must say not to much happened. I found the Cersei plot incredibly boring as well as the Brienne line. Still it is well written and George RR Martin is still among my favorite author. For ****s and giggles I reread the first book. What a great book.

Deeply disappointed by AFFC after such a long wait. GRRM said it was better to tell all the story for half the characters than half the story for all the characters. Have to disagree. Leaving out Tyrion, Bran, John and Dany was a bad idea. Too little of Arya, way too much of the Greyjoys and Cersei.

And what happened to Cersei? Gone from devious, manipulative queen bitch to helpless whinger who makes a lot of incredibly stupid tactical decisions.

Not worth five years of waiting.

We've only seen half of what we waited five years for yet though, as the next book is really just the other half of feast.
And I don't think that GRRM had much of a choice, he had to place the less interesting part of the world (slicing it geographicly was really the best way) in one book, and the rest in one.

started reading affc and have to agree with some things. the povs are not the best. but even without the great tyrion this book is still better than 99% of fantasy (although i am very disillusioned with the genre now).

On a different note, just wanted to let you guys know that AFfC has reached the number 1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list.;)

By doing so, he becomes the 4th fantasy author to reach the top of the charts: Eddings (once), Gaiman (once) and Jordan (4 times).

That just goes to show how fooked up the market is. Eddings is Satan's spawned love child and Jordan is the mutated version they made once genetic engineering came along ;)

Well i read Eddings when I was like 13 or 14 I think. Loved him for the most part though. Did hate all his sex clashes though.

But I can inderstand him getting there because his is so easy to read for the masses and can almost be classified as 'epic' fantasy. But only because of the length of his stories really.

But that is great to see with martin. I quite liked for the most part A Feast for Crows.

Lets just hope that one day One of Eriksons later novels will get there.

Oh yeah 13 or 14 is fine but if you go back and read it now.. I'd literally hit any adult who was reading that and thought it was one of the best fantasy series out there. One of a very select few books that I didn't finish, Instead throwing them away in disgust.

Yeah I kinda have a hate thing going for Eddings
No really?
Yes Really

Gah! New York Times is disrespectable not to put Goodkind up as a bestseller!!!!!!!!!!!!11 Those communist bastards! Their disliking of his books is a brick thrown through a window! They hate goodness and kindness. The New York Times is the modern day Darken Rahl. And people who smoke marijuana are murderers. If four people toked a hookah they'd be a quad. Damn it. The New York Times hate his work because it is righteous!

PS: Anyone women want to sexually humiliate me? I'd appreciate it. Send me a PM.

I was thinking of Goodkind being left off that list, but I don't think he ever reached the top of the bestseller list - though he reached the list, on occasion.

Hello,

I am a new member of this forum after I became a recent new fan of Steve Erikson and his great books. Hi to everybody. ;)

But I need to say that after reading some threads, I became quite disturbed.

QUOTE:

"No question, but tell him to keep his mouth shut and die as soon as he finishes the series so I can complete it without any of the money going to him."

QUOTE END

I find this very disturbing (!) especially since it comes from a person which (as far as I understand) is supposed to be the neutral administrator of this forum and should be a good example for others and not break the rule of his own forum. How can I expect enforcement of polite rules when the administrator breaks them?

I will see how this goes and I hope that these emotional rages will not repeat otherwise I would regret to loose the opportunity to have discussions about the Steve Erikson books on this forum.

Just finished it...
SPOILERS hidden:

I enjoyed it, but am left looking for the kaboom. Where, oh where, was the earthshattering kaboom? No finale, not really. No Red Wedding. No Blackwater. No Oberyn v. Clegane type duel. It really felt a bit like a 'slice of life in Westeros' novel.

And come on, George, three literal cliffhangers... Cersei, Arya, Brienne, all left mid-action. That's weak, and not at all how previous books have been concluded. Especially given that the next book won't address these characters at all. Robert 'Mat stuck under the wall for four years' Jordan, i expect that sort of crap from, but not GRRM. Weak, just weak.

On the bright side, i thought Jaime's chapters were excellent. Arya continues to develop and while Sam dragged at times, i did find his perspective interesting. Brienne was more interesting for the events around her than her actual perspective - the Catelyn Stark/Thoros/Beric plot and Cat's new status and how she got there were just awesome to read.

The Ironmen storylines were interesting, as were the Dorne ones, altho they seemed mostly to serve to show how events were going to tie back to Dany and her dragons. Neat how events on Dany's side of the world are prompting actions in Westeros before she even gets there.

All in all a worthwhile read. Some points which make it weaker than earlier books imnsho, but enjoyable, satisfying, and worth the money i paid for a hardcover, albneit discounted from Amazon.

- Abyss, actually found Illyn Payne to be interesting.

At least, its safe to assume it is;)

It's incredable though, even admins have opinions sometimes. He just gets annoyed cos we take the mick out of his Robert Jordan fan-dom;)

AFFC was a damn good book. A definite change of pace from the rest of the series and if you haven't read any other GRRM books I can understand why that might be jarring. But the slower pace of the book is more in keeping with his other books like Fevre Dream. I get the definite feeling things are going to ramp again before the end of the series so it's good to have a bit of a breather. Good news about A Dance with Dragons, that GRRM's going to drop a few of the AFFC characters in at the end to resolve some of their cliffhangers.
