We should start predictions for which films are going to be announced as having a re-make / sequel / prequel / re-boot / spin-off / be shat all over in 2017.

I'm already predicting GoT character tv/movie spin-offs/prequels.

Well guess what,

We`re getting a new dune tv series.

I hope it will be great.

Apparently Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL and BLADE RUNNER 2049) is keen to make DUNE, and it could be fast-tracked as his next project.

http://variety.com/2...res-1201929280/

I'd go with that. ARRIVAL was excellent and the BLADE RUNNER trailer is very promising. Villeneuve has a very distinctive visual and atmospheric style that I think would fit DUNE well.

When I saw the topic title, my first thought was 'Villeneuve had better be directing this'. So I'm alright with that idea.

personally i like Lynch's version (flawed though it is) AND i liked the sci-fi channels' version.

Between the two of them, they did a pretty good job.

Still wish Jodorowsky's version had seen light of day however (at least based on the Giger artworks i've seen of it)

Will watch for a new version with trepidation

I don't think Jodorowsky would have handled Dune well. In his longer storytelling projects, he keeps shoving everything into explorations of gender bending (usually hermaphroditism), fetishizing of dwarfs, and these weird jumps in time that aren't well handled. He's also not actually any good at depicting happenings of epic scale despite the artwork that's been released. All of his stories are these personal dramas between about... 5 people, with a few being really rich and a couple living underground somewhere for a while.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

first off, love the avatar.

Second, i was not a fan of the movie. SF debris had a rather long review about it, goes into some interesting backstory if any are curious but i honestly do not think he was the right director for the movie (all the background bs aside). Lynch has this esoteric visual style that doesn't mesh well with how grounded dune is supposed to be.(that or its simply the fact i've never seen a lynch movie i liked).

End of the day felt like the movie was a bad decision. The pacing for the first hour is fantastic, introduces the cast and sets up the intrigue. Issue is the first hour goes to the point of the supper before the betrayal i think... After that it just seems like every scene is a coles notes summary of an event in the book with no real flow. So we're left with terrible pacing and nothing really gripping afterwards. Kinda felt like there was a laundry list of things to cover and they took the items, divide by remaining run time and fit them in accordingly.

i ADMIT it was flawed, and i wasn't referring to the background artwork.

The pacing is all over the place, and there are MORE than a few bits skipped for no good reason - the reintroduction of Gurney Halleck is particularly awful

"oh they aren't Harkonnens they're smugglers" right before Gurney appears.

Still, as a kid, LOVED the movie.

Been a while since we last discussed this.

The DUNE film is now fully greenlit and is proceeding as a two-part adaptation of the novel. Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL, BLADE RUNNER 2049) is directing both parts. Shooting is due to begin in the spring.

Casting is now in full swing and the following castmembers have been announced:

Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides
Rebecca Ferguson as Jessica Atreides
Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides
Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen
Dave Bautista as "The Beast" Rabban
Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam
Javier Bardem as Stilgar
Zendaya as Chani

So far, the casting is absolutely smashing it out of the park.

That is some biggish names hitting this. Holy shit.

Agreed, the casting alone is actually making me excited, and the prospect of a really solid Dune movie is super exciting.

Still love some of the ideas in the original book that never really got used much elsewhere - why do we have so much melee combat when we have lasers and rifles? Well, that's because personal shields exist, and also if you fire a laser at a shield, a small nuclear explosion occurs. Brilliant.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

The cast, the director, the idea of splitting it into two parts...all of this makes sense to me, and makes me excited!

If it's split into 2 parts, where/how do you think the first part will end?

The novel provides this split moment well actually.

Duke Leto's death as he confronts the Harkonnens
Jessica Drinks the poisonous Water of Life (possible time to show Alia being created into what she becomes in the womb)
Paul takes the name Muad'Dib and gets with Chani

That would be my guess, there is a 2-year time jump in Sietch Tabr at that point, so the perfect point to start Part 2 would be after the time jump, Paul's powers are really showing and the Fremen start to think of him as their Messiah.

Doesn't that make the first movie feel like it's mostly all setup, though? I guess they can shift around the Fremen duels to put a big one near the end as the sort of climactic battle, and then the dad's death as the cliffhanger setup for movie #2. Or maybe the duke confronting the Harknonnen becomes more of a battle than purely character drama.

The Harkonnen takeover is the logical split point, especially if they make it more dramatic.

Could likely throw in Paul and Jessica running from a sand worm or three then hooking up with the Fremen as an end point. Open the second movie with Paul going full MaudDib.

Also, have Alia go full ninja-mage.

It's hard to chop the book into 2 otherwise. Those are natural stopping points.

Any more of Paul's story and you enter into first child and Full-Muad'Dib territory which would be weird to end a movie on...and any less and you end up with Paul not even at the Sietch yet...

That said, I agree that they will likely rejig things around bit to give the third act of the first film some more meat. Which is fine. I trust Villeneuve 100%.

Sandworms. It really just needs more sandworms.

...and more scenes of Baron Harkonnen having gross things on his face lanced. That's very trendy now.
