I still have my copy of this game, I never sell games really even despite how big a disappointment this was, do all these updates make it worth putting the game back on again?

I actually finally ordered my 2TB external harddrive, which is coming in a couple of days, so for once space is no issue here.

3rd patch out yesterday - another 2gb.

Hello Games are working their balls off to make this work. Ok, in part to save their business, but also because, they've always shown a passion for the game, and they want to deliver something decent (Which, stupidly, is what lead them to jump the gun with their overexcited pr before release).

It's totally worth putting on now, especially if you already have a copy.

I was initially frustrated by the controls and a lack of cohesion between the elements of the game. I eventually gave up on it. Now... it has a core stretch of combined tutorial/missions, and a solid basebuilding mechanic which removes that sense of wandering I found in the released version.

I hate meaningless unrewarding collecting in games, flags, viewpoints etc. But NMS has a vast array of materials and elements, which all serve a purpose, a bit more Minecrafty I guess. It's collecting heaven now!

Too much to list here, but the main things to upgrade are the ship, your suit, your multi-tool, your base, and even now your freighter. Each upgrade will change the game - better mining, faster travel, better environmental protection, and everything requires a bit of exploration and effort to aquire.

The environmental effects add a survival element. At the moment when I'm exploring Hoth for Frost Crystals, I have a limited time before my suit protection runs out. The frosting up effects are good; your temp recharges if you can get into a cave.
Also the sub-zero storms on my base planet make it a relief to get indoors or back in the ship. And there's underwater exploration.

It's.. massive. But now, instead of being given a vast universe where the aim seemed to be planet hopping, you can now play around a couple of systems for hours, with the massive universe as the background to head out into when you want.

I boarded a huuuge freighter last night. It was for sale for a ridiculous (at the moment) price, but man I want one at some point!

More new stuff. Found a crashed freighter. Massive wreck site, with multiple signs on scanner - but underground/buried in ship.

Took me a few minutes to realise that you have to use the terrain manipulator to remove material and mine tunnels down to the buried containers, which have a ton of loot. The wreckage isn't just surface dressing - it exists under and through the rock.

This all sounds much better. I was really excited about the game when it was first announced but fortunately waited for the reviews and didn't buy it. But I might now it's available for around £15. Thing is, I'm playing (and loving) Elite Dangerous at the moment, so it might have to wait a while, and maybe the price will drop even further.

I've looked at Elite - it has a lot of mixed reviews though. Can you land on and explore planets? Are the controls as annoying on console as reviews have indicated?

It's probably a case of choosing one or the other, if you've already got into one anyway.

That's what I was thinking, although they do seem quite different from each other. ED is a space flight sim as much as anything else, and it's pretty full on in that regard. You can currently land on planets that don't have an atmosphere and explore (in a vehicle), but there's no walking around in first person mode. They're updating it regularly and atmospheric landings are coming at some point.

I'm playing it on pc. I've used an Xbox 360 controller and I thought it worked pretty well, but I've now got a Hotas and it elevates the game onto a different level. My friend is playing it on PS4 and he's happy with the controller. He's also playing it in a private group with a bunch of other people, which sounds fun.

I'm guessing a lot of the mixed reviews have come from people who never played the original game or its sequels (Frontier and First Encounters) and had different expectations based on the release trailer, which made it look like some sort of fast-paced space combat game, which it isn't. It doesn't hold your hand at all, throws you in at the deep end, and it's up to you to choose what you do.

Every single beacon I used only lead me to manufacturing plants, drop pods or outposts with a new signal generator. I thought I was going to have to restart the game or be stuck on that hellscape forever. A fucking planet than just randomly had no shops and no zinc.

I swear when I finally found a base with a proper landing pad and a shop I was close to tears. A hallelujah was on my lips. Like a man stuck in a desert for 40 days who finally finds an oasis.

The game needs some kind of teleport to the nearest space station function.

On the plus side, I bought like 10 new inventory spaces, learned about 30 words, gathered around 300,000 worth of gold and platinum and had a really atmospheric adventure.


Having played a while I can feel the pain.

I thought I'd travel on foot (in frozen atmosphere) across a rough landscape to reach a monolith which is part of a quest.
When I got there though the thing triggered a massive Sentinel attack - I couldn't summon my ship as I hadn't refuelled the launch system, and I had no cover to escape the cold or the sentinels.
So I had to use the terrain manipulator to dig a tunnel; stabilise, then make a run, blasting sentinels and digging in again, back across shitty terrain to reach my ship.

Back on my home planet, I now have an exocraft to drive about in, and a net to park it. It can handle most terrain (only got stuck in a hole once) and when I added a scanner and gun it actually gets a dish and gun turret added to the outside which is a nice touch.

I still can't find the first anomaly on the Atlas path though. They're supposed to appear every two hours or so but I've still not seen one - and the galactic map is not the easiest to navigate.

Also ran into a space battle after last warp - fighters attacking a freighter. You get to choose sides for rewards, so I helped shoot fighters down.

Well we're now on 1.35. Fifth update since the big overhaul.

More glitches fixed, inventory tabs added for buying/selling, more stacking, and now ship classes have different grades of speed and handling depending on class.

I really need a new multi-tool, I have loads of tech to add to it but only 11 slots.

The fauna scanning bonus is good; now I get around 14k units just for scanning weird plants.

Just found an awesome ship - a fighter that looks like a blue A-Wing. And it has more (usable) slots! Well, I exchanged my current ship, the Dauntless, because as much as I like it, the broken slots will take a fortune to repair.

So I had a short time to dismantle all the tech in my ship and transfer everything over. I've lost the many unrepaired slots from the hauler but the exchange is good - the cockpit view is way better and this thing zips about sooo much quicker. Just need a cool name for it now.

Also got the blueprints for the Colossus exocraft, so off to Hoth to build one and do some recon and resource gathering.

Yep, still playing this.

My base has really expanded - I now have a large room for farming; it's full of hydroponic trays for growing the different elements needed for crafting expensive items for sale, so I'm now making millions from liquid explosive. The base editor is easy to use, and there's a ton of different components and decorations to make use of. The material choice can change the look from smooth and futuristic to worn out and rugged.

I've got all three land craft, and I just found a new system with a genuinely beautiful planet - hot and windswept, with mesas and cacti, with low moons visible through sandstorms.

Still on the lookout for a new home planet, this one is way more interesting than a storm free grassy planet.

Have now jumped multiple systems, mostly looking for a decent planet to settle on.

Found a Paradise planet; good amount of animals and plants, no toxic storms, and a beautiful rocky coastline with large oceans.

So dismantled my farm, packed up my base and moved system. New base is looking soo good - central farm, colour coded storage containers all along one wall, 3 biodomes extending out on raised struts, with lots of glass to admire scenery.

The base building is such a time waster - so many ways to construct, with colour and material variations for every single item.

Farming acid and liquid explosive for max income... with millions starting to accumulate I'll be looking at freighters soon, but at the moment I've got a new homeworld to explore. Only been underwater a few times, but there are shoals of fish, and one big prehistoric looking shark that tried to eat me.

And when I was out at dusk, a goddamned dragon flew over - must have been as big as my ship. There are a lot of shitty looking creatures in this game, but sometimes it really gets it right.

It totally is. I can see why some people still won't be happy with it, but it's sort of clicked for me. The home base has done it I think... it's no longer a game focused on gathering enough fuel and engine components to travel on - you can stay, build, explore, farm, and once established you can system hop looking for better planets, Atlas Stations or new tech, always with the option of teleporting home from any space station.

It's my go-to after work evening unwind game. There's still a ton of blueprints and tech out there I haven't discovered, upgrades for the ship and multitool I haven't built, and I've now got an ocean planet to explore. I'll see if I can figure out how to share pics from my ps4.

Just spent some time night diving. The kelp sacs you need to make waterproof rubber glow in the dark so they're easier to find at night.

I now have enough to build a landing pad. Just got to figure out how to make a decent walkway to join it to my main base so when I land I can walk straight in.

You have to be a bit inventive as not all components connect. Like, you can't just make walkway struts on their own - but if you construct a sealed corridor, put the walkway struts underneath (they adjust to whatever height) and then delete the corridor components, you're left with an aerial walkway.

Now I need some weird carbon I've not seen as I want to build a holodoor. Because they look cool.

Shots of new base. The landing pad is actually better left for other ships to land on, then you can trade from the front door while farming or building - different ships will land if there's a space, or circle if you leave your ship there.

I wonder if I can build another one. There was a kind of cap on the number of construction pieces used on my last base so I've been keeping it functional so far, so not much decorative stuff yet.
The farm is now just producing the components for liquid explosive and circuit boards, which both sell for around a million units each, which is a steady turnover. I can't see the cap here though so it either changed with an update or I'm not looking at the right place.

Traveller - would you say this could be a decent investment of like $5 when it's on sale again? I like the idea of building your little slice of alien planet settlement... for all the space stuff I don't see this ever matching Elite.

Its a very specific type of game.

I'd put it more along the same lines as the Journey or Minecraft... games that are just good for a wind down in an evening.

For that cheap I'd say it was worth it, if you know what you're getting. It's not a fast paced space pirate game, its a chance to explore different planets, build a base out of minerals you discover, and upgrade all your stuff as you go. Although there is a story quest, and an end of game goal, I found the base building and animal hunting relaxing. The continual search for better ships and weapons is also quite absorbing, but the game can only hold interest for so long, especially when you realise the limitations of the capabilities of the planet generating process.

So the teaser trailer for No Man's Sky NEXT, the newest (free) update for NMS, has been released:




The update is coming out July 24th (and the whole game is also coming out for Xbox), and the so-far announced features (some of which you can see in the trailer) are:

- Multiplayer.

This is the big one. True multiplayer. Team up with actual people you can actually see and explore the galaxy together/build together/do missions together/fight other players/race other players. There will also be character customisation, including, from the hints in the trailer, playing as alien races as well as spacemen. From the trailer it also looks like you'll be able to customise some vehicles.

- Visual Overhaul.

Now you can play in third-person as well as first-person. It looks like in third-person your health/shield details will be indicated on your backpack. You can also see the booster jets extend and retract when being used.

Some planets will now have rings. Suns will be true suns (so you will actually see dark sides of planets from space, unlike now).

Improved terrain generation, textures, water and clouds. This is apparent in the trailer, draw distance seems much greater, plant life is lusher, water has effects (it's not exactly Sea of Thieves water still, but then what is).

More detailed ships, NPCs, and buildings. Again, in the trailer you can see the ships have way more moving parts than they previously did.

- Unlimited Base Building.

Previously you could only build bases in pre-designated spots. Now you can build anywhere, and build much larger bases and, indeed, colonies. Hundreds of new parts. You can also build underwater bases, and own multiple bases.

- Command Freighters.

New ship type - the frigate. Now you can have a whole fleet of ships, all of which you can command from your freighter. You can send them out on their own missions, or deploy them in the system you're currently in. Improved base building and customisation on the freighters themselves. Galactic Commission Station on your freighter bridge from which you can take missions, including ones which are specifically multiplayer designed.


I haven't played NMS in months, but I'm hugely excited by this, even though I don't intend to play it for the multiplayer.
