If you want a more optimistic note, I think Labour are pretty likely to hold on to the cities, and the Brexit Party will fade away with, well, Brexit, while five years of the Tories being awful, added to the fact that we’ll have left the EU, could see large sections of the former Labour heartlands returning to Labour.

We’ll have to wait five years though.

The Tories didnt win, Labour lost. The party simply ran a disastrous campaign with a garbled message. People are fed up and want to get the while Beexit stuff over and done with. The Tories had a very easy ride, just rehashing one clear message plus giving some promises about more police and nurses. Corbyn failed spectacularly.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

Even in Broken NI the message was a bit more positive in the fuck the Status Quo (not the band) with majoritys halved and some seats over turned.

It feels to me that this quote is pretty representative of the reason why many shifted from Labour to Conservative, whether one agrees with it or not. It’s from a market stall holder in West Bromwich West, which flipped to the Tories and had a 68% Leave vote in the referendum:

People also couldn’t vote for someone like Corbyn because his policies were like a fairy story and people have got so fed up with Brexit and they just want it done.

Maybe when it's (Brexit) done people will see how much it's fucking us and we can get a real change in the next election.

Not holding my breath, but Corbyn has to go, Labour needs some with a bit of charm, for all his many many faults Blair had some charisma, he would have wiped the floor with bojo

What's the schizz in NI, Mac? Brexit being the main driver towards the centre due to a desire to Remain in the EU? I feel bad for you guys. Brexit is going to be shit in England but in NI it's a catastrophe. Nobody on this side of the Irish Sea gives a fuck about ye. Sorry.

This result really could herald the break up of the UK. After all the centuries of bloodshed and it goes because the English are a bunch of c*nts. Pretty fitting really.

This might be controversial, but I'm going to say it.

Thanks, ME, for being a bit more enlightened than a lot of people right now.

I'm disappointed with the result, I think it's terrible for the country and I hope as has been said above once Brexit is out of the way that people will look with clearer eyes at what they've voted for another five years of.

But, having just had a sharp conversation with an old friend because she called everyone who voted Tory a string of names, and then didn't really know what to do when I pointed out my parents, whom she likes, voted that way, I'm finding the "everyone who votes differently to me is scum" attitude just a little hard to bear, so it was nice to come here and not see it. If we all put ourselves in boxes and refuse to try and understand why people vote the way they do, then this will go on ad infinitum. It's exactly the mistake Labour have made in not attempting to understand why the people in their traditional heartlands were turning away from them.

As has been said above, it was Corbyn's election to lose and he did so.

Since about 2010 I have only ever known a small number of people who voted for whatever the outcome was of any national vote. I don't quite understand how I've got myself into this bubble or where the majority is. I think I might be a liberal elite but not really know it.

The only exception being the last European Election where the results reflected the country that I think I'm living in. It really must be the electoral system in that case, right?

Trying not to think of what this result means for the climate crisis. We need Nico back so he can train us all to be preppers.

I've had people who voted Torie message me gloating, saying that 'my lot' took a hell of a beating, etc.
The kicker is one of the guys who is vehemently Torie, his girlfriend has a lot of medical issues and relies on the NHS privatisation will put them in the poor house.


So fuck the tories, fuck their lies that convinced good people to Vote for them.
And fuck Corbyn for being such a soft tear and not moping the floor with bojo

I can't help feeling, rightly or wrongly, that a lot that's happened in the past five years or so could've been avoided if Labour had elected David Milliband as their leader rather than his brother. Everything seems to have gone down the toilet since then.

I had a brief chat with my mum this morning. She's 81. She voted remain in the referendum, as did I, but voted Tory yesterday. I pointed that out to her, for the umpteenth time. She went very quiet.

The very fact that David Miliband immediately quit politics and effectively left the country tells you all you need to know about what kind of leader he would have been.

Nah, Labour DID ignore their heartlands, but that stretches back to the Blair years. The referendum gave them an opportunity to speak out without necessarily switching to voting Conservative, but when Labour then didn’t fully back the result that left them with what happened yesterday. What is interesting is that some of the policies in the Labour manifesto were directly about addressing the needs of these communities, but it was buried by the noise of a potential second referendum and the suspicion surrounding Corbyn personally. Obviously, the ideological battle within the party further hampered them, especially contrasted with how viciously effective Johnson’s government was in kicking out malcontents.

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

He was trying to shift the party back to its socialist roots and thought there was a majority in the country that wanted that too. It got mired in Brexit, media bias towards the Conservatives and pretty poor leadership skills. My view is that he is a thoroughly decent man completely unsuited to leadership and who ran out of ideas after his first year at the helm. Party Politics in this country is poisoning everything. We need a revolution but we won't get one until people are on their knees. They think they are now but they have no idea how bad it could get.
