I'm tempted to read the chapters they release to avoid spoilers, since I read slowly. If this were ASoIaF, I would definitely do that. But these Stormlight Archive hardcovers are so beautiful to behold, I feel like having the physical copy in my hands is part of the experience.

Did this really matter so much?
I mean Szeth ends up back at the end with a new magic sword, one way or another, and shows up in EDGEDANCER.
Why so wound up in whether Kaladin or the storm killed him?
...unless you really really wanted Kal to have something else to whine about, of course.

That summary was great!

Don't think I'll read anything just yet. I want the whole book before starting. I was somewhat surprised when I heard they'd release the first 300 pages online but then I heard the book is (With 300 words per page) 1650 pages long! (For comparison ASOS was 1400 pages) A hundred pages here or there doesn't really matter anymore at that point.

I'm vacillating. Tempting, but then the wait for the rest of it will be worse.

Amazon has it at 1248 pgs, 1 was 1008, 2 was 1088.
I hope this one is made of sterner stuff. My bk 2 felt fragile when I reread Lift's bit before Edgedancer. Those books are going to fall apart one day.

Never trust page counts. They lie. My edition of Harry Potter 5 is almost as long as my edition of ASOS although it's only 61% of ASOS' length. Werthead's blog has an excellent article on word counts: http://thewertzone.b...f-all-time.html

Why so I not know what tour talking about? What retcons?

Spoilers!
I had not heard of this change! I suppose there will need to be some kind of forward in book 3 that explains it.
Also its clear my memory of what happened, in book 2 specifically is quite foggy!

In the original hardcover spoilers Kaladin kills Szeth in their Dragonball Z fighting in the air. BS felt this was against Kaladins character and rewrote the scene to I'm not sure what either Szeth died from falling or the Storm killed him.
Either way he is dead at that point but the point is that if he does this once he could do it again and you run the risk of having hardcovers out of wack. That's a lot of $ over the course of the series that you start thinking about in the back of your mind and wondering if he will pull it again.

Personally, I'd rather have the original version even if it isn't canon anymore. It's more valuable in my mind, and these books are good enough that I don't mind buying them again for Kindle whenever Amazon puts them on sale for $1 or $2.

This is what I was gonna say. That I have the hardcover original version means more to me now. It's like having the original cuts of the Star Wars trilogy. Canon or not, I'm glad I have them.

If it's a change the original will never get a second publishing run.
So in theory it will gain value. But we're talking hundreds of thousands of copies probably, so, don't bank on it as your retirement plan.
