'In his first letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul admonishes the nascent church that "when I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." As with the saving power of Christ, so too with sandwiches: the truth may be unsettling, but in the end it will set us free.

Pizza is a sandwich. Pizza is the world's most popular hot open-faced sandwich.'

'This is not an intellectual journey for the faint of heart.

Sandwich Theory has historically been more ideology than science and to transition from darkness to light is an inevitably painful process (brilliantly exemplified in the ten-minute alleyway fight scene in John Carpenter'sThey Livewhen Nada attempts to force Frank to wear sunglasses). But enlightenment demands a ruthless criticism of everything that exists, ruthless in the sense of fearing neither the powers that would stop our inquiry nor the terrifying conclusions we may uncover.

But we are not here to play games. We are here to establish a scientific method of sandwich classification. And, just as Marx observed in the introduction to the Grundrissethat "human anatomy holds the key to the anatomy of the ape," so too I believe that pizza holds the key to the taxonomy of the sandwich.

After three consecutive days of heated group deliberation on Twitter, it is possible to outline the basic principles of sandwich-ness. We must start at the beginning. What is a sandwich?'

To me, this boils down to an argument that is a family favorite: is a dented circle still a circle? If not, should it be called a dented circle?

To me, semantics boils down to whether or not what is said is understood. For instance, if I ask my kids to draw a dented circle, they would immediately draw a circular shape with an bent edge. The fact that the object they drew is not by definition a circle is irrelevant. They understand.

Likewise, if in the Costco line, they ask for a sandwich, I am not going to ask them what topping they want, but instead will buy them the turkey pesto sandwich, not pizza.

This spans different nations, such as the case where fries are called chips and the idea of biscuits and gravy is disgusting.

That bring us into the realm of authorial intent and control. Just because he created it, does that mean it must always be as he imagined it? Is any progression or evolution not-a-sandwich because it's not exactly the Earl of Sandwich's sandwich? Are we forever doomed to wallow in the quagmire moating the quintessential sandwich utopia simply because the Earl of Sandwich is dead?

Is a sandwich made by anyone BUT the Earl even a sandwich in anything but name?

Hard questions for hard times...

First of all, Holy shit, a rare Gust Hubb sighting! welcome back!

secondly: I think I am somewhere between "structure neutral, ingredient purist" and true neutral on that chart.

There is no place for moderates in this day and age. Extremism is the only acceptable course. In the Sandwich Wars, you will be the first to fall.

I'm a structure purist, ingredient neutral. I don't care what you put into a sandwich. The discussion is about what a sandwich is and what a sandwich does. A sandwich "sandwiches" things. Things are sandwiched between two objects, those traditionally being sliced of bread. Not enveloped or held or contained. Sandwiched. There can be no middle ground on this matter.

I posit that a breaded chicken is a sandwich.

That's true sandwich anarchy - not the poptart in the reddit sandwich imagery up-thread. That coheres to most of the structures of "sandwich" as people understand it. It's the breaded chicken that determines if people are on this sandwich express train to world domination or not.

See, I get the argument, I think there are degrees to which how crazy you combinations can get. Like, I think sandwiching something else in between two pieces of breaded chicken or chicken paddies is fine. That's still a kind of sandwich. Unconventional but still a sandwich.

It gets more hazy when you start to want to argue that something like an Oreo is a sandwich, at which point I'd argue that a sandwich is a meal and an oreo or an ice cream sandwich are deserts or forms of cake.

But a sandwich is something that consists of foods sandwiched between two separate pieces of food. The hotdog, to return to the beginning of this thread, is traditionally not completely separated into two pieces of bread. As such it merely cradles the sausage, rather than sandwiching the meat.

It's a rare hot dog bun that does not become two separate pieces of bread sooner than later. So I would say that it evolves into a sandwich in short order.

You're misunderstanding me - I say that the breaded chicken itself is a sandwich.

It's chicken encased/sandwiched by many pieces of bread.

They can't be encased and sandwiched at the same time. It's either or, and in the case of your chicken, they're encased.

They absolutely can be encased. I have said for years a calzone is a sandwich because that's all bread around it.

Calzone is Italian for 'sandwich pie'.
