I met Jacob Rees-Mogg once. He came to my previous work place. I had earlier read about him on wikipedia and learned what he said about people with northern accents. I have a northern accent so I just gave him the evil eye and tried to think of something witty to say while he toured our labs. I failed and he didn't even notice the evil eye.

I kinda like him but also hate him. I mean he's like a cartoon Englishman from 100 years ago. I don't want to eradicate his kind but they should not have power. They should be zoo exhibits or something.

His dad literally wrote a book on how to make money out of economic crises. He is pushing Britain off a cliff and will become (even more) stinking rich off of it. I have no part of me that likes any part of him. He is a vile and despicable man hiding under a veneer of eccentricity.

Genuinely, one of the cabinet ministers said this morning on national radio (Radio 5) that "80% of the British public support this deal." Then, when questioned on where he had that statistic from, he actually said "I'm producing a number to try to illustrate what I believe" and then after continued questioning completely climbed down and said "I totally apologise for that and I take it back".

I mean, honestly, where are the sandbags?

In other words "I made this shit up out of thin air and I am sorry I got called out for it"
Do they even live in the same reality?

What to me was truly astounding about this was that they were actually called on it for once rather than the interviewer just letting the statement go without questioning.

Jacob Rees-Mogg has six children and admits to never having changed a single nappy because that's not a man's job.

That's your Moggfact of the day.

I know this. When I said I kinda liked him I did also say he belongs in a zoo so don't anyone be thinking I sympathise with his politics. But to expand on my fondness for him - he always says what he means. He's not one of those politicians who says one thing and then does another or who prevaricates about what he thinks or how he's going to vote. I don't know why others can't speak in a similar way because I think politics would be on a better footing in this country if they did.

Oh, he is definitely genuine. He seems a very principled guy who holds firm to what he believes in. Which is rare in politics these days. Just a shame that what he believes in is a return to victorian times where he and his upper-class chums can preside over and take advantage of the misery and servitude of the repressed masses around him.

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

This is a very fun tool to try to get through Theresa May's deal through Parliament. What is entertaining is that you can of course submit any question you like and change the numbers accordingly.

By my count, a new referendum would win a vote by 332 to 307.

Of course, the Brexit Ultras, Wavering Brexiters, Brexit Delivery Group, Norway for Now, Veteran Labour Brexiters and the DUP would vote against it, but everyone else would vote for it. You could even get the Tricky Labour Leave Constituencies to abstain and it would still pass. I also suspect that the Norway for Now crowd (who are really the "Remain but we have to be seen to respect the vote" crew) might either abstain or even vote for a second referendum.

May's current deal will be shot down 441 votes to 198 without a huge change in numbers. I can't see how she gets remotely close to passing the deal in the House of Commons. No Deal has even less support: it would be shot down 500 to 139.

I believe in the cyclic nature of history. The founding principle of the EU was to avoid another war on the scale of World War 1 and 2. Human memory sadly is rather short and there are now enough generations who have not been directly exposed to war and extreme adversity to see a return to isolationist and nationalist sentiments. In the USA as well as in the EU. There are several other countries (e.g. France, the Netherlands) where a similar referendum would have given a similar outcome. The richer and more well off people become (relatively speaking), the less willing they are to share. And the more keen they are to pull up barriers. The past becomes a romanticised beacon of glory times (Empire) and the clock starts ticking down.

Yes, no, but. First, in the whole of Europe, babyboomers and their inherent conservatism still hold sway - despite being further removed from those wars, the 'young vote' was overwhelmingly Remain.
Secondly, the whole issue is that in any country at this point a vote on Europe is going to be reduced by Leave to a vote on migration/ integration, as that is where discontent unites the most people AND it is an issue that avoids the finer points of what the EU stands for and does.

That being said, I think the fact that Britain has a first-past-the-post voting system for its national representation as well as more or less a two-party system for its government allows for this kind of referendum to come to being, and then for Leave to be exploited by mainstream party MPs who see riding the Exit vote as a fast track to nr. 10. In the Netherlands for example most parties would be campaigning as a party for Remain (and I fully expect they might f*** up that campaign as much as Remain did through Project Fear, as true as it may turn out to be), Leavers within a Remain party would simply be expected to stick to the party line, and in case they want to speak out against, leave the party or have their membership revoked.

I know this isn't the British politics thread, but I thought I'd post this here:

Parliamentary sovereignty fuck yeah!!!

I love the internal workings of the UK/AUS parliaments. I wish Canadian MPs had as much backbone or at least half the independence of the UK ones.

You should look at the Canadian ones. The Canadian backbenchers never do anything, so as soon as a party gets a majority (e.g. Trudeau, Ford) the party leader has a de facto dictatorship for 4 years. This means that the entire legislative/policy agenda is set by the PMO and the Parliament just rubber stamps everything the PM wants.

In the British Parliament, the backbenchers have a fair amount of power in committees. In Canada something like the 1921 Committee is just unheard of.

And isn't keeping that 1921 Committee happy the reason Cameron agreed to a Brexit referendum in the first place?

At the end of the day, there were people who wanted the UK to leave the EU.

You may disagree with those people, you may dislike them, you may hate their guts, but those people voted enough representatives into power to push their views forward. The UK votes based on FPTP, but other than that, it has a reasonable election system. If Cameron ran on a Brexit referendum, got voted into power, and Brexit won in the referendum ... that's democratic, if still very stupid.

The same thing with the AUS Parliament, it seems to be full of racists and morons, but those are the racists and morons that were voted in. And at the end of the day, I believe it's better for the people's representatives to have the power to represent their constituents.

In Canada, I know calling my MP is completely pointless; he is Trudeau's patsy and he cannot do anything. In the UK, your MP can do something if they agree with your point of view.

On its face, the British system of government seems to me to be more democratic than the Canadian system. I like democracy, therefore, I like the British system more.

That is, again, a very rosy view of the Australian parliamentary system. Backbenchers very rarely vote outside party lines, and their "independence" has lead to something like 6 leaders in the last 4 terms of parliament, constant leadership spills, and what it actually results in is the fringe pulling the majority elected to the right. Those racists and morons? They're in the minority, and the only reason they have the power they do is because of the threat of a leadership spill and the fact that the incumbent party cannot rule without aligning six different distinct parties together.

Instead of the PM having a de-facto dictatorship, you have fringe extremists having a de-facto dictatorship. At least with your PM, the party that was voted in is actually the one whose views get advanced. In Australia, it's whichever nutcase 1-member party managed to get their tiny electorate to vote them in, giving them a balance of power they do not deserve.

The currently elected Liberal National Party is actually a coalition of about six different parties. And in order to maintain their grip on power, they have to continually appease the far-right elements of their party and their allies. Effectively, no individual part of their coalition has the numbers to rule alone. This would be like 1% of the population of Canada holding the balance of power because their electorate seat holds as much power as any other, and the current government *needs* that one seat desperately.

I'd rather my local MP be hamstrung by party politics than that. It looks all nice and rosy until you realise the likes of Pauline Hanson, Tony Abbott, and that other idiot whose name I forget wield more power than they have earned through votes.

Like I said, grass is always greener on the other side - I certainly don't think the Canadian setup is the best, but the UK and AUS parliaments are categorically NOT more democratic. They just like to pretend they are.

But the exact same thing is going on in Canada too, except that here you don't see the individuals responsible for the BS as who they are.

I will use a provincial example. In BC, there is a municipality called Surrey that has a number of provincial swing ridings. In the last election, both sides knew that the few thousand swing votes in Surrey could literally decide the election. So, instead of making sane policy choices, the New Democrats decided to run on removing tolls from a billion dollar bridge (effectively adding 3-4 billion to the provincial debt) while the Liberals ran on not allowing ride sharing apps to operate in BC (because there is a significant number of cab drivers living in Surrey).

In the AUS system, the individual MPs in these swing ridings would run on those insane policies, get elected, and hold the government hostage. In the CAN system, the entire political party aligns itself with the riding. But at the end of the day, it's a few voters in specific areas who hold the balance of power and make the outcomes less than ideal.

In my opinion, the solution isn't to hamstring people's representatives. Instead, we have to work towards more representative systems of government that don't give specific voters a disproportionate amount of power. At the same time, we should preserve individual MP's ability to work for their constituents. (proportional representation FTW!)

I think that generally, the Canadian system of government is marginally better than the system in the UK and AUS. But that's because of the fact that Canada has an actual written Constitution and a Charter of Rights and Freedoms, with the Parliament being bound by these documents. The Charter specifically provides a good degree of protection against bad politics (but not absolute protection, see Ford and the current Quebec government).

But looking specifically at the Parliaments of the three countries, I would much rather Canada had the UK system. If the outcome is going to be decided by a small number of votes, I would rather it be obvious which votes are deciding that outcome.
