Basically, I'll be heading out to the area tomorrow for the next two weeks. mostly Northern Italy, with Florence and Milan being the main destinations.

I'm bringing a bunch of stuff to read for the trans-oceanic flights and then the train rides between cities.

but in case I do run out, does anyone know of stores in either Florence, or Milan (or Padua) that carry English books? Russian would also be acceptable.

Haha no way. I've been looking for that too.
To no avail.
Bologna is my local city and its a uni-heavy place. Still couldn't find anything there other than the odd comic book store. Still most of their titles were in Italian.
Hopefully Firenze will prove a better source.

Shame I'm leaving in 4 weeks -ish.

Your best bet may be bookstores within big train stations. Normal stores are unlikely to carry English language books. Not that I'm an expert on Italian book stores, but again, if not at big train stations, then nowhere else, either.

Last time I've been in Europe was in Spain. I recall picking up Neal Asher's "Shadow of the Scorpion" in Madrid, and later in some department store in Seville I found "Jonthan Strange & Mr. Norrel".

I wouldn't have expected finding english books in European bookstores to be such a problem, I think every one of the couple of bigger bookstores I've been to in Czech had foreign language sections of various sizes where vast majority of books were english, although usually they were only the most popular books like Harry Potter, stuff by King etc

The English language sections in bookstores in Europe have been popping up recently, but they're still not everywhere, aber it's sually the big chains that have them, not the small local bookstores.

Feltrinelli is a chain which usually has some English books.

The branch near the towers in bologna had some last time I was there.

I'm jealous of bologna being near you solid Snape the food there is amazing!

And I'm jealous that you found a bookstore there. I tried that big one on the corner next to said towers, and couldn't find any English language books. Other than study text books that is.
I was pretty baked like.

I've also climbed that tower, and just...don't.
