Epicanthic Folds I still don't get them

Various characters in the series are described as having epicanthic folds or "heavy" epicanthic folds, and even after googling this and looking at images, I still don't know how to picture most of the characters possessing them. Also, they seem to be a common trait literally everywhere (okay, mostly just on Malaz Isle/Quon Tali, but I think it was common in Seven Cities as well?)... which I don't get. I mean, SE was/is an archaeologist/anthropologist, so he should realize it's kind of weird when people on different continents have the same physical characteristics. Also, some on Quon Tali apparently didn't, which is also weird since they're all on the same continent together.

Left is an eye with an epicanthic fold, right is an eye without (see the right sides of both eyes). As to your other questions, no idea.

There are plenty of epicanthic folds in North America that came over the Bering Strait/Land Bridge from Asia, so it's not too much of a stretch to accept the same sort of thing occuring in the Malazan World. Explorers, conquerors, migrants, Warren travelers, etc. Physical traits get around.
What is not forbidden is mandatory.

There is nothing weird about people on different continents having the same physical characteristics because we don't live on a planet where people stay in one place forever and Erikson/Esslemont didn't construct a world where that happened either. The series is literally about an invading empire running up against all sorts of challenges.
Invasions happen. Migrations happen. Different and convergent adaptations happen.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

What would a heavy epicanthic fold look like then? I know he used that to describe a few characters, but I'm not sure in what way it gets "heavier" or where it does.

In real life there are some people with epicanthic folds and some without living on the same landmasses.
Laseen did nothing wrong.
I demand Telorast & Curdle plushies.
