'Democrats and Republicans eager to tidily conclude former President Donald J. Trump's impeachment trial within a week may have a fresh obstacle in front of them: the biblical commandment to keep the Jewish Sabbath.
One of the lead defense lawyers for Mr. Trump has informed Senate leaders that he is an observant Jew who strictly adheres to the commandment against working on the Sabbath[...] the lawyer[...] asked that the trial be suspended if it was not finished by the beginning of the Sabbath at 5:24 p.m. on Friday, and that it not reconvene until Sunday.
[...] If they moved to fast-track the trial to ensure it was concluded by sundown Friday, it would make for by far the speediest presidential impeachment trial in history. If they suspended it as Mr. Schoen has asked, the proceeding could bleed into a federal holiday on Monday and what was supposed to be a holiday week for the Senate, when its members were supposed to get a break to go home to their states. If leaders opted instead to delay it further, that would punt planned action on confirming Mr. Biden's nominees and advancing his pandemic aid bill.
[...] joins a list of prominent Jews who have run into issues in Washington over their observance of the Sabbath. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the former president's daughter and son-in-law who are Orthodox Jews, said they had received special permission from a rabbi to attend Mr. Trump's inaugural festivities in 2017. They said they had obtained a similar exemption at least once later in Mr. Trump's presidency to travel on the Sabbath.
During the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton in 1999, a Connecticut senator at the time, Joseph I. Lieberman, who is an observant Jew, walked four miles from his Georgetown apartment to Capitol Hill to sit as a juror. Because Jewish law teaches that one may break the Sabbath if the matter involves "concern for human life," Mr. Lieberman, in consultation with his rabbis, devised his own rule whereby he refrained from campaigning or performing any strictly political activity on the Sabbath, but would attend Senate sessions and vote, if necessary.'

*OFFICIAL MCCARTHY APPROVAL POLL*
I watched Republican Kevin McCarthy protect QAanon conspiracists, defend insurrectionists, and defile his office.
I need 50,000 responses before midnight to sink his approval in Congress to historic lows.
PLEASE CONFIRM: Do you approve of Republican Kevin McCarthy's disastrous leadership?
NO!!! >> YES >>
I won't mince words.
Kevin McCarthy is one of the most dangerous Republicans Congress has ever seen.
[...]
-- I've watched him defile every word of his oath of office
Now, I'm going to watch him go down as the worst Republican leader in history.
I need 50,000 responses on my McCarthy Approval Poll before midnight to show Kevin McCarthy just how disgusted Americans are with his leadership. Will you take a second to record your response?
I want the poll results waiting on McCarthy's desk first thing tomorrow morning. But my records show your approval is still undecided.
I don't care how many filthy insults Kevin McCarthy throws at me.
But when his lies and deceit put the American people in harm's way -- I will stop at nothing to hold him accountable.
Before midnight, will you take 10 seconds to respond to my Official McCarthy Approval Poll? I need 50,000 anti-McCarthy responses to expose his reckless lies and disastrous leadership. >>
PLEASE CONFIRM: Do you approve of Republican Kevin McCarthy?
NO!!! >> YES >>
Thank you,

1. Probably not from Nancy Pelosi (especially since it's not asking for money)
2. 'HUMILIATES'? What? Seems calculated to rile up conservatives... I'd almost bet this is from a right-wing org. But more likely just phishing....
3. 'I will stop at nothing'... so I will put an internet poll on his desk tomorrow morning!

'After two hours of blistering opening statements from House Democrats prosecuting the impeachment case against former President Donald J. Trump, his defense lawyer, Bruce L. Castor Jr., opened with a slip, calling himself the "lead prosecutor."
It didn't get much smoother from there.
Mr. Castor, who is most famous for refusing to prosecute Bill Cosby for sexual assault when he was the district attorney in Montgomery County, Pa. [...]
At one point, Mr. Castor seemed to refer to Senator Ben Sasse, Republican of Nebraska, who has harshly criticized Mr. Trump for his actions on Jan. 6 and was one of only five members of his party to oppose an effort to dismiss the trial as unconstitutional. Mr. Castor called Nebraska a "judicial-thinking place" and suggested that Mr. Sasse "faces the whirlwind," drawing a befuddled look from the senator.
As Mr. Castor spoke, other senators appeared restless and started talking among themselves.
"The president's lawyer just rambled on and on," said Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas. "I've seen a lot of lawyers and a lot of arguments, and that was not one of the finest I've seen."
[...] On the conservative TV station Newsmax, Alan M. Dershowitz, who served on Mr. Trump's defense team during his first impeachment trial last year, panned Mr. Castor's performance.
"I have no idea what he's doing," Mr. Dershowitz said. "Maybe he'll bring it home, but right now, it does not appear to me to be effective advocacy."
[...] Schoen, another of Mr. Trump's impeachment lawyers who followed Mr. Castor, had an easier time keeping senators' attention. He derided the House managers for hiring what he called a "movie company" to stitch together the most disturbing scenes of the Capitol attack as if it were a "blood sport." Mr. Schoen played his own video presentation — with sinister music — showing clips of Democratic lawmakers through the years calling for Mr. Trump to be impeached.'

[Edit:
'Trump’s defense lawyer David Schoen closed his opening statement during the impeachment trial with a work by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Schoen cited a portion of Longfellow’s 1849 poem “The Building of the Ship,” [...]
“Sail forth into the sea, O ship!” he began. “Through wind and wave, right onward steer! The moistened eye, the trembling lip, Are not the signs of doubt or fear.”
“Sail on, nor fear to breast the sea!” he said reading the last lines of the poem. “Our hearts, our hopes, are all with thee, Our hearts, our hopes, our prayers, our tears, Our faith triumphant o'er our fears, Are all with thee, — are all with thee!”
Schoen left the podium after concluding the poem.'

'Marjorie Taylor Greene had affairs with tantric sex guru Craig Ivey and fitness gym manager Justin Tway[...] The embattled Georgia congresswoman, 46, has been married to husband Perry Greene since 1995 and shares three kids with him
Neither man denied the affairs when approached by DailyMail.com, but both refused to comment on their past relationships with Taylor Greene
"I have no interest in talking about anything to do with that woman. Everything with her comes to no good," Tway, 42, said
Taylor Greene had met her two lovers while working at a gym in Alpharetta, Georgia in 2012
Insiders say she was so brazen about her affairs they believed her marriage was on the rocks, but it appears the couple has put her infidelity behind them
[...]
"It wasn't a secret. Everyone who moved in her circles knew about both the affairs,' one man who worked closely with Taylor Greene told DailyMail.com.
And her boss, billionaire's grandson Jim Chambers, added: "She socialized a lot with us. I remember one particular pool party where she was lying draped over Craig's lap drinking a beer.
"She was quite open about it,' he added. 'We all thought her marriage was falling apart.
"But then I took my son to her son's birthday party and things seemed totally normal between her and her husband - even if they were a little lukewarm."
[...]
She calls herself a "strong conservative Christian," who planned to take her "family values" to Washington.'

'As rioters breached the Capitol [...] House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and [...] Trump screamed at each other over the phone. McCarthy told Trump to call off the rioters, to which Trump[...] said, “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are.” The former president refused to tell the mob to vacate the Capitol building. McCarthy, emphasizing that he could hear rioters breaking windows near his office, responded, “Who the fuck do you think you are talking to?” The two leaders then descended into a shouting match that did not result in action, according to Republicans briefed on the call.'

'Texas mayor tells residents to fend for themselves during power outage: "Only the strong will survive"
[...] More than 24 hours had passed since a deadly Arctic blast knocked out power across the state, leaving them without heat or electricity in below-freezing temperatures. [...] many also lacked running water, forcing them to haul in heavy buckets of snow each time they needed to flush their toilets.
Residents turned to a community Facebook group to ask whether the small town planned to open warming shelters, while others wondered if firefighters could do their job without water. But when Colorado City's mayor chimed in, it was to deliver a less-than-comforting message: The local government had no responsibility to help out its citizens, and only the tough would survive.
"No one owes you [or] your family anything," Tim Boyd wrote on Tuesday in a now-deleted Facebook post[...] "I'm sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout!"
[...] "The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!" he wrote on Facebook[...]
[...] Boyd suggested that residents without electricity should simply "step up and come up with a game plan." Those without running water could either deal with it, or "think outside of the box to survive and supply water to your family." He did not offer any further guidance, such as where safe drinking water or reliable electricity could be found.
"Only the strong will survive and the weak will [perish]," he wrote.'
'Later on Tuesday, Boyd announced his resignation and admitted that he could have "used better wording."'

'Rick Perry Suggests Texans Voluntarily Go Without Heat to Fend Off Scourge of Socialism
The former [Texas] governor turned Trump energy secretary thinks people freezing to death should hold off a little longer.
[...]
While all of the state's energy sources share in the blame of the power crisis, proportionally, it's basically all natural gas's fault. "Texas is a gas state," [...] an energy-resources professor at the University of Texas at Austin, told The Texas Tribune. "Gas is failing in the most spectacular fashion right now." ([...] even if Texas did use a higher proportion of wind to run its state, it wouldn't necessarily be wind's fault for the outages. As many have noted, wind turbines operate just fine in Antarctica; Texas was warned to winterize its infrastructure a decade ago in order to be able to churn out electricity in freezing conditions and apparently chose not to.)
Of course, those facts haven't stopped other Texas Republicans from weighing in with their very wrong opinions. "This is what happens when you force the grid to rely in part on wind as a power source," Representative Dan Crenshaw [eyepatch Euron Greyjoy, but with more bigotry] tweeted[...] "When weather conditions get bad as they did this week, intermittent renewable energy like wind isn't there when you need it." [Right, no wind during storms.] In another long thread, he wrote, "This raises the obvious question: can we ever rely on renewables to power the grid during extreme weather? No, you need gas or nuclear."' ['A benefit of geothermal energy is that it is not intermittent like solar and wind power, which means it can be used at any time of the day, any day of the year.' 'Austin was one of the first cities in Texas to use geothermal energy for heating. In fact, even the State Capitol [building] was originally heated by geothermal water.'
'Geothermal energy can be used in areas where the temperature outside is below freezing. You can extract energy easily as the temperature inside the ground nearly remains constant all the year long.'
'Is Texas' Energy Future Geothermal?
[...] the unique geothermal sources deep below the Texas turf are largely untapped.
[...] While enthusiasm in the state's geothermal potential persisted for years, the natural gas glut unleashed by fracking ultimately drowned it out.'

And there are these things called batteries....] 'Then he blamed everything on…California:
[... Crenshaw tweet:] "#1: It's a once in a century weather event. California has constant energy problems and high prices."' [The last time the generators froze in Texas was in 2011. Climate change is probably increasing the severity of the polar vortex, so this will most likely be happening more often....
'Texas failed to learn from 2011 snowstorm, reports suggest'
https://www.statesma...ted/6780847002/
]
'"#2: The reason for blackouts is complex, but in summary: Texas took too many lessons from Cali, over-subsidized renewables, & pushed out baseload energy like natural gas."
[...]
"Texans would be without electricity for longer than three days to keep the federal government out of their business," Perry is quoted as saying. "Try not to let whatever the crisis of the day is take your eye off of having a resilient grid that keeps America safe personally, economically, and strategically."
[...]
"Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
@AOC
Republicans could trip over their own shoelaces and they'd still find a way to blame me, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, the Green New Deal, BLM, anything but accept responsibility for their own actions and dealings.
Ineptitude, bigotry, and corruption. Disasters in their own right."'
