I just remembered that Laseen used a lot of Otataral to counter magic attacks. Does Otataral prevent ascension? It can be lethal to gods, or at least super painful, but there is still a difference between ascension and godhood.
Karsa has also a immunity against magic through the Otataral in his blood-oil. But I'm not sure if we can call him an ascendant. He was badass from the start.
