Just reported

One of the true giants and not just of feminist sf & fantasy, but sf & fantasy and literature in general imo. A world without her is less magical.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell

Aw man. Looking for reactions to this, I saw EW has a recent interview with her that's really lovely, about books that mean a lot to her: http://ew.com/books/...oks-of-my-life/
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I've never gotten round to reading her stuff. Perhaps it's time.

:) Heartbreaking.

I finished The Eye of The Heron a few weeks ago. It was compelling.

Dang I remember reading the Earthsea Quartet years and years ago. Really fantastic series that was instrumental in my love of fantasy, almost as much as someone like Tolkien was.

Saddened to hear of her death.

Damn. I read the original Earthsea trilogy back in high school and haven't really read anything else I would consider similar since.

Earthsea quartet was possibly some of my earliest, maybe the earliest fantasy I ever read. I think a friend had it as a setwork but he liked it so much he gave it to me to read.

A huge loss. Earthsea was fairly new when I read the first book, and it was a big inspiration.

:)

I read Earthsea fairly late (only three years or so ago), but it's definitely one of the most original YA stuff out there, even today.

I read this for the first time last night on recommendation (Omelas short story) and it's incredible. https://www.utilitar...m/nu/omelas.pdf

This is sad news.

I barely remember earthsea I was so young when I read it! It guided me to AsoIF and eventually the MBotF.

Those who walk away from Omelas was a moving story, one of the greatest Sci-fi works to mind along with Flowers for Algernon and Gold.

She also has a novel that inspired James Camerons Avatar, ‘The word for earth is Forrest’ I think its called.

I think I might spend next month trying to put together a collection. May her soul rest in peace.

Very sad. Oddly, I've read Earthsea and The Left Hand of Darkness, and both missed the mark for me; though I was surprised how much I enjoyed Rocannon's World. I was between books when I heard the news, and immediately open up my Kindle and threw The Dispossessed into my "currently reading" folder.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
