I thought E3 was a big disappointment as well, and this with the current consoles pretty much at their maturity. In other words, developers should be able to maximize their potential.

I think this is the way of things for E3 now. With instant social media, I just don't see it having the impact it once had and it being the "event" in was ten years ago. I think E3 will continue to diminish. I could be wrong and next year Microsoft, Sony, et al. will come out with guns blazing and impress the hell out of the most jaded gamer. Time will tell.

Yes we live in a world of constant leaks and false rumors. Shadow of Mordor was supposed to be an E3 reveal. Instead it had no impact because it was leaked a month early.

As to what feels like a lack of titles especially in what should be perhaps the peak of the consoles life I cant say. It might just be perception. Call of Duty and battlefield for example are 2 games alwysa hyped and they recieved no attention.

That Beyond Good & Evil 2 trailer was beyond stupid & vulgar. So disappointed. I'd prefer no sequel to that.

Not sure if serious?

I thought the trailer was awesome. Bit worried about the descriptions out there that suggests it's multiplayer focused.

And exclusive Destiny 2 stuff. Looks like Activision is really jumping ship from Microsoft and picking Sony as the console front-runner

Arkham Spidey actually looks entertaining. Hopefully it's a timed exclusive only, but given how posessive Sony is, I'm not get my hopes up

I think that already happened in 2014. They've had Playstation exclusive content for Destiny from the start I think.

I'd not expect Spider-man to show up outside the Playstation. By the way did anyone else catch the Miles Morales (Ultimate spidey) reference at the end? Is that a tie-in or just a cameo?

- Days Gone. Was that a zombie bear?

- God of War. Uh, gets help from Jörmungandr (world serpent)? Which mythology says heralds in Ragnarök?

A zombie bear covered in barb wire. I like the idea of animals being affected by the virus as well. All though what about zombie mosquitoes?

The Midgard Serpent showing up was cool. I wonder about the plot. From this new trailer I get the impression that the kid is in fact not Kratos son. But the kid is important in some way. Maybe he's an Aesir/Ase? A son of one of the gods?

As a Scandinavian I am going to feel a bit angry if Kratos kicks Thor's ass.

Is there main game spoilers to the HZD bit?

Haven't played the game but from what I could tell there was no references to the main game. Just some show and tell.

Wow, this Devolver Digital presentation is really terrible. I think it may be intentional and they are trolling E3 or something. I guess I don't really care to watch any more.

I feel that ever since the Serious Sam 3 marketing campaign Devolver's been cultivating this "we're anti-establishment rebels for teh lulz!"-publisher image. And they continue playing on this gimmick for some odd reason (I guess their fans dig it? Or maybe it's he only way they can see themselves staying relevant?)

I thought it was funny but went too long and lingered on the individual skit or joke too much.

Finished watching all the conferences.

I am annoyed at Assassin's Creed Origins. They are yet to say exactly what period of 'ancient Egypt' it's set in, and from the trailers I am getting the distinct feeling that they've just smashed together ten thousand years of history.

I googled it after watching some game-play and I saw a ship filled with what looked roman style shield and the men onbaord had those greek like helmets. Apparently its around the era of cleopatra. So Late in the history of egypt.

It's indeed set during Cleopatra's age. Supposedly when they originally set out to make the game they wanted to include Rome and Greece. That turned out to be too big a challenge for one game. One assumes that they're making a new trilogy and we're going to be meeting Ceasar, Anthony, Brutus, Cratus, etc. in a later game. "Help Cicero collect the 99 letters that blew away in the wind", etc.

In which case I wouldn't really call it 'ancient Egypt' in the traditional sense, more 'classical Egypt' (yeah, maybe I'm being a pedant, but it's an important distinction for a historian, they were quite different cultures). If it's Cleopatra then it's the Ptolemaic period, when Egypt was ruled by Greeks following its conquest by Alexander the Great. It will be interesting if they show all those various Egyptian, Greek, Nubian, Syriac, and Roman cultures interacting.

Nintendo "conference", if you can call it that, is about to begin.

I'll be happy if they just show more Mario+Rabbids content. I was really enamoured with that footage at the Ubisoft conference last night.

Maybe some Mario Odyssey footage to better get an idea of how the 3D platforming will feel.

Hoping for some kind of game coming out of left field.

A good Metroid and Starfox game would be cool.

I'd be lying if I said I felt disappointed by the conferences (except EA, they were terrible).

It's certainly a step back from a few years ago, when everyone and their dog was promising new level of immersion, new AI techs, and all kinds of futuristic mumbo-jumbo to go along with the consoles.

But I can't say it's a bad thing per se, since a ton of criticism levelled at those conferences was "too much talking, not enough games!"

And this time we got... quite a lot of games, actually. A lot of release dates, a few games that were announced earlier but now confirmed for PC (looking @ Code Vein + Monster Hunter World, for example).

Yes, I'm kinda disappointed that we don't know what Arcane is actually working on beyond some DLC. I'm annoyed that Bioware is making a multiplayer-focused game I have no interest in. It would have been nice to get a glimpse of a story-focused Star Wars game.

But there's BGE2 that's clearly going for a "Fifth Element" vibe (which is more than ok by me, cuz I loved that movie to bits), and could end up fantastic (or not). The Battletech game sounds and looks promising (those novels were one of the first pieces of SFF I read in Canada, and it's made by the original designers of the tabletop game, who are also the guys behind the fantastic Shadowrun returns). There's a new Klei game announced that's got aliens and pirates. Ubisoft is trying to make AssCreed Origins into an RPG (loot and skill trees), and who knows, maybe they'll come up with some kind of interesting world for once? Their inspirations are supposedly Black Flag (and good on Ubi for acknowledging that it's the best thing they've made), and Witcher 3, after all...

Also, Shadow of War sounds fantastic, and I don't know if I'll ever find the time to play them, but both X-COM2 and Total Warhammer(s) sound like absolutely fantastic games evolving in a nice direction (though I suppose I'd need to wait for the Long War to become compatible with the new expansion to play Xcom)

I REALLY need to break my crippling addiction to AoK HD and get back to my shortlist, is the moral of the post. That, and there's plenty to like about the E3 season, :D

Commenting as I go.

Kirby is looking good. However it also looks like every Kirby I think I've seen the past 10 years.

Just called Kirby? I guess this is the gritty Reboot of the complicated Kirby universe.

This Pokken Battle game looks like Dragon Ball Z.

And they're developing a Switch focused Pokemon game. That should sell another 10 million consoles.

OH DAAAAAMN Metroid Prime 4?! ... Just a teaser. I feel very teased right now.

Papercraft Yoshi? Wool, Yarn, Cardboard. Yoshi comes in many forms it seems.

"An evil dragon appeared"... I hate Japanese games so much.

I guess I should try one of these Fire Emblem games one day I just don't really want to.

Zelda in Skyrim?

I'm looking at this Zelda DLC footage and I feel all Zelda'ed out. Unless they release some significant story content I feel like I am done for now.

Yes, more Mario+Rabbids info. August 29th already? But I am unemployed! How am I supposed to afford this!?

Okay this Mario footage is fun. That "Hat possession transformation" mechanic is hilarious.

Seems a bit crazy. Can you just take over anyone or anything on the fly?

I'm basically just crying inside for the money to buy a Switch :( Literally just Mario Kart 8 Deluxe + Breath of the Wild + Mario as a freakin' T-Rex and I'd be sold for the life of the damn console. I still play Mario Kart Wii from time to time as it's the last one I have, and I'm never deleting the profile on which I spent over a thousand hours, if and when I do get a Switch I'm guessing I'll still be playing MK8 in 2027 or something. And that's without even mentioning Metroid Prime 4.

Spider-Man Arkham Knight looks fantastic and based on that trailer alone I'll definitely be getting it I think, but overdependency on QTE's has always been a big turn off for me so we'll see what the finished product looks like I guess.

Looking forward to some HZD DLC, game was incredible, so more of the same will be great hopefully, by the title I'm guessing it'll be moving into the mountainous north with the Banuk.

Not really too interested in anything Bioware or Bethesda until DA 4 and TES 6 if I'm being completely honest. Just waiting for them to re-release Skyrim on the Microwave now... :p

I'm really excited about Fire Emblem Warriors, stupid evil dragon plot aside. It's a Fire Emblem x Dynasty Warriors blend lime they did with Hyrule Warriors. Think DW with a FE skin and a plot that doesn't realy matter.

Definitely serious about BGE2. I know it wasn't a gameplay trailer, but the whole scenario was this gross conglomeration of everything I don't like about modern games, and I'm not sure I'd want to spend time playing even a technically good game in the world it paints.

YMMV, of course, since it's a matter of taste.

The trailer had various reactions on RPS, which is my main games-related info source.

-there were multiple snarky complaints about "swearing and tits" among other things. Now, I watched the trailer twice and I can honestly say I was too busy absorbing the giant flying police cruisers (pre- and post-explosions), and the giant Ganesha statue to even notice any real titillating bits.

What I did see (and this is also listed by RPS commenters- is a very Luc Besson-esque world. And as I've mentioned before, "the Fifth Element" had its own aesthetic, being a "hyper sci-fi" vision of the future- with cyberpunkish thematic overtones, but chaotic instead of stark.

Of course, this is a trailer, and it may not be representative of the game at all, but the game is being made by a French studio, and it seems to channel the aesthetic of a landmark movie by French director- so I hope they manage to express it.

Secondly, BG&E, despite being packaged as a pretty "kiddie-cute" game dealt with a lot of the traditional cyberpunkish tropes. Although there was the point that Jade was taking care of an orphanage, and the wildlife photo-hunts, there were also corporate/alien conspiracies, prejudice, and a whole host of "adult themes" without throwing in swears + tits. So in that sense, this "prequel" does not appear to be such a drastic departure from the original. Yes, being a triple A title, there's a certain amount of "mass appeal" thrown into the trailer. But like I said, I literally didn't even notice that (or the swearing, tbh until it was actively pointed out). The concept behind it could be solid. Or it can be another legendary disappointment a la Duke Nukem Forever. We'll have to see.

I get what you're saying, and I guess I just wasn't excited by that (gameplay footage might change that). And while I admit I do have a problem with going from a PG game (with some headier themes) to an R game -- I think it's pointlessly exclusionary -- I am not generally a puritan about this kind of stuff. When I say it's vulgar, it's not just the swearing, it's the feel of it -- it feels like lowest common denominator, cynical game-making. It doesn't feel edgy, it doesn't feel bold, it feels like The Howard Stern Show.

While it has issues I think this trailer does a good job of portraying the eldritch weirdness of lovecraft.

Apparently they showed some - very early - gameplay behind closed doors. It sounds very No Man's Sky weirdly - procedurally generated worlds, seamless flying from planets to space, a galaxy to explore, lots of different ships etc. You also create your own monkey/pig/human character.

:( Less of a "gameplay", more of a "tech demo"

It seems a bit "out there". Not necessarily bad, but just not very "the-thing-you're-supposed-to-be-a-sequel-to"-ish

It's too early to tell just what it'll end up being (especially since there's really no incling as to what you are supposed to do beyond the typical Ubi-open-wolrd-game-faffing-about

But, all being said, I do think "The Fifth Element" is one of the greatest movies ever, so i'll keep an open mind to this project without spending too much time following it.

I guess it's inevitable. A 15 year gap between games (probably 18-20 before they're done) will mean that there will be a ridiculous jump in size, scope, fidelity, etc. if you're not just trying to copy the old game. I appreciate that.

BGAE isn't really a true classic. It's not like there are millions of people clamouring for what they're nostalgic about. It's more the dream of what might be. In that sense I think Ubisoft blew it out of the water with that trailer.

The best of E3 list is being voted on:

http://www.gamecriti...m/nominees.html

Predictably it's littered with the AAA sequels.

A Way Out should be on the Best Original Game list.

It's done on actual gameplay available for the journalists to try rather than trailers. A Way Out was disqualified for that reason:

Quote

The following annnounced games were not made playable to voting publications at E3 and were therefore disqualified from award consideration: Absolver (Devolver); Age of Empires: Definitive Edition (Microsoft); Anthem (EA); A Way Out (EA); Beyond Good & Evil 2 (Ubisoft); Cuphead (Studio MDHR); God of War (PlayStation); Hunt: Showdown (Crytek); Kingdom Hearts 3 (Square Enix); Life is Strange: Before the Storm (Square Enix); Metroid Prime 4 (Nintendo); Metro Exodus (Deep Silver); Monster Hunter World (Capcom); NBA Live 18 (EA); Ori and the Will of Wisps (Microsoft); Shadow of the Colossus (PlayStation); Marvel's Spider-Man (PlayStation); State of Decay 2 (Microsoft); The Evil Within 2 (Bethesda); Uncharted: Lost Legacy (PlayStation); XCOM 2: War of the Chosen (2K Games); Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Nintendo)

That Best in Show list is so underwhelming. AC: Origins I'm 'meh' about; Mario Odyssey will probably be great, but I didn't see enough of it, and same with Wolfenstein. The biggest surprise was probably Mario + Rabbids for actually looking like genuine fun and a novel way to go (novel for them, obviously it's straight up XCom :( ).
