Sounds more like the game I hoped it was going to be. Shame I got rid of it a while back.

I got to a good point when I last played, with a decent base and a picturesque planet.

I've zero gaming time at the minute but I'll definitely be checking this out.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

It's a trap!

Which I walked right into, I guess.

Update so far... my home planet is gone. My base has gone. All my farms, resources and hours of designing and constructing and collecting... gone too.

The new rings around planets look pretty, and you can now design your own character.

Where the hell is all my stuff though?
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

it should be saved somewhere and you can re-deploy on a new base you like.

check the subreddit for more info. I didn't have that and started a new character.

Things are REALLY different, especially mining and stuff.

It looks like you have to find a new base, activate the computer, and previous base parts should be there. Looks like a lot of people are having trouble with it though.

My first impression was.. my ship needs a clean! More surface detail on everything. New space station layout is much better, opened out and occupied, it actually looks busy.

All icons and menus have changed. 3rd person view now available. My guy looks a bit Mandalorian at the mo.

I went to one missions desk, tried to abandon a previous mission, and it causes the game to crash. Reloaded, it does it every time so I'll leave that for now.

Outside, I boarded a freighter - it's available to buy for like 16 mill instead of the impossible prices before. I still have about 67 million from my liquid explosive farm, so I can actually afford one right away. (I'm fussy though so I may see what else is out there first.)

Flew down to planet surface. My canopy is bugged, it's constantly flickering open and closed, which is pretty annoying. Planet was a lush one, and the differences are obvious. Dust swirls, better animated animals, better textures - frame rate has taken a hit though. I was having controller battery issues at this point and the canopy thing was annoying me so I'll have to explore more later.

The whole game is overhauled now - loads of tech is now obsolete, tech components and elements are different, and you can now refine materials to make new ones.

It's like starting over I guess. Which I don't really mind if it's better, but I need to sort the canopy bug.

Had another look this eve.

I bought the freighter for a mere 6 million, and am now able to build inside it. The storage menu has the option to rebuild my containers, which still hold a lot of my supplies, so all not lost.

And I now own a freighter! I built a control room, and since I now own a mining vessel too, I sent it off an easy mission.

I can now buy and store more than one ship, so once I find one I like I can see if the canopy problem will resolve if I get a different one.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

This really is a remarkable update.

Walking across arid planet, there are fossils in the rock surface, dust clouds, plants moving in a breeze, and the rings around the planet make an amazing backdrop in the sky.

I found a deserted base, surrounded by 'whispering eggs.' I destroyed one... and
Spoiler

Meanwhile, my mining ship returned from its mission. I checked in with the commander, and got a log of all the engagements and discoveries it had made, signals it responded to, and attacks it fended off, along with the units and materials it brought back.

I now want to set up my freighter base, farm and all. I want more ships in my fleet. I want to explore some planets in search of a decent one to set up as home.
And I want my canopy fixed... I'm guessing that will be one for a patch though.

This new update does look very exciting.

But I felt the same way about that last big update.

It would need to be a very quite time of the year for me to jump back in.

I'm the same. Not sure I can throw myself into this game and give it the attention it needs.

I have zero time. Kids are now off school, I've got the bulk of the kitchen fitted in time for holidays but still need to work on it, and tomorrow we're packing for a week away.

I've had some absorbing times on this game though, and couldn't resist checking out the update/overhaul. The stories emerging on reddit sum it up well - people stopping to help out stranded travellers, planets with volcano-like mountains, new materials and tech being discovered... I'll certainly be putting it on when I do find some down time.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

And they actually do this, it's not just a written random report. You can follow the ships and see what they get up to.

I'm currently on holiday but I can't wait to boot this up when I get back.

Yeah the detail kind of indicated this. Second mission not so successful, they got damaged early on so I ordered them home for repairs. The crews mood was a bit down. Despite the fact they're allowed pets on board!

Getting to love my portable refiner. Take it out, fuel it up, and stuff things in it to see what comes out. Then pack it up again. Been making fuel for the freighter which needs some refined material.

The graphics upgrade makes a really big difference. So does third person view. Soaring over planets in a cool ship is so much better visually now, the controls smoother. There's even a dust cloud thrown up when you land.

Shit, you can't repair your frigate from the freighter control room.

But you can fly over to it, board it, talk to the captain, and then go around and manually repair the bits that are broken. (It had some weird infestation of creatures that ate the circuitry. Mynochs?)

Patch downloading.

Should sort a few issues, like my canopy problem. They hit this quickly, unfortunately they're correcting a glitch which let you use two refiners next to each other as duplicators, before I had time to take advantage!

Back from holiday, had to put it on for a bit as a quiet escape after being crammed in with too many people for hours.

Nice patches have fixed any obvious glitch bits.

Took my freighter into an entirely new system, and landed on a beautiful red planet. The plants and grasses are different shades of crimson, the ringed planet above was highlighted by the sun, and I watched an actual roiling cloudbank approaching - moving in a very convincing, swirling storm pattern.

It's so alien and beautiful I'm going to respawn my base here. I want to see how much of my liquid explosive factory has survived the update, and check out the new building components.

Finally got around to starting a new game - the beginning is already quite different from what I remember when it first released. And all these guides and pointers are a godsend.

Started out in a 4-planet system. One had constant acid rain, another was an irradiated wasteland, and a third was scorched by firestorms. The fourth, on the other hand - wow. It had an ocean covering almost the whole of one half of the planet, with tiny islands dotted around it, and on the other side was an enormous continent. I decided to make my first proper base there :p

It looks like the start-up now always throws you onto a planet with some extreme conditions, to introduce the survival aspect. It can be frustrating when you find a beautiful planet that throws burning rain storms at you every five minutes, but it adds a real feel to it; hurrying for cover and waiting out storms in caves or in your ship gives you quiet moments to reorganise inventory or watch the clouds.

I debated starting over for the tutorials, but I've been playing long enough to pick it up, and all this freighter and fleet management is new to me anyway.

I found a great planet to respawn my base - it basically reappeared, all resources intact, but on a new planet. Problem is, there's no space station in the system, so I might reload and find a better system before restarting my factory.

So many new upgrades for ship, suit and multi-tool that I need more units! Want to find a cool s-class freighter now, mine is only a C. I do love the way you can summon it in space and it warps right to your location!

There are some useful tips and good pics on reddit.

Two things I took from that. 1) I forgot how dang beautiful that game was. Simply stunning. 2) I flipping love 65daysofstatic!

But yeah that was really cool and I kind of wish I hadn't got rid of the game but such is life and I've got way too much gaming to do and not that much time...

A reviewer that I trust said that with the latest update to No Man's Sky (is it called the NEXT update?), that the game is so much better that if it was coming out, as it is now, it would be in the GOTY discussion. She recommends playing on survival mode.

Her initial experience with the launch of NMS, was liking it, but that she lost interest quickly and stopped playing. I would like to play this eventually, but too many pending games about ready to drop and too little time to play them all. So this will probably have to wait until I play it.
