I think serule is 13th level initiate. Also remeber that tool was badly cut up in that fight if he was a normal human he could not have fought like that he would have died if he chose to use the flat of his blade.

you can take a lot of cuts and keep on fighting, especially if youve got epinehprine pumping through your blood. its just when you stop fighting and the rush ends.
i think (not sure at all) that mok was able to beat tool. and i think kilava is all aghast that the first sword was beaten by a mortal and blah blah

IIRC, Mok was comatose (courtesy of Envy) for most of the journey/battle whereas Tool was pretty beat/tired/hacked up during the course of it. So Mok and Tool fought when Mok was 'fresh' whereas poor old Tool had been through 10 rounds! Even then Mok was sorely tested . . .

Mok one easilly. However their is debate that silverfox drawing on tools tellan warren weakened him. Also mock was also fighting a lot he had to fight his way clear of an entire fortress.

mok did not beat tool easily, what on earth gave you that idea? it was quite a long fight, also tool wasnt up to his full powers because byt hat time he was clanless, when his clan and their bonecatsers were alive he would have been much better. also even though undead dont tire, tool was pretty badly cut up, whicj meant that he wasnt as effective, what with sliced tendons and suchlike. also tool uses a heavy sword, which in not suited for one on one dueling, rather better for battles... imagine, how fast would tool be trained with those light seguleh blades (he was as fast as mok wwith a blade that weighs as much as a man!)

Am I the only one who thought the Seguleh were a little over the top? They're just too good (unless they have some sort of preternatural attributes).
How can an entire society exist/function in that manner? And how can they keep track of rankings in a pre-information age society? How do you know if you've been bumped down or not, and how do you ensure that everyone properly updates their markings
I enjoyed them and their role in MoI for the entertainment value, but the fact that 3 Seguleh and Envy etc. waded through entire armies including K'ell Hunters was a bit much imo.

Am I the only one who thinks the Seguleh are dull and boring?

@ rolan:yes you are, the rest of us think that seguleh are awesome.
@ kilanthir: um they keep track of their rankings by the amount of marks upon their mask. you know if you are bumped down because you are bumped down if you lose a duel, that means you submit, or if you dont, they will kill you. everyone is very honest about their rank, no one cheats. i think there are two reasons for this. firstly, the seguleh are a very honorable race, and they exist purely for their ranks. they wouldnt cheat because that wouldnt satisfy them. thats why, even when rake was kicking ass left right and centre, they only attacked him one at a time.
the second reason is that, if you pretend you are a rank higher than you really are, you simply wont survive, you wouldnt have the skill to back up ur rank (remembering that ranks are constantly challenged in seguleh society). you would be challenged pretty soon, and any pretender would have his ass kicked, he would die

@Sytkan: I understand about the markings on the mask. But if, say, the the 8th is defeated by the 11th, there would need to be a chain reaction where a lot of Seguleh would have to adjust their markings lol. Its not just a question of honesty or honour, its also an issue of awareness, logistics and record-keeping. Its just not realistic imo.
Like I said, I enjoyed them and on the surface they're pretty cool in a Samurai/Klingon sort of way, but they don't really hold up to scrutiny.
The thing with SE is that there are certain elements throughout his novels that seem really tight and well thought out, and then there are others that seem rather loose and whimsical (or just poorly thought out).
@Jen'isand Rul: lol funny you should say that because I just started re-reading MoI yesterday after having re-read GoTM

pg 1102 MoI paper back. too see tool realing beneath blows. the fight lasts less than 2 minutes. considering toc drags himself across the floor and kills himself during the fight. Tool himslef says to mok. third of the seguleh when you are done with me take toc the younger form this place. Also tool may be weaker without a clan. But at the same time he is an undead untiring feeling no pain magically powerd, invested sword wielding tlan imass. A seguleh is just a well trained human. I think that makes it fair

@Cause: If your saying that Tool knew he couldn't defeat Mok (thus putting to rest the question of who would win or who is better) than I agree with you.

@Killanthir. Thei seems to be only a 100 (just a guess) or so actuall ranked segulleh. The rest are just qualified for a certain rank. their are hundreds of 11th level initiates and they are around 13 years of age or so. Their are hundreds of black masks who are somewhere like 5-7 old. So only a few would have to bee informed. and they live on an island. how hard do you think it is to spread word the eighth is dead. certainly if the first died mok would become the 2nd and perhaps never find out but does it reallt matter while he is away?

@Killanthir: Not poorly thought out, just not his idea. So he doesn't venture there too much. Besides, the 11th would never be able to defeat the 8th without defeating those of lower rank. First defeat 10th, then 9th and THEN comes the 8th.
