Why are the MPs so scared of this referendum. I get the sense they dont really believe it but are very scared of going against democracy and the will of the people. I just dont see the electorate rioting and calling for Mays head if they called a second referendum or just said it wasnt binding. Maybe I just dont understand.

All 27 EU members have to agree to an extension, even IF Mps vote for it.

If not, doesn't that mean we leave on 29th March regardless of the vote yesterday?

What a colossal fuck up. Surely they can all see that its more important not to economically ruin the country than submitting to the 'will' of less than half the population? There's just no common sense here. Every update, every new vote, every trip to Brussels, every session in Parliament - the sheer cost in time and money spent on this nonsense must be phenomenal.

Yes, hence the EU's comment that it is like the Titanic voting for the iceberg to move. If there is no deal by the end of March, the UK still crashes out regardless unless the EU agrees to an extension or article 50 is revoked by the UK, in effect stopping Brexit.

I think they need a purpose for the extension right? At the moment it just seems like it's "give us more time so Theresa May can fail at getting her terrible deal through for the third time" which is presumably not enough reason to extend.

I believe they won't formally request an extension until May has had her flawed deal defeated for a third (!) time (the woman is a true masochist), after which they will probably say they need time to review and put forward an amended proposal that takes into consideration the concerns of the House. Which the EU will probably agree to because they are trying not be made the scapegoat for a crash-out. And then we crash out in June instead, because Parliament will not want to extend past the EU council elections.

May is hoping her third attempt at the deal will fly because Brexiters will be nervous that it's her deal or no Brexit now that no deal is allegedly off the table. That's why her repetitive phrases are now touting only that because she knows the ERG and DUP changing their minds is the last angle she has. I wouldn't bet against her getting it through, she could have the numbers if you think how many Remain MPs are saying they are committed to delivering Brexit. This third vote has the best chance of the three.

I wouldn't be so sure. Every member state needs to agree after all. And I don't understand how the EU could possibly look like the bad guy for giving further extensions. The presentation is probably quite different in England, but here in Norway and in Spain for that matter, the opinion seems pretty one sided in support of the EU.

And you better believe that those papers, as well as a certain group of politicians (specifically the ERG) will have no qualms painting the EU as the bad guy. I think the more important point here is the real ties that Britain has with Europe (and with specific European countries). In my opinion, the fact that each EU state has to agree actually pressures the EU to accept an extension. When you've got numerous countries with disproportionately strong links to the UK - that will be disproportionately harmed by the UK crashing out - then it makes it pretty damn awkward to vote against an extension. It's not just a question of voting against the UK getting an extension, but potentially of voting against other European countries saying "we need a deal" or simply "our industry would like more time to prepare". I don't think you need anything remotely like all 27 states taking that view to make it happen. A lone maverick is not going to push the UK out. In fact, I'd be surprised if a reasonable majority would even do it.
